Kristen Kelley Drank Cousin’s Acid
February 19, 2009 by Morbid
UPDATE – 42-year-old Thurman Wayne Tubbs surrendered at the police station between on Thursday evening. He is being held at the Calhoun County Jail.
Weaver, Alabama - On Friday of last week, 11-year-old Kristen Michelle Kelley was outside jumping on a trampoline with her friend, when she saw a Sprite bottle sitting on the corner of a nearby retaining wall. After taking a drink, she ran inside her home choking exclaiming that she thought she had drank kerosene. The bottle did not contain Sprite, or kerosene…but rather hydrochloric acid. The bottle and its contents belonged to her cousin, Thurman Wayne Tubbs, who lived in a camper nearby, the contents being one of the ingredients he used to make meth.
Kristen was taken to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. Family members said she suffered severe injuries to her throat and stomach. Her injuries are so severe that as of Wednesday, it was not known if she will survive. She can move her feet and hands and nod her head. If she does survive, chances are she will probably require an IV or feeding tube for the rest of her life.
On Tuesday, after learning that a meth lab may have been involved with the incident, a search warrant was executed and officers found six meth labs in the camper. Thurman Wayne Tubbs, who had fled the scene before police arrived, had been allowed to move his camper on to their property by the girl’s parents, Phil and Denise Kelley. No drugs were found in the parent’s home and no charges will be filed against them. If Kristen survives her injuries, Thurman Wayne Tubbs will be charged with first-degree assault. If she does not, more serious charges will be filed. So far his name has not been released to the press and he is still at large. But be sure we will have his name in this article as soon as it is known, and a picture to replace the girl whose life he has needlessly altered, or possibly ended.
Thanks for the forum article Dakota, and to anonymous for some other details.

Okay, paranoid mom, I am (and I wear the banner proudly). Why are you going to let someone move onto your property and not go in the…home…tent…camper…trailer, whatever the hell he lived in and AT LEAST make sure that if your kids wander in there that there is nothing that will harm them.
Come on, folks! He could have had anything in there.
Sorry, but when I hear these stories my mind automatically goes into the “what could have been done to prevent this shit mode”.
I may as well get further educated and exercise the brain while I feed my DD addiction, right?
4:09 pm on February 19th, 2009
why was the acid just sittin’ outside?
4:20 pm on February 19th, 2009
Poor girl, she probably thought, “Oh (insert family member here) left out their soda, I’ll just have a drink, seeing as I’m all sweaty from jumping around.” Now her life has been forever altered
What an idiot asshole of a cousin!
Also, I heard that cooking meth produces a pretty noxious odor. Wasn’t anyone suspicious of what Cousin was up to?
4:22 pm on February 19th, 2009
I fucking hate meth heads. Selfish and stupid!!!
I feel for this girl, I hope she survives and beats the odds somehow.
4:24 pm on February 19th, 2009
hydrochloric acid is a seriously corrosive chemical, not something that should just be left around the trailer. it needs to be stored in a glass decanter with proper hazmat labelling. until meth labs start following these minimum safety standards, tragedies such as this will continue to happen. when they catch this fucker, i hope they throw the book at him for ruining this girl’s life.
4:37 pm on February 19th, 2009
Ditto!
Unfortunatly they never seem to overdose.
4:37 pm on February 19th, 2009
OMG, this is so tragic. Poor baby, praying that you recover soon. I hate addicts
4:42 pm on February 19th, 2009
So the guy hurts one of his family and takes off, not even knowing if she is ok. What a POS.
4:49 pm on February 19th, 2009
I seriously doubt safety is anywhere on a meth cooks list of things to think about. If it was, they wouldn’t be doing meth in the first place.
4:57 pm on February 19th, 2009
Christ almighty. How tragic. I hope they catch this worthless fucker real soon.
Meth is as evil as drugs get, no doubt.
5:09 pm on February 19th, 2009
I am sorry, but how do you get 6 Meth Labs into a camper? Wouldn’t that be 1 Meth Lab with 6 batches cooking?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrochloric_acid
One of the most important applications of hydrochloric acid is in the pickling of steel, to remove rust or iron oxide scale from iron or steel before subsequent processing, such as extrusion, rolling, galvanizing, and other techniques.
Concentrated hydrochloric acid (fuming hydrochloric acid) forms acidic mists. Both the mist and the solution have a corrosive effect on human tissue, with the potential to damage respiratory organs, eyes, skin, and intestines.
WOW! If it will “pickle” steel, just think what was done to this poor child’s insides!! I have used this (it’s also called muriatic acid) in plumbing work…
I am surprised she didn’t smell it before putting it to her mouth, though, it has a very strong odor…. She may have had a cold or something and couldn’t, I guess!
Poor Baby, We will be praying for complete healing for you!

