Parma, OH–Parents, let’s say you have a 12-year-old son. Much like other boys that age, he loves to play video games. You get him a subscription to XBox Live. Over the span of a year, he meets and develops some sort of friendship with a fellow gamer. One day, the friendly gamer shows up, unannounced, at your local Greyhound station, asking if he can hang at your place for awhile.
That is exactly what 19-year-old Codey Hawks did. After a year of playing games with the child, and on occasion the child’s father, Hawks packed his bags and moved from Burton, MI to Parma, OH. On January 15, Hawks called the child’s parents from the bus station. He told them that he had joined the National Guard and was going to ship out in February. Could he stay with them until then? Their answer? Yes. They let the traveling pedophile move into their home.
It took them almost 2 weeks to get suspicious. The confronted their son and their suspicions were confirmed. Hawks had been sexually assaulting their child. Um….fucking DUH! The police were called, Hawks was arrested and hauled off to Cuyahoga County Jail. He is now facing multiple charges of rape and gross sexual imposition.
I was checking out some commenting going back and forth between Hawks and one of his Myspace friends. It looks as though he had been planning the move since December. From December 31: ‘finishing talkin on myspace then going to sleep getting drunk tomorrow then movin down to ohio in 20 days for college and other things.’ Again, the same day: ‘im gonna go to ohio state and im parting at a friends house and theres more then the college reason why im movin down to ohio lol.’ When his friend wrote back, ‘what other reasons besides college? He replied, ‘cant tell u that one lol.’ Well, now we know. SickSick reviews

My mom once out of the blue called me to ask me to accept a “relative” to stay at my home for a week. Now allow me to tell you about my mom. She went from Penis to Penis and each and every time she did, my 2 sisters, and I would be assualted. I wouldn’t leave my own mother with my children.
Oh yeah, pedophiles act very nice and are very child oriented. But of course, that is how they get your guard down.

A lot of people sort of saw this kind of thing coming, and unfortunate that it did. I do feel a bit bad for Codey in the means that he was tormented by others for quite some time; the tormenting helped shape who he is. And then again he could’ve certainly avoided this, as could have the parents. The parents of this 12-year old child should have at least got background info on Codey before deciding to let him stick around, but he duped them all. Codey was a decent kid a majority of the time, but I can understand some of why he might have done this.

If you’ve got some insight into the mind of a pedophile, we’d love to hear it. My hypothesis? He did it because he’s attracted to children. The attraction to children, an inherent sexual deviance, is largely caused by a genetic predisposition to that type of behavior. He intentionally used his interest in video games to obtain access to the child.

Ah, 12. It’s a difficult age. Call it 13 and a consensual relationship with a 19 year old, and then I’d defend their right to make poor decisions. Eleven, and I’d definately be behind law enforcement being harsh. But 12… and he looks younger rather than older. But he certainly comes across as older over the computer. I believe that in some cases, pedophiles are very emotionally immature. They’ve attempted to have relationships with other adults, only to result in epic fail. In fact, they fail so miserably in other areas in their personal life, they exert their control by preying on children who are so malleable and unaware. Whether this immaturity is caused by a wire being crossed or by society shunning them at an early age, or both – I’m sure there are a myriad of reasons.
I, by no means, am apologizing or supporting pedophiles and their sick behavior. As a mother of four, the very thought of any of my children ( or anyone else’s) being violated and abused sickens me.
As for this boy’s parents – Shame on them. Its a parent’s first priority to protect their children. My role as a mother is to try and foresee all possibilities and direct my children away from the harm and towards to good. My children will one day grow up and my goal is to ensure that they are happy, productive, moral members of society. I hope these parents realize the error in their ways and take the initiative to help him through this.

Going with the assumption that you’re hypothesizing on a consensual scenario, I have to disagree.
At 13, one is still very much a child, emotionally speaking, and certainly not experienced or worldly enough to be able to make any type of informed or consensual decision with regards to engaging in a sexual relationship with any individual over the age of 18 years.
Now, if the younger individual’s age is raised to 16, then yes, I too would have an issue with someone as young as 19 receiving a life sentence and being listed as a sexual offender for what would otherwise (IMO) be a serious legal infraction.

Is there some sort of consent form with xbox live pertaining to the age of its users? I have a 12 yr old and I would never allow him access to chat/IM forums. His computer usage is very minimal and always monitored. We do have a Wii, but its wi-fi games have preset chat phrases, so my children can’t divulge personal information to strangers ( or at least the games we have don’t allow this – I don’t know about the more adult games.)
I think unmonitored internet access and children is like handing them a loaded gun and then acting surprised when the gun goes off.
