Shenell Phillips Is No Friend

Denver, Co – I’ve never met Shenell Phillips. She may be a real sweet gal who has a great personality and an amazing ability to pull sunshine out of her ass whenever the days get dreary. She may be considered really good friend material to some, even good enough to allow her to watch their children, but to me…Hell no! On February 28, 2009 police and emergency crews responded to a three-car accident along East 56th Avenue near Tower Road. The reports say around 2:55 a.m. 28-year-old Shenell Phillips was driving drunk and under the influence in the wrong lane on eastbound 56th Avenue when she ran head-on into two other cars.
Antonia Gutierrez, 59, and Juanita Dominguez, 59, who were in the car that Phillips hit, were injured. They are in fair condition at Denver Health Medical Center. A Chevrolet Classic also was hit. The woman inside that car wasn’t hurt.

In the car with Phillips was 17-month-old Ahnesty Brook. Shenell Phillips was her God Mother. Sadly, the child died as a result of her injuries. The child’s mother, Ashaka Hicks, is eight months pregnant and already has two boys. She is devastated over the loss of her daughter.

“Why didn’t my friend bring my baby home instead of taking her with her while she was out drinking and doing drugs,” said Ms. Hicks. “I only live up the street from her she didn’t have to take her out at three in the morning.”

I really feel for this woman, but I cannot help to wonder why Shenell had her daughter to begin with. They had to of been very close, Shenell was the child’s God Mother, so I’m assuming this mother must of had some prior knowledge of Shenell’s drinking problem and drug habit. I’m not trying to condemn the woman, but if she did know about the drinking and the drugs, why did she leave her daughter in this woman’s care?

Shenell Phillips is charged with child abuse resulting in death, two counts of vehicular homicide, four counts of vehicular assault and two counts of DUI. Phillips has an extensive record that includes assault, disorderly conduct, failure to appear, forgery, theft over $15,000, menacing with a deadly weapon, burglary and wrongs to minors. She remains in custody in the Denver County Jail; her bail has been set at $250,000.

Yes, indeed why, is the question….well, maybe because she’s a druggie, drunk, good for nothing loser? I have to agree with your questioning FlamingFox, this mother must have had an idea about her drug and alcohol use, how could she not.? I think this is one mistake she can never undue, so sad and unfortunate for mother and especially the baby who lost her life. Be done with her, throw her away and lose the key.

During the day she’s responsible for up to five children under the age of six. She does it superbly and amazingly keeps the house SPOTLESS in the process. My 22 month old son is one of those five babies sometimes.

Why would I trust my baby to a crackhead alcoholic? Because this is nothing new to her. Twenty years ago when she was just an alcoholic, she was responsible for 3 little girls under the age of 3. I was one of them.

I totally agree the mother has to share some blame her. How is this different than a mother who entrusts her baby to her penis with a history of drinking, drugs, and a slew of other crimes.? My parents were both RAVING alcoholics, and they managed just fine with me. When I lived in the hood, there was a man upstairs who was a functioning crack addict… and a fantastic single father of three. His kids were just as well cared for as any other children – perhaps even better because he thought he had to make up for the monkey on his back.

Sure, sticking my kid with an addict of any sort wouldn’t be my first choice, but when you’re poor, you lack options. I would have been far more concerned about this woman’s prior criminal record.

OMSJ!! Personally, I would never leave my child with a known alcoholic and/or drug user. It doesn’t matter if they never had an accident. I would be so worried and most importantly, I would NOT want to expose my child to that kind of setting. I think to grow up around that type of setting gives the child acceptance/approval of it. Children learn from their caregivers.

Early in my childhood, my dad was the functional alcoholic, yes, he was a great Dad but maybe, just maybe I am blocking out the times when he wasn’t there and missing out on being a Dad. Mind you, he was not taking care of the kids.

BTW-my dad quit drinking when I was still a young girl, so maybe the good outweighs the bad in my situation.

I am really not understanding this reasoning. Thankfully I didnt grow up in this sort of situation, however, I would imagine based on the stories of friends and other family members that I would not subject my child to that sort of living just because “I survived it.” Isnt it natural for a parent to want more for their children???

I’m sure I don’t know the whole story, but to me one dead person = ONE count of vehicular manslaughter. One is ENOUGH! Charging her with the same thing twice doesn’t make what she did more horrifying.

I just think when someone kills a child by driving drunk, the charges don’t NEED inflating. One count is PLENTY bad. I’m definitely NOT saying anyone should go “light” on her.

I’d think that when she hit the first car head-on it would have been a hint that maybe she was driving the wrong direction for that lane. I wonder how many miles she would have persisted in redefining the road direction if her car hadn’t conked out on her.

Some people need to step away from the podium. There’s no soapbox comments needed here. As a responsible parent I make the best choice I can provide for my child until I can do better. So in a crunch, if my normal daycare is unavailable, my aunt with 20 plus years experience caring full time for children, is the best choice. She’s a loving helping hand when I need her regardles of her problems. And I came out just fine.