Definitely will!

Wonder if the meth maker knows Shirley?

I”m wondering if the parents had any idea meth cooking was going on? They may have let it slide and think it wasn’t an issue of concern…yeah, a lot of dimwits think like this.
That poor child wouldn’t have had a clue, not one thing ,would have alerted her that she was about to drink acid. Fuckn’ pieceoshit, bastard meth heads. For their own selfish, moronic, loser behavior, goes a childs life forever changed or gone.
Heal completely sweet Kristen.

Seems to be rampant with parents. Huge discussion this morning about parental obligations and the need for them to be proactive in certain situations.
6:11 pm on February 19th, 2009
Lavonna, you cracked me up with the Shirley comment. Hey who knows, perhaps they’ve smoked it together.
6:51 pm on February 19th, 2009
Probably, but I am guessing Alabama laws allow them to describe it the way they did in the articles.
7:05 pm on February 19th, 2009
My thoughts exactly…how sad.
And I (for a change) do NOT blame the parents. People allow family members to stay w/ them or store things at their property all the time. Hell, I even have a few things in my parent’s garage, I’m sure. Nothing hazardous or deadly, but still. I can see them allowing this and not knowing. It’s fucked up he’s on the run and not standing up for his mistake. I wish her a speedy recovery
7:07 pm on February 19th, 2009
I don’t blame the parents either.
I could not help it, when I read the meth lab part I thought of her :-d
8:36 pm on February 19th, 2009
What a piece of shit-Run bastard Run
We will too
9:26 pm on February 19th, 2009
oh, i HATE it when meth labs don’t use proper hazmat labeling! wtf?? why would you even *think* those people care?
9:34 pm on February 19th, 2009
I see what you’re saying, I really do, but one thing that makes me wonder about the parents is the fact that this poor girl saw some random bottle of Sprite sitting on a wall outside and her reaction was, let’s drink some. I say this because my parents were extremely adamant when I was growing up NEVER to drink from a bottle or can that isn’t mine if I didn’t see where it came from. In a million years I never would have drank from that bottle when I was this girl’s age, even if I thought it might belong to a family member. I wouldn’t have done it even when I was six. Neither would any of my friends. If one of us dumbass kids DID drink from a strange bottle, it would have been because another kid dared us knowing it was a really, really bad idea.
It doesn’t surprise me that some worthless white trash piece of shit waste of human DNA left his meth-making hydrochloric acid-in-a-soda-bottle sitting around outside. It DOES surprise me, however, that this girl didn’t know any better than to drink from it.
Please, everyone, take note that in no way, shape or form am I blaming the little girl. Did anyone else’s parents tell them not to drink from strange bottles when they were little? This part just bothers me.
Anyway, I hope they catch the skanky piece of shit cousin and I hope it’s his third strike!
9:38 pm on February 19th, 2009
Ok well I’ll probably get griped at for saying this but…don’t most parents teach their kids NOT to drink after other people and NOT to just pick up random drinks and start drinking out of them? Maybe I’m overly safety conscious but I’ve always taught my kids to never pick up random items …no matter how their labeled…and drink out of them.
There’s always some dumbass in the world that uses a coke bottle to store gasoline in….
9:41 pm on February 19th, 2009
I understand what you mean… When I was a kid I would’ve taken a drink from my mom or brother’s soda if it were on the counter. If there was a water bottle outside in the backyard, I probably would’ve had a drink too. If I was at home, I probably would not have considered any beverage “strange” — I was at home and home is supposed to be safe. However, I would have never taken a drink from a bottle at the park or school. There was probably a false sense of security because she was at her own house…
