My grandparents lived close to a golf course (not a ritzy one, but still nice, with lots of big fancy rules about non-members staying the fuck out). There was a large ditch and lots of trees between the younguns and that course. And wouldn't you know it, we had a bridge we would cross every day on the weekends and bring our bikes to ride up and down the golf path. And we'd search in that big old ditch for lost golf balls!
Yep, 4 preteens, well, three and a pseudo-teen (I was 14), up and down that golf course all day long. Sure, we'd avoid the players. We even had one guy scream at us for daring to trespass. But did we ever fear we'd deserve to be thrown into the ditch for our ball-collecting? Hell, no. If any man on that course picked my brother up and threw him, he'd have lost that golf club and I'd have carried it and my banged up brother back to my mom. His punishment would be swift, and my mother would not be merciful. No one deserves to be attacked for playing when they're kids. Even if the kid refused to give him his ball back (we usually avoided the freshly landed ones), he didn't deserve to be tossed.

Now damn, I'm torn.. because I hate preteens. Really, it's my least favorite age. I noticed how awful preteens were around the time that I was one. BUT.. when I was one, I was a kid who collected golf balls from the course that was my back-freakin-yard. Yeah, trespassing, sure. It's not as if they drive cars, so I assume they live on the course or are members of a club. There are always lost balls, in the woods, the brush, the water. We'd fish them out, resell them to the golfers cheap. We did it then to make a few dollars, kids did it before us, kids do it today. The only guy we ever had complain was an old dude trying to do the same thing, but when it comes to wading into water features, you're just not going to compete with the 11yr olds. In reality, we had great relationships with the regular golfers, being their go-to source for cheap balls. They'd look for us. I imagine they recognized a few of their balls coming back around to them, but getting back a brand new looking titleist pro v1 right there on the course for no more than 50cents must have seemed like a fine enough deal. I get the anger over messing up a ball in play, if not the physical rage. What I don't get is the angry hatred right HERE for kids who collect golf balls to sell back to golfers. It's a non-deliquent way to earn a few dollars for some willingness to wade through brambles and skanky water. I didn't do delinquent things on the golf course til I was an actual teen and it was the middle of the night. Come on Harley, don't be the get-off-my-lawn guy, lol.

I take it you don’t play golf...

Nope, I don't play golf. I don't play croquet, either. Boring yuppie sports are for, well... boring yuppies. ;)

If there are any questions about the standard skate park set up or the types of individuals who frequent them, however, hit me up. :P

Jesus Christ, Jury. All you've got is to say my post is "blather?" Really? Wow. This is almost as impressive as when you said I "talk too much." At no time, however, have you attempted to refute any of the points I have made.

Gee, I can't imagine why.

Jesus God Almighty. I can’t believe I’m even having to argue about this. The guy is a fucking douchebag who needs to get a fucking life. No, not a golf pro, just a guy playing golf who takes it WAY, WAY, WAY too fucking seriously.

To think that golf courses should have roving bands of security is ridiculous. To think it is ever ok for a grown man to physically attack a 12-year-old is even more ridiculous. If he was defending himself, that is one thing, but if he let a smart-mouthed kid get to him so bad that he assaulted the kid, well I have no sympathy for the guy. there were many options Nathan had at his disposal, the one he chose was wrong and illegal.

Nothing really needs adding to what Morbid said, but I should like to mention that in a pro tournament with big money there would have too many people around for this accidental picking up of a golf ball that was still in play to occur. (And even then, I sincerely hope the pros would be able to contain themselves if some novice spectator did touch a ball.)

I think this was a club tournament and that the money was a private bet. Doesn't mean that it wouldn't have hurt Mr Moore to lose the hole; but he shouldn't be making wagers he couldn't afford.

Someone asked about alcohol earlier. I would find that very relevant as well; but I suspect nobody checked. He wasn't driving, after all.

