From Coffee To Decapitation

Haiyang Zhu and Xin Yang

Blacksburg, VA–Xin Yang, 22, hadn’t been in the United States very long…the graduate student from Bejing arrived at the Virginia Tech Campus on January 8. Xin Yang just completed her second day of class and was having coffee with a friend on campus at the Au Bon Pain cafe on Wednesday evening, when her life was brutally cut short.

The friend, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu, a doctoral student in agricultural and applied economics, had been helping Yang adjust to life at the college. Though the two did not know each other well, school records listed Zhu as one of her emergency contacts.

While having coffee, Zhu attacked Yang with a large kitchen knife. He decapitated her right there in the cafe. She never saw it coming. There were at least seven witnesses to the attack…all of them stated that there had been no arguing between the two before the attack, no shouting, nothing.

Officers arrived about a minute after receiving the first 911 call.  Dispatch says they received two 911 calls about a woman being assaulted. The first officer on the scene said that when she arrived at the cafe she found Zhu holding Yang’s head in his hand.

The motive behind the attack is still unknown, but it was discovered that on January 7, Zhu wrote on a Chinese-language blog that he had been so frustrated over stock losses and other problems that he thought ‘only of killing someone or committing suicide’. If that was the case, you should’ve chose the latter, Zhu.

Zhu, also from China, had been a student at Virginia Tech since the beginning of the fall semester last year. There was no knowledge he suffered any mental problems…he had not been under review by the police department or the university’s threat assessment team. He has no previous record with the university or local police. Now he does. Haiyang Zhu has been charged with first-degree murder.

I doubt that anyone needs to be reminded, but in April 2007, Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old Virginia Tech student, shot and killed 32 fellow classmates and teachers before killing himself. VT has certainly had their share of horror and tragedy.

And we have an update to this horrible story.

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — A former Virginia Tech graduate student pleaded guilty Monday to decapitating a classmate, and prosecutors for the first time revealed the reason for the campus cafe killing, saying his romantic advances had been rejected.

    Links are here and here.

This is just sick…. and sad~ I don’t understand how someone could do this in a cafe so fast. I mean, not to be sick, but you’d think it would take some time to remove an actual head from someones body? How big was this knife??? It isn’t like just cutting a piece of steak in half…. wtf, did I just say that? Ahhh, I am speechless… this is a gross topic, I am moving on……….

I heard from witness accounts that he had to saw away at her neck for a good few minutes... this was not a fast process at all. If you've never seen someone be beheaded with a knife, just Google it.

Last week, investigators found “psychological brochures” at his apartment when they searched it, according to the document.

    Interesting. Combined with this:

[I]t was discovered that on January 7, Zhu wrote on a Chinese-language blog that he had been so frustrated over stock losses and other problems that he thought ‘only of killing someone or committing suicide’.

that has me wondering if, perhaps, Zhu thought he could get away with killing somebody if he sought out psychological help beforehand. It would be interesting to discover when he went to the clinic.

But I keep coming back to his keeping the stack of firewood in the living room and unplugging the thermostat, causing damage to his rented dwelling by doing so. And I have to wonder if he is malingering or if he did strip his gears at some point.

The topic of guns on campuses is a worthy one. Personally, I support guns on campus, given certain regulation.

MY opinion is, I think it's a good idea, I believe that if a "bad guy" (or girl) came in to shoot the place up, he'd have a gun legally or not. The only way he'd stop is either being shot OR killing himself (or herself). as far as a shoot out, and getting shot in the cross fire, I believe that your chances of getting shot by the "bad" guy far outweighs the chances of being shot in the cross fire.

    * This is my opinion, and in no way represents the view of the admins. of the D'D' =)

Who is going to check to make sure the hundreds, if not thousands of students carrying have a permit to do so? If it becomes legal for “law abiding” students to carry - that won’t keep the criminal ones from carrying as well.

The students are responsible for registering with the school. There should be records kept of all the students on campus that have legal concealed carry permits. This way in the case that a crime is committed, the school has a copy of this person's info. And if there is no info. then the student was either breaking the rules by carrying on the campus or they did not have a permit at all. There are ways to do this. Its a lengthly process but worth the fight.

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus urges the importance in the people carrying to be LAW OBIDING CITIZENS….. this means no criminal record, no intent, following the legal process, carrying a legal weapon, ect.

Who is going to check to make sure the hundreds, if not thousands of students carrying have a permit to do so? If it becomes legal for "law abiding" students to carry - that won't keep the criminal ones from carrying as well.

