Memphis, TN–There isn’t a lot of information on this case, but what is being reported is enough to make a person sick. Little Jaslyn Hayes is 3-years-old. Like many children her age, she may not have grasped the whole concept of potty-training-she’s just a little thing, accidents happen. As a mother, I have changed countless sheets in the middle of the night…it’s not a big deal. To mommy’s boyfriend Antonio Manzi it is. That little accident pissed him off so bad, he kicked Jaslyn in the stomach. Twice.
Jaslyn didn’t just wet the bed, she also *gasp* spilled her orange juice. And for that she was kicked in the stomach by a grown man. What’s more, her mother, Brandi Carrington, the one person she should be able to count on to love and protect her, failed to seek medical treatment for Jaslyn for almost a week. This wasn’t the first time Jaslyn was abused at the hands of Antonio, he admitted to striking her several times with a leather belt.
When Jaslyn was admitted to the hospital, it was determined that she was suffering from internal bleeding and trauma. She was bruised. She has already undergone two surgeries and because of the internal damage she suffered from the beating, it was necessary to remove part of her GI tract. Just a week ago, Jaslyn was in a coma. It is now being reported that doctors have removed her catheter and she is up and responsive. The extent of the damage to her little body is still unknown…she faces a long road to recovery. Her father, Jonathon Hayes, is watching over her at the hospital. She is now in his custody. Get better quick baby girl!
Antonio Manzi, 22, waived his right to an attorney and freely admitted to abusing the child on at least two occasions. He told investigators that he was alone with the child during the incidents of abuse. He is being held on a $150,000 bond at the Weakley County Detention Center, facing charges of aggravated child abuse.
Brandi Carrington, 23, admitted to seeing the bruises on the child and failing to notifiy anyone of the abuse for five days. She was arrested and later released on $1,000 bond. She was charged with failure to report child abuse-brutality, neglect.

HTe problem is mothers almost ALWAYS get custody, no matter what. Even if the dad was the better parent. My option is man or woman, someone who automaticallys go outs and shucks up with someone new should be looked at by Social Services.
I hope they both get beaten to a pulp. For the mother, I hope someone hits her and “forgets” to report it for five days. Then she’ll know the suffering her baby went through.

What hurts me the most as a mother, is knowing that these children are being hurt by people that should be protecting them. It makes the child feel alone, even at this young age. Trust me, I know first hand. Grandma knew that she was being hurt, or at the very least was told by the little girl. When a 3 year old is telling you that someone is hurting them, shut the fuck up for Christ sake and listen!!! Do something.
When you turn your back on a helpless child, you are no better than the one doing the abuse. This is my opinion and I stand 100% by it. Turn your back on an abused child, is just as bad as striking, raping, or even killing the child.

These charges don’t seem severe enough.
I truly hope that dad is able to terminate her parental rights, or, at the very least, win full custody and deny visitation. I also hope that, in the most humane way possible, little Jaslyn is made to realize that her mother is responsible for her injuries and wasn’t sorry at all.

I think I’d like the state to provide some sort of child welfare responsibility training to all new parents–and any lurking asshole boyfriends/girlfriends. It wouldn’t eliminate EVERY horrific case, but it would surely have an ameliorating effect. Poor little Jaslyn.