9:53 pm on February 19th, 2009
I know my sister and I have both taught our kids not to drink out of other people’s glasses/bottles/cans/etc for all of the obvious reasons…keep the kids from catching an illness, they don’t need any sugary soda, there might be more than just soda in the glass…you get the picture. However, my kids and nephews/nieces have been known to sneak a little sip out of someone’s drink when they thought nobody was looking! It’s what kids do! After both of us having kids for over 16 years, we have learned to keep one hand or eye on our beverage AT ALL TIMES! Even if it’s just water!
Now with that said: about this dumbfuck cousin…I hope he rots in hell! What a loser! Not only is he a selfish ungrateful shit for having a meth lab in his family’s property, (what if the trailer had blown up?), but he leaves a Sprite bottle out where little kids can get to it! And then, to add insult to injury, he RUNS AWAY! The friggin’ tard can’t even face up to what he has done to this girl. What a douchebag!!!
9:58 pm on February 19th, 2009
That makes sense. My dad was a cop so he was flat-out giving it to me straight like, “there might be poison in there!!!!” Scared the crap out of me! Maybe that’s why I never even wanted to drink from other people’s bottles or cups, it wasn’t an issue of me wanting to sneak it when the parents weren’t looking…
10:08 pm on February 19th, 2009
Oh holy fuck! That poor girl. I would be one less cousin in a heartbeat.
11:00 pm on February 19th, 2009
Aww that poor girl! I find it hard to believe the parents were unaware of the cousins 6 meth labs! This was an avoidable incident, way to ruin an innocent little girls life dumb fuckers!
11:03 pm on February 19th, 2009
Well, maybe I’ll get griped at more, but doesn’t this child look entirely like she has FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome,) in this picture? Am I insane, because to me it looks glaring. Her impulsive drinking makes more sense in that context to me, anyway.
11:44 pm on February 19th, 2009
Damn, I can only imagine the pain that girl went through after drinking that acid; I thought an ulcer was bad.
11:44 pm on February 19th, 2009
Everyone’s kids can be little heathens when playing out in the yard when nobodys watching. I mean this little girl was at home, not at the park or the play ground and as Tassa said before, home is suppose to be safe. As a former kid that wore hefty size pants, trampolines make big kids THIRSTY! Not like kinda thirsty but “running to the water hose and maybe yacking from drinking to fast” thirsty.
Damn, I looked up FAS and I am inclined to agree, or at least I don’t think it is out of line to consider the posibility that could be the case. Poor kid, I hope a concerned citizen or maybe a sane family member catches him before the cops do. I know what I’d do to any adult member of my family that did this to child. Time to break out the cheese grater.
11:53 pm on February 19th, 2009
i didn’t want to be the first to say it,but i had this same thought. her facial features definitely look like those kids with FAS. there were a couple in my old neighbourhood, and now when i see it i can usually tell.
12:23 am on February 20th, 2009
How the hell come the damn acid didnt burn through the sprite bottle??? And spill out onto the ground?? So it can burn flesh, but not plastic….hmmmmm that dont make sense, and Fuck that piece of shit Methhead I hope he ODs on his next fix, and does the world a favor, Hopefully the girl pulls through!!!
12:38 am on February 20th, 2009
Thats a valid question Justin, maybe i can help. Plastic is much tougher than the soft tissue of our throats, esophagus, and stomach. Eventually the acid would have broke the plastic down, but it takes longer in part because the pores of the platic are much smaller than the above mentioned anatomy. The smaller these micrcoscopic pits (or pores on the tissue) the less surface area in contact with the acid.