Now bare with me for a second….. Say you are a student at Virginia Tech. You are sitting in class and the door swings open and a mad man is swinging a gun at you and your fellow classmates. Now here are your two scenarios….
    1. The mad man kills you and everyone around you and goes to the next classroom to conuinie his rant…..
    2. The LAW OBIDING CITIZEN sitting next to you reaches into his holster kept in the side of his pants, draws his gun, fires a shot and kills the gunman before he has the chance to kill anyone…
Im asking you all now…. which situation would you prefer to be in???

Well, of course I'd want to be in the second scenario - providing the "law abiding" citizen doesn't freeze - or miss. Of course, if nearly ALL the students are packin' heat - well - can you say "Shootout at the OK corral"? Some innocent bystander is bound to catch a bullet.

There's no easy answer, here. Especially considering in THIS story, a gun wasn't even involved. No telling if some vigilante with a gun would have helped. He could have shot at Zhu, missed and hit Yang. Then what? "Oops"?

I don't have the answer, but I'm not convinced allowing students to carry is the way to go.

Ok...well Im going to go ahead and give my input here. I happen to know a little about this topic and feel very passionately that students SHOULD be allowed to carry guns on college campuses. Im a strong advocate for Students For Concealed Carry on Campus. Here are a few of my thoughts....take them with a grain of salt.

-Of all of the mass murders (shootings) on college campuses, next no none of the criminals obtained their guns legally.
-Next to none of these criminals had a permit to carry that gun concealed.
    - There is a process that concealed weapon permit holders must follow in order to obtain their permit. These people are skilled and aware of the capabilities of their weapon.
-They have also taken a safety course, undergnone a background check, and taken the time to follow though with the legal process. This shows that they have NOintent on doing committing illegal actions with their weapon...they now have a legal paper trail.
    - Prohibiting and I stress LAW OBIDING CITIZENS from carrying their LEGAL WEAPON WITH A LEGAL PERMIT is unconstitutional.
    - Who do we call when there is a problem, when there is a man shooting up a school? We call the police... well what do the police do? They draw their guns and come into the school..... huh..... interesting thought! Whats the response time of a police officer? Whats the response time of the person sitting next to you? Little quicker dont ya think??

Now bare with me for a second..... Say you are a student at Virginia Tech. You are sitting in class and the door swings open and a mad man is swinging a gun at you and your fellow classmates. Now here are your two scenarios....
    1. The mad man kills you and everyone around you and goes to the next classroom to conuinie his rant.....

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus urges the importance in the people carrying to be LAW OBIDING CITIZENS..... this means no criminal record, no intent, following the legal process, carrying a legal weapon, ect.

I do however think that guns should be left at home when out partying. Alcohol and guns are bad news..... but just a thought for everyone. Concealed carry is LEGAL. The man or woman standing in front of you at Starbucks could VERY possibly be carrying a deadly weapon. But it wont bother you if you dont know its there.

guns dont kill people....people kill people

    Tech suspect visited counseling center

The Virginia Tech graduate student accused of beheading another graduate student on campus last week had visited the school's counseling center, according to court documents filed this week.

It's unclear why or when Haiyang Zhu, 25, went to the Cook Counseling Center, but investigators obtained his patient records from the mental-health facility after receiving information that he had "received treatment or counseling" at the center, according to an affidavit for a search warrant filed in Montgomery County Circuit Court.

Last week, investigators found "psychological brochures" at his apartment when they searched it, according to the document.

Authorities allege Zhu, a Chinese student who arrived at Tech last fall, attacked fellow Chinese student Xin Yang, 22, with a kitchen knife in the Au Bon Pain café in the Graduate Life Center on Jan. 21. When a police officer arrived, she saw Zhu holding Yang's severed head in his hand, according to court records.

Zhu has been charged with first-degree murder.

School authorities said last week that Zhu had not come to the attention of campus police, Blacksburg police, or the university's Threat Assessment Team.

But Zhu's landlord said he had unsuccessfully tried to persuade a Blacksburg police officer to talk to Zhu about his belligerent behavior toward other tenants of the apartment complex where he lives.

Campus police investigators are now trying to determine a motive for the attack on Yang, as well as the exact nature of Zhu's relationship with Yang.

Yang arrived at Tech on Jan. 8, and Zhu had been assigned to help orient her to the campus and community. Zhu's landlord said the young man had tried to help Yang get an apartment in his complex, but she didn't fill out the necessary paperwork. Yang moved into the Graduate Life Center.

Last week, police searched her room and found a check made out to Zhu for $40, a diary and a letter with a red kiss on the seal. A search of Zhu's apartment turned up paperwork relating to a chef's knife, among other items.

Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech student who killed 27 students and five teachers at the school April 16, 2007, also visited the Cook Counseling Center. In December 2005, he had been ordered to go to the center for counseling, but after one visit he never went back.

I never claimed your response to Professor 'Mouse was directed at me. Funnily enough, she wasn't even responding to you in the first place, unless you registered two nics here.