Let’s be real shall we? The unsung druggie of them all is the pain killer addicted soccer mom who slipped a disc three years ago and has had a prescription ever since. She drives her kid to school, the doctor, and soccer practice all the while indulging in a three pill a day habit. Would you guys judge that addict’s husband the way you’re judging Ms. Hicks?

Ok yeah, if your not financially prepared to care for children, you shouldn’t have them. But millions do, so once they’re here you have raise them to the best of your ability. I guarantee 80% of the parents on this site struggle. And all 80% probably try their best.

Not sure I’m buying this. From the story, the mother made the comment :

Which leads me to believe the mother was at home while all of this transpired. Maybe some can overlook a drug habit or alcoholism, but her criminal record should speak for itself. If this woman was my child’s godmother, we would be close enough that I would know about a criminal record. There is no excusing this woman or the child’s mother, period.

I don’t care if this person has been fully functioning alcoholic for 20 years. Alcohol and drugs alter your state of mind and you just taking the chance of leaving your child with this person is completely reckless. Addictions means that there is there number one thing and one of these days, your child is going to be the thing in the way of getting what she wants. You don’t have money for proper daycare? The state will pay a large portion of your daycare costs, get your child out of this environment.

Report me for what? For being a poor single mom who gives her son the best care she can until his dad graduates in april and can contribute to the family income? Sorry sweetheart, but my son is in the best of care and hasn’t had any injury/sickness in his life unless it was self inflicted (little boys love to jump off things). And that was in MY care. He is fed well, clothed well, and is surrounded by people who love him.

The state is a two faced bastard. I’ve tried to get day care assistance. But I was told that I don’t qualify because I do have a job. They don’t care if I only have two dollars left out of a check after paying a day care bill. That’s better than nothing right? I’ve been paying taxes to help support this state for the past 10 years and they wouldn’t throw me a life jacket if I were drowning. So don’t come telling me about the motherfucking state.

My son’s aunt (on his dad side) is a lead child protection worker in the county that I reside. She knows all the intimate details of my life as she provides a lot of support in the absence of her brother. Do you think she’d allow me to put her youngest nephew in danger and not do anything?

You guys have a selective reading problem. Because I could have sworn I wrote that my aunt has kept her demons locked down until night time or the weekend. And has managed to do so for 20 YEARS without incident.

But forget all that. What I want to know is how do you know your daycare provider is not a crackhead alcoholic? Hmm? Last time I checked, a piss test isn’t required to get a daycare liscense. You don’t know. I have a problem trusting people I don’t know. So this is the better option for me. Despite what you may think not all addicts walk around in a fog all day looking for a fix. My aunt is only one of several people I know who has an addiction that spans decades and have lived an active functioning life.

I just wanted to express how I can relate to Ms. Hicks. There must have been some reason she allowed her baby to be with this person. Neglect usually doesn’t show up in just one area and just one occurence. And if Ms. Hicks did neglect her children don’t you think the media would have been all over it by now? YOu don’t think there would be other charges?

I believe this woman loved her children. I see this case as one woman betraying her friend in the worst way. Ms. Hicks trusted her with her most valuable possession and she didn’t take care of that precious baby the way she should have.

I read DD everyday. I’m not naive. I know there is ugly out there. I just rather stay an optimist whenever I can. So sue me.

I couldnt agree more. Before you make someone the god parent of your children you should know everything and I mean EVERYTHING there is to know about that person first. Down to where their freckles and birthmarks are located. Leaving your child with someone you really dont know is immature and irresponsible. Now in the case that drinking and driving was uncharacteristic of of Phillips, then I do feel for “mom… but given that Im really not buying it…. I think that “mom” was at fault as well.

Now just a reminder…. im pregnant. My husband and I have gone round and round about even assigning “god parents” for the sheer fact of “Who do we know well enough and trust enough to raise our kids in the event that we are unable to do so ourselves?” And we are struggling to answer that question. I honestly, after reading the shit that Ive read on DD, dont know if I trust anyone enough to leave my kids alone with them. Its kind of un-nerving to feel like you cant trust anyone, but the baby I am carrying is my life and my responsiblilty and I have the parental obligation, as does my husband, to ensure the safety of our children. Idk… If Ive said it once Ive said it a million times… there are some people who just should NEVER be allowed to have children or to even be around kids.

One last thought……If I was “mom” and the bitch drove drunk and killed my kid…. She would succumb to the beating I would instill on her… And I think any other GOOD MOMS out there would agree with me. You dont fuck with our kids. A pissed mama is a very very bad thing!

I have a 15 yr old goddaughter and especially when she was small I had her alot. Her mom has 5 other children and she needed a break. This child’s mother is pregnant and has 2 other children, I could see her letting her daughter go w/ her godmother for some free time. This is tragic and sad. Shenell is never going to be forgiven after this, I’m sure. And driving drunk is just so completely selfish, unnecessary, and reckless. I hope they throw the book at her.

I beg to differ on the statement that none of these people have a heart. I have been reading dreamindemon for several months now and if you read any other story besides this one, you will see it as well. You are too close to this because you are related to the criminal. Everyone here has the greatest sympathy for the INNOCENT VICTIM, not the one who killed her. It is the same in all the stories.
