Redwood City, CA–Brendyn Crispell, who goes by the name Bubba on his Myspace profile, is a 20-year-old junior instructor at a San Carlos martial arts school. Through that school, Crispell became acquainted with a 9-year-old girl…4 years later, he claims the two are dating.
Monday evening, authorities were called out on a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in a residential area…the car had blankets taped to the windows. Sitting inside the car was Crispell and a 13-year-old girl. It took a bit of prodding, but Crispell eventually admitted to officers that he had just performed oral sex on the child. You see, the two had been ‘dating’ for the last four months, and in celebration of their four month anniversary, the two decided to engage in oral sex. Crispell told officers that he knew it was illegal to have sex with the kid, but oral was ok, right? Wrong.
Brendyn Crispell was arrested on charges of performing lewd acts with a child under 14 and oral copulation with a person under 18, and was booked into Redwood City Jail. Bail was set at $200,000.
The car, which belonged to Crispell’s mother, was searched and investigators found a container of Vaseline and a couple of stuffed animals. Happy Anniversary! Police also obtained a search warrant for Crispell’s home on Tuesday and seized a computer and other items for analysis.

C) Have a hearing to determine bail
D) Throw him in jail with Bubba to be loosened some more.

I’m not justifying it at all mama, just saying that’s normally how the parents respond. “She knew him for years, he was her instructor, we trusted him when he all of a sudden wanted to take her out for pizza at 10 at night. The blankets on the car window looked like a new trend” or whatever.

I don’t think it’s gross at all. When i was 13, i remember a lot of girls who had 18,19, and 20 year olds as boyfriends and would do stuff like this. I remember “slam” books and how we would try to figure out who’s hand writing was who’s to see who had already had done the nasties…I guess it’s just me though, but I feel like some kids are growing up a lot faster and faster these days.

Yeah, I agree with you on that part. I see why, but I don’t see why he would need to go to jail for an extended period of time when it was mutual. I don’t see it as having control over her cause any of her 13 year old friends could do the same with her and have nothing happen to them. but i guess it’s just me.
Nope. I was sheltered too. Middle school hit me like a ton of bricks. I had no idea what sex was, I knew what kissing was, but I did not know that what I pee from, was thought of as sexual.

Ok, I can see some truth in what you say because I see it with the kids I mentor, but I can only agree if they had MET when she was 13. The emotional and psychological difference betweeen a 9yo and a 16yo is HUGE. I cannot agree with a 16yo dating a 9yo under ANY circumstance (were they dating at that age or just aquainted? maybe I missed something).
At 20, I would NEVER have had a 13yo girlfriend. Not just because it was illegal, but because I wanted a GF who was at least as mature as me (physically, emotionally, psychologically.)

you can’t. That’s just it. I see that they were being affectionate. It wasn’t reported as a rape, I know that she is only 13 and can’t give consent, but I don’t see why he would need to go to jail for something for 15 years when she did consent. The law is the law is the law, but stating that he needs to be killed for something that sounds mutual, is a wrong thing to say.

I never said no limits. I said you can’t, and I should’ve elaborated on that sentence by saying you can’t make a specific limit because everyone ages differently. There is a difference between an immature 13 year old and an immature 20 year old. There is a difference between a 10 year old and a grown 40 year old man.

IDK…, I guess there is just something in my mind that finds this morally and legally reprehensible. More morally, because we all know the legal age limits are a blanket statement. For instance, and I know I may get grilled for this, my daughter was a better driver at 14 than most 25yo, and yes, I would let her drive around town and in traffic. Her mother has medical problems that necessitated her knowing how to get mums to the ER safely. She was not of legal age, but she was and is good at it and I would rather her know than be dangerous.