Sounds like a little dose of hypocrisy.

Self-centered? Ummm, that would be "no".

Long-winded? I keep a roof over my head by writing clearly and cogently. The habit is hard to break.

In need of attention? Read comment 103. It's the third one down from the top of this page.

You know, biteme, just for shits and giggles I went back and read all of the posts on this thread and your characterization of what went down is a bit, shall we say, disingenuous. Before AlwaysinFlyoverCountry even responded to you about this gun issue, you called LeeMouse an IDIOT in all caps, just for stating her opinion. You didn’t like her opinion, so you resorted almost immediately to ad hominem, personal attacks, which seem to be your MO anytime something contentious comes up.

it wasn't how she would react I had issues with. it was speaking for everyone( if this were to happen, everyone would do this), I have real issues with people thinking their opinion is the only one. I'm sure I could've made my point without being antagonistic.

I didn't speak for you or anyone else just for myself, we all have a right to our opinion
I don't speak for anyone else and I don't appreciate someone stating how I or rest of the world population would react to a situation. I'm all for opinions, just don't take it for granted your opinion is my opinion (not talking about you Veronica) , and the rest of the world population can't possibly have a deferent opinion and we'd all react exactly as you would. We all have deferent up-bring, education, knowledge, abilities and experience etc, etc, etc.
Veronica, just trying to explain my issues with the other 2 posters, not against you or your post, at this point I'm feeling long winded & opinionated myself. You're right my responses tend to be antisocial at times, I'm working on it, not doing all that well obviously , but I am working on it. Your opinion & input was appreciated, I'll keep working on it.
Maybe I need to stop reading these horror stories for a while, I'm taking the anger out on the wrong people.

Well, it’s a logical progression, Rev. When I read this article over in our forums and we got the typical “why didn’t anyone do anything?!?” response, I mentioned that I was willing to bet the only thing quick enough to stop this guy would have been a bullet.

I have been thinking hard about this case, Athena, and I don't know if a firearm would have been much help this time.

One of the things my instructors stressed in the weapons classes I had both in the service and after I traded my BDUs for Business Casual dress is that the attacker has the advantage. When I did the Tueller drill I found out exactly what that means. I can certainly see Miss Yang relaxing, smiling and laughing, talking with Zhu, firmly ensconced in Condition White as she drank her coffee, then Zhu suddenly attacking.

I had a man cover 20 feet and paint a stripe on my shirt before I could raise my blue rubber gun and say, "Bang" when I did the Tueller drill. And I was ready for him. Miss Yang wasn't ready and Zhu was across a table (or so I assume) from her. I have lived much of my life at Condition Yellow and I don't think I could have withstood that attack.

Did you know that the Supreme Court ruled that the police do not have the responsibility to protect you? Funny, considering their slogan is “serve and protect”, but they are not legally responsible for your protection.

No they're not. Paxton Quigley covered that in chapter 4 of her book Armed and Female. I don't think much has changed in that regard over the past decade.

Juxtapose that with the fact that Americans defend themselves from criminals roughly 750,000 time a year, and it makes me wonder why we want to further limit the situations in which law-abiding citizens are allowed to carry guns.

I have heard everything from 65,000 (from the Clinton-era Justice Department) to 2,000,000 (from John Lott via the NRA). I'll certainly accept 750,000 as reasonable.

Sounds like a plan. But you will still find that they are not “no gun law” states as you asserted. The issuance of carry permits is described by a series of laws.

Sounds like a plan. But you will still find that they are not "no gun law" states as you asserted. The issuance of carry permits is described by a series of laws.

and from now on do your own homework.

On this issue I have been for almost 30 years.

I can pick up a simi auto and turn it into a full auto within 15min,

Then you should be working for one of the major gun makers. They need skilled machinists like you that can put those pins in the perfect spot and can cut and harden the lockworks. Rock River Arms, for instance, is so swamped with orders that they are no longer quoting estimated delivery dates.

I can pick up a banana clip for it,

    Wow.

    That's scary.

    [/sarcasm]

most anywhere, try going to a gun show. It’s obvious from what you write you’ve never been to one.

Not in the past 10 years or so. I haven't had the money to buy too many more toys.

You can go to a gun show in Nevada and walk away with a 50 caliber and metal piercing bullets, all you need is money.

Sure can. If I buy it from a dealer I will go through the same process as if I bought it at the dealer's store front. And if one is not a resident of Nevada one will have to buy it from a dealer to get it legally.

And it'll be bolt-action or semiautomatic to boot. Not fully automatic.

Are you aware that the BATFE is monitoring gun shows closely? Of course you are not; you haven't done your homework on this, have you? They have stopped gun buyers and asked for ID to prove they were residents of the state and they have made arrests.

