Timothy Sturgel Heard Voices; Murdered Family
January 26, 2009 by Morbid
COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - On Saturday morning, 911 received a call from 13-year-old Emily Hurst. She was calling to report that her stepbrother, 26-year-old Timothy Sturgel, had just shot her stepfather.”He’s coming. My mom!,” she screamed before the line went dead. When police arrived at the home, they witnessed Timothy Sturgel outside with an assault rifle. Timothy then turned and went back in the house, and allegedly started a fire inside. He then came back out, unarmed, and was taken into custody.
Once inside the home, police found Timothy’s adoptive father, Jerry Sturgel, 51; his step-mother Mary Sturgel, 40, and his 13-year-old stepsister, Emily Hurst all dead from gunshot wounds. Detectives said the bodies were riddled with bullets. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said that Timothy has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He has not made a formal statement, nor has he given a motive for the attack, but Jerry Sturgel’s cousin, Cindy Smith, told The Cincinnati Enquirer that Timothy was one of Jerry’s three adopted children and that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Timothy Sturgel heard voices that told him to do bad things, Cindy Smith said. She also stated that Jerry was tired of Timothy’s crap and was going to kick him out of the house. Police records show that deputies have been called to the house before for psychiatric emergencies. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Timothy had been ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment at least four times.
Here is the 911 phone call provided by the Cincinnati Enquirer: “My stepdad got shot – my stepbrother shot my stepdad,” a trembling teenage voice tells the 911 dispatcher.
“OK, I’m going to get you some help out there; what’s the address?” the dispatcher asks. “9753 Sacramento Street,” the girl says, gaining composure.
As the dispatcher verifies the address, another female voice is heard in the background.
“What’s your name?” the dispatcher asks the girl.
“Emily Hurst.” Garbled voices continue. EmilyEmily reviewsgasps for air.
The dispatcher regains the teen’s attention, asking questions about the person shot.
“Who shot him?” The dispatcher doesn’t get an answer. Just this: “He’s coming.”
Emily screams. “My mom!”
Someone fumbles with buttons on the phone, and the line goes dead.
This story leads to all kinds of different discussions, in particular, exactly how crazy does a relative have to be before you kick him the hell out? Especially when he is around a 13-year-old. Some types of crazy is a given. Like if you come home to your kid dancing around the yard in his mother’s underwear wearing your neighbor’s face like a mask. No question there…fucker’s gotta go. Now. But when it is bi-polar type stuff…mental conditions that can usually be controlled by medication…
But then again, this family could have been scared shitless of the guy…hesitant on kicking him out for fear of some type of outburst like this one. I also wonder if money comes in to play in a situation like this. The family was BROKE. Jerry had just been laid off and the family had filed for bankruptcy. Had they the financial means, I wonder if there would have been a different outcome for the family had they had more options…or would it have even mattered. I’m curious if Timothy had prescriptions for his mental dis-order, if they could afford them, or if he was even taking them if he could.
Here is some veejo, yo!

So sad…I hope for peace for the surviving family members.
I hope for justice for Timothy…

The transcription of the 911 call is heartbreaking. I can’t imagine the fear that child was experiencing in the last few minutes of her short life.

I flip-flop when it comes to this kind of crime. I feel Timothy needs to pay for what he did, but he was obviously a mental case. His past history alone shows this guy had some real psychological issues for some time. When I say flip-flop, it is not in regards to whether or not Timothy should pay for what he has done…but rather WHERE he should pay for it.
Had this been a burglary gone wrong, then I have no issues hanging the guy in front of the court house immediately after being found guilty. But when it comes to mental illness like bi-polar or schizophrenia…I dunno, just never been comfortable with just outright killing them or throwing them into the general population of a prison.
It seems their lives would be better served by letting doctors and psychologists use them as guinea pigs. Stick new drugs in them and such. Maybe even cut the top of his head off, and then cut the top of a monkey’s head off….then connect wires to each of their brains…then when a scientist flips a switch, Timothy would smile and in turn, the monkey would frown. Then when they are done with that, they could poor Aussie shampoo on to Timothy’s brain, to make sure the level of sodium lauryl sulfate is enough to keep your hair manageable, but not enough to give you a tumor.
I need coffee…

Just looking at him gives me the creeps. There’s definitely something not right in those eyes and his expression… *woolies*.
A friend of mine has a brother with bi-polar. He flipped out on her one day in her own house and in front of both their kids. Not the first time for him to do something like that, but it was the first time he ever attacked her, and over nothing. He just laughed one min. and the next she was on the floor with his hands around her throat. He beat her up really bad. People like this are the scariest to me, because you have no clue as to what is going to set them off.