A few weeks before I turned 13, I met a 21 year old man who, over a period of a couple of months, repeatedly molested me after telling me I was his “girlfriend” and that he was in love with me.
At the time, I had a feeling deep down that it was wrong. He told me that we couldn’t tell anyone, because they wouldn’t understand. He was always telling me I looked so much older and was so much more mature than other 13 year old girls. He gave me alcohol, he snuck me out of my house, he gave me gifts. I was attention-starved and naive, and I bought it hook, line, and sinker.
My mom eventually found out about him, and what did he do? He left town–disappeared without a trace and without saying another word to me. I was devastated and felt so betrayed. He was supposed to be my boyfriend, and supposed to be in love with me!
As an adult, I’m able to clearly see and understand what happened. I used to feel like what happened was my fault, and harbor a lot of guilt. Now I realize that he was a predator and I was, unfortunately, an easy target.
An 8 or 9 year age difference may not be much during adulthood, but when one person involved is still essentially a child, it is huge. What could a 21 year old man and a 13 year old girl possibly have in common? Nothing that I can think of. I guess he could help her with her homework…
Statutory rape laws exist because children can’t give consent. Even if they are complicit in the sexual activity, they are too emotionally immature to be capable of making a logical, sound decision. Of course, it’s debatable whether children are all equally mature or immature at the same age. However, we can say that the majority of 13 year old girls are unable to make a sound judgment about whom to sleep with. But certainly a 20 or 21 year old man should be mature enough to know that it’s wrong to sleep with a child.
I know from my own experience that I made the decision to let this man do what he did because I was so eager for affection and attention. He made me feel special. That’s what people like him DO; that’s how they get their victims. I found out a few years after this happened to me that there had been other girls that he molested. Not at all surprising…and extremely disgusting.
Penelopejo, Mammasweets–if this happened to your daughter, would you feel differently? I’m not asking that to be snarky, either, I’m honestly curious.

OK, I have to give everyone a scenario to comment on. This really happened and I still find myself revolted at the thought of it all. A girl who has just turned 14 meets a guy who is the waiter at the family dinners they attend weekly. He is 28 almost 29. He secretly begins to call her at night and even attends overnight family camping trips just to be near her. Being 14 and the middle daughter she is flattered at the attention. Fearing her parents won’t approve she begins seeing him on the sly and yes, having sex with him. Astonishingly enough when the parents discover it they allow it to continue, even blessing a marriage between the two by driving them to Kansas to allow him to marry her since their legal age to marry is 14. His viewpoint is that it wasn’t molestation, rape, or ANYTHING

Physical rape …… maybe not… she gave her consent. But a law is a law. She was a minor and he wasnt…. how can you condone it? They werent in love! And has it ever crossed your mind “What the hell did a 29 year old want with a 14 year old?” Doesnt that raise a red flag to you? Would you let your 14 year old go our with a 29 year old?
I dont care man… consent or not… these men know what they are doing when they engage in sexual activity with minors. To me this whole scenario is morally reprehensible and her parents are whacked to even allow it. He, on the other hand, is in my opinon nothing but a pedophile that was given a legal pathway to do it by going to Kansas and marrying her. At 14 there was no way I was ready for a sexual relationship and certainly not marriage! And, I am not that old so that wasn’t too long ago for me. They can say these kids these days grow up faster or whatever they want, but does that give them the right to be treated as adults and get involved in sexual relations with a man twice her age? Think about it people. Its disgusting! The man in this article was only 7 years older than her and didn’t even have sex with her. No, I am certainly NOT condoning what he did at all. I guess what I am asking is why he was charged and jailed when a man much older than him did more explicit things to a girl not much older than the girl in this article. And, no, I don’t know and have never heard of these people in this article before. The scenario I am writing about concerns someone I met not long ago and he shared the story with me. Of course, I got a romanticized version out of him considering she had divorced him and he was broken hearted. It was all I could do not to vomit on him and I didnt’ even stick around to listen to the rest of it because I was quite ill just hearing what I had heard already, so when I saw this article it made me question why he was allowed to get away with molestation, child rape, and sodomy just because he married her. What 14 year old girl is capable of saying what she wants to do with the rest of her life? Obviously this one didn’t because as soon as she grew up she left him. Why is the legal age to marry so low in some states? And, why was he allowed to marry her considering the age difference?

I do have a daughter only a few months old and when I even think of a 28 year old man wanting to even talk to her if she was 14 I see a blind rage well up. I would want to kill him, and there is no way in hell I would actually condone such a thing! I guess what troubles me most is how he actually doesn’t see what he did as pedophilic behavior! It is!!! All he said when I told him that was “we were married” Well, buddy, married or not it is still pedophilia and I know for a fact they had sex BEFORE they were married! Disgusting! Howdy that is terrible and I am really sorry that happened to you! I agree with Penelope and Mamasweets though, I understand but I don’t. I was 14 and my first BF was 23. I wasn’t ready for sex and he never pushed me. I think this guy looks about 16 even though he is 20. I don’t know how to say what I am trying to say….sigh…..but I feel that some 12 or 13 YO DO know what they are doing, then there are others who are really victims, as is the sitch in your case.