First of all, Jury, save the indignation that I would dare criticize your spelling. If you don’t want people commenting on your spelling mistakes, don’t call other people “stupid” for no reason other than you just don’t like what they’re saying. That was the point and you know it.

You are way off base with your assumptions; that you would assume so much about me as to be commenting on my overall worldview is just ridiculous. I absolutely DO NOT view all children as angels who can do no wrong, not even close. Yet you feel comfortable claiming that I see ALL kids as angels, going so far as to put it in all caps to emphasize your point which is ironically followed by you chastising me for forming opinions without “all the facts” even though I don’t actually, you know, hold those opinions. It appears your relationship with “the facts” is tenuous at best.

What you’re not getting is that this story is NOT about the bratty preteens acting up on the golfcourse, it’s about the fact that psycho Nathan Moore attacked a kid for it. Thinking Nathan Moore is wrong does not preclude one from thinking what the kid did was wrong…though I must say, Jury, I laughed out loud when I saw you comparing stealing golf balls (if you can even call it stealing) to a kid who shoots and robs people.

I think you nailed it, Morbid. That we are even debating whether Moore was justified in attacking the kid, with some even concentrating on how badly he beat the kid as if Moore should be given a medal for not putting him in a coma, just seems crazy to me.

Don’t even try with Veronica. She is always right, and best of all she can spell better than the rest of us.

It is not a cut and dry case. Only one side is told; however, to Veronica, all she can see is a kid getting messed up, and that’s all she will ever see.

I guess she missed the show called “when kids attack.” To her, children never shoot adults, they never assualt adults, they never rob adults..etc. To her, all she can see are little Angels, ALL OF THEM, no matter what the facts are.

Oh, I know. And his behavior is inexcusable. However, from what I understand, there was a tournament going on, and usually there is some kind of security on the golf courses during those things. I was wondering why someone hadn't noticed these kids were collecting golf balls on the course while the tournament was being held.

Not saying that the guy was in the right at all. There is no excuse for a grown man to attack a child. Regardless of what the kid was doing or why he was there, he didn't do anything to necessitate the kind of violence that was visited upon him.

Just wondering here... My ex-boyfriend's father used to play in golf tournaments all the time, and they used to get wasted in the course of playing. Any word on if alcohol was involved here? (Not that it makes his actions acceptable, but I was just wondering.)

Also, WTF is up with the golf course security. If they were having a tournament, there should have been no way for these kids to be going and picking up golf balls during it.

Now, when you instead respond like a crazy, YOU are at fault for shifting the focus off this boy’s bad behavior. YOU are the one responsible for turning this boy from a hoodlum into a victim. Congrats to this douchebag for being as counter-productive as possible.

I take it you don't play golf, ball are everywhere in the rough balls are lost all the time , boys are always out looking for them, there was really nothing wrong with this boys behavior, except he picked up a ball in play instead of a lost ball, like I said before the ball was probably in the rough and the boy had no idea it was in play.
the child is the victim no question about it, and Moore is an out of control abuser

I didn’t see the physical description of either here. Have you assumed a size difference here or are you in poses ion of facts to support this?

Where has anyone either in comment or the original story even suggested that anyone was assaulted with golf clubs? I must have missed that.

maybe you just need to read sloooower, it might improve your comprehension
sounds like 3 of you on here like to beat on 9 to 12 year old children or younger, guess you're here because you enjoy rooting for the abuser & enjoy reading about children being beaten, what pitiful lives you must have

Harley_Tech:

Don't even try with Veronica. She is always right, and best of all she can spell better than the rest of us.

It is not a cut and dry case. Only one side is told; however, to Veronica, all she can see is a kid getting messed up, and that's all she will ever see.

I guess she missed the show called "when kids attack." To her, children never shoot adults, they never assualt adults, they never rob adults..etc. To her, all she can see are little Angels, ALL OF THEM, no matter what the facts are.

I am sure Nathan was just having a bad day, why else would he fly off the handle for the little darling.