FUCK this guy, kill him now.

There is no indication as to whether or not he was ‘off his meds’ at the time of the murders? If he was regularly taking his meds and flipped out anyway, then maybe he’s just an asshole with anger management issues.
Guess it didn’t work, huh?

When a court orders the treatment, does the patient have to pay?
It sounds like they were really struggling with finances, so I’m sure paying for medication and treatment was very difficult, if not impossible.
RIP Hurst/Sturgel family
I think it’s even more horrific when someone adopts a child, sincerely trying to help, and ends up dying at the hands of that child. So sad.

Sort of like living your life for the Lord, only to find your 82-year-old ass getting split open by a rapist who is simultaneously choking you to death with your deceased husband’s tie…all the while you are staring at the pictures of your grandchildren sitting on the dresser across the room.

You have anybody in particular in mind, Morbid? Sounds kind of personal, but I know your husband would never wear a tie……

Jesus…. God, where the hell did that come from? Morbid, your name suits you perfectly! Geeesh
Also, I am on the same side of thinking when it comes to a true ‘mental’ impairment, such as bi-polar or schiz….. unfortunately, a lot of people are trying to use some of these disorders as a defense when they really have no ‘documentation’…. In this case, I am guessing there is proper documentation that he is mentally unstable…obviously is a danger to others and himself!
You get your coffee morbid, I am going for a beer!

Hell yeah, Its a dirty job and some one got to do it, Stick his ass in front of the line.
To bad they stopped giving people Lobodomys, he could have used one. I used to know the woman who officially got the last one. It would have cured Tim of all his problums and all he would have needed was a few new bibs to catch the occasional drooling.

As the wife of a bipolar individual, I can say for certain that if Timothy wasn’t on his medication because the family couldn’t afford it, this is absolutely nothing new in a broken system. I spend on average $700 a month on my husband’s medication and therapy. This is even though we have health insurance, though it covers literally about $20 total. How we pay for it? His parents, my parents, and myself. THREE families have to pitch in to help a loved one and prevent any kind of unnecessary tragedy. It shouldn’t be necessary that it takes three families to get enough money to take care of someone desperately in need, but until the country tires of hearing about these preventable cases where medication was needed and wasn’t available, the health system isn’t going to change.
If he wasn’t on his medications because he refused to take them… well… that’s a different story and I sincerely hope that he spends the rest of his life away from society.

Lobotomy!!! That’s all I have to say! WOW to the MAX!
8:46 pm on January 26th, 2009
Wait, I have to ask…. Is that veins popping out on his forehead? Or what?
8:51 pm on January 26th, 2009
This leads me to believe that perhaps he was not compliant with treatment and/or meds. He definetely needs to be locked up.
8:57 pm on January 26th, 2009
Yea, but people with Bipolar have to have med adjustments every now and then and apparently he didn’t do that. He looks like as asshole and evil in his picture.
I can’t imagine how scared the 13 yr. old felt making that 911 call. May they RIP
12:29 am on January 27th, 2009
Oh, man. That 911 transcript…ugh. How fucking horrible.
7:51 am on January 27th, 2009
The expression on his face is one of justification. In my opinion (and I’ve seen this look many times as I have dealt with having a skitzo-effective bipolar friend) he thinks that he has done what he had to do and he’s proud of himself for accomplishing it.
It’s sick and it really freaks me out…but this dude needs some serious help. The innocent always have to suffer for others wicked ways.
It’s fucked man.

That’s usually how it goes.