Kristen baby doll, my prayers are with you
To Kristen’s parents my prayers are with you as well please get her better, and for the cousins meth labs going on/////
I CAN ONLY HOPE THEY DO LOCK HIM UP REGARDLESS IF KRISTEN LIVES OR NOT AND THROW THE DAMN KEY AWAY
SUCH A SAD SAD SAD STORY
GOD BLESS YOU ALL
8:42 am on February 20th, 2009
It doesn’t corrode plastic, either.
I work at a pool store and deal with hundreds of thousands of gallons of that stuff weekly. They’re all stored in plastic containers.
BUT… this acid has like, THE WORST fumes EVER
it’s crazy this girl didn’t notice.
just opening a bottle arm’s length away and breathing in gave me a sore throat for a week
and the fumes are like orange.
very sad.
9:17 am on February 20th, 2009
OMG the poor little girl.
I pray that she will live and maybe just somehow be ok.
I hope they catch this guy and throw him in jail and throw away the key

Personally, I think the biggest mistake that a lot of people make is trying to do their duty to the community (or extended family) before considering the well-being of their immediate family.
With every decision I make, I ask myself what the consequences may be for my son. If it’s so much as a distraction from his responsibilities at home and at school, I normally decline. It it alters our schedule so that it is a challenge for him to stay on task, thus his days are less rewarding and more frustrating, I decline. If it gives someone who’s character I am not entirely sure of access to my child – I definitely decline.
I did not commit to the world at large, I committed to my child when I brought him into the world. I’m a sucker for a hard luck story and I will reach out to someone in need – only to the degree that it will in no way alter the harmony at home.
Nice of these folks to help a cousin out. Wonder if they’ll do it again?
4:02 pm on February 20th, 2009
SumrLilli, I agree with you 100%. That was so very well said!
7:55 pm on February 20th, 2009
I feel bad for this girl. But I really do have to wonder why she would just find a soda bottle and drink out of it. It doesn’t make any sense to me. Even as a little kid, that would have been beyond gross to me.
8:36 pm on February 20th, 2009
Castille I thought the same thing…
8:45 pm on February 20th, 2009
Thanks to new forum member, brie star, for the pic and update.
1:10 am on February 21st, 2009
I heard that is what happened. The friend dared her. They probably both thought it was a bad idea, but it’s hard to refuse a dare when you’re a kid. They probably both thought it was just an old Sprite and it would be gross to drink, but not actually harmful.
Poor little thing. I pray she recovers.
1:15 am on February 21st, 2009
Yes, mine did too.
I really have no clue about FAS, but if the face diagram I found on google is anything to go by, Kirsten doesn’t appear to have what they label “flat midface” or “small eye openings”. I think she’s just squinty because she’s smiling so hard. And I have NO idea what “epicanthal folds” are, but I can’t spot them in this picture.
Hoping for a full recovery for Kirsten.
11:19 am on February 21st, 2009
has anyone heard how the girl is doing?
5:06 pm on February 21st, 2009
You don’t need all the features to have FAS. Some are more hallmark than others though, like the thin upper lip, and smoothness between the nose and upper lip. This girl also has a short nose, and her eyes *are* very small for the rest of her face even if squinty. It’s the squinty that makes it harder to tell if she has any epicanthal fold, which is skin folding at the outer corner of the eye, and I suspect her face looks broader and flatter without the smile. Her ears area also set low. Obviously lay people can’t diagnose anyone, and even professionals couldn’t from a picture, but she most certainly has features that would lead one to wonder. Behavior would of course be a larger indicator of whether she actually has it, I think, but her reported behavior lends itself to the same suspicion

I typed outer, but I meant inner… I hate when I do that :/

I think she looks like a lot of fun in that picture.