How much is the next 20 years of your life worth? I damn sure know I couldn't get enough from the sale of any or even of all of my firearms to make up for having to spend the next 20 years in prison. Any firearm I transfer will be transferred strictly according to law.

You should see all the people hanging around those places and what they’re trying to sell.

I have seen them. A gun show was where I saw the M60 GPMG for $6k.

Your problem is your limited and your life experiences are limited,

You are making assumptions that have no basis in reality.

How many campaign medals do you have on your DD 214?

Do you have a DD 214?

My old passport was red. What color is yours?

Criminals don’t really care if the law says they shouldn’t own a gun, or if the law says they shouldn’t cross state lines or sell guns.

Granted. Criminals commit crimes; that is why they are called "criminals".

I hate educators that feel they know it all and don’t know shit about life outside a book.

And I don't have much regard for an ignorant fool that gets up on his high horse when he is given the facts to relieve his ignorance.

There’s a real world out there, with real people and some don’t even care about the law, can you believe that
    LOL

There's a real world out there, with real people that have experience you don't. Can you believe that?

If guns ever cease to be banned on college campuses, I–and every other professor on the face of the earth–will quit immediately, and nobody will replace us. Because, while in your dream world, some kind of Rambo pops up to save the day, the reality is that all you’ll see is a huge increase in the number of DD posts about how some jackhole killed his girlfriend outside of class. Or killed his professor because he didn’t get the Special Snowflake A+++++ he thought he deserved. You point to ONE instance of someone grabbing a gun and stopping violence on campus? I can show you 20x that many instances of failing students who decided to take it out on their professor by running out to the car, getting a gun, and throwing down a real “game changer.” College today is full of students who have grown up feeling entitled to a A just for breathing, and trust me, they don’t take well to be told that 2+2 does not equal 5. They’re under pressure, and living alone for the first time, and facing the adult world for the first time–and in many cases, finding out that they don’t have what it takes, and maybe should have paid attention in high school. And whose fault is it? Everyone else, but never, ever the student. And you think it’s a good idea to bring easy on-campus access to guns into the mix? Worst. idea. ever. I certainly agree that guns don’t belong in schools, shouldn’t be made readily available to just anyone, you should have a good reason to have a gun and it should be registered. Problem is they are readily available, some states have decent gun laws some have none, many places you can buy a gun on the streets. Any nut can place automatic weapons & plenty of ammo in a backpack, all the collage shooting situations I can remember, where premeditated and prepared for in advance, with some interesting firepower, so you may want to quit as soon as possible. No guns allowed on campus hasn’t really worked all that well. if someone decides to bring one no way to stop them. I can’t believe you think telling a killer they can’t bring a gun will stop them from bringing one. Hey new Yorkers stop illegally parking your cars, there that should do it, I wonder how the city is going to make up for the lack of funds now?

There is so much wrong with so many of your assumptions.

Let's start with the most egregious first:
Any nut can place automatic weapons & plenty of ammo in a backpack

    Umm, no he can't.

Automatic weapons (those that fire more than one round with one pull of the trigger) have been strictly regulated since 1934 and the registry has been closed since 1986. The same M60 GPMG I could have bought for $6000 in 1992 is now well over $20,000 because demand is skyrocketing while supply is fixed.

You won't walk into Wal-Mart and buy a submachine gun or a M16. Nor will you find one on eBay. And if you do find one on-line its sale to you will be contingent upon your local chief law enforcement officer signing off on the ATF Form 4 -- assuming your state allows you to possess an automatic weapon.

Second, of course, is this little jewel:
some states have decent gun laws some have none

This is quite a statement you have made -- that some states have no gun laws. Please identify those states that have no gun laws.

I am not aware of any state that has no gun laws. They all regulate who may purchase, who may possess, who may carry and when and where they may carry, and when a firearm may legally be used against another person.

And who can resist this bon mot:
many places you can buy a gun on the streets.

Are you conflating the legal sale of a legally-owned firearm with the sale of a stolen firearm? Sorta sounds like it to me.

If you're not then yes, there are some states that do not force two private individuals who are transferring legally-owned personal property from one to the other to pay fees to the state to effect that transfer. Federal law, however, states that both parties must be residents of the same state if that legally-owned personal property is a firearm. It also states that the transfer may not be made if the seller has reason to suspect the buyer is prohibited from possessing firearms.

All this information is available at both Wikipedia and at the NRA. Take your pick.

Any nut can place automatic weapons & plenty of ammo in a backpack, all the collage shooting situations I can remember, where premeditated and prepared for in advance, with some interesting firepower, so you may want to quit as soon as possible. No guns allowed on campus hasn't really worked all that well. if someone decides to bring one no way to stop them. I can't believe you think telling a killer they can't bring a gun will stop them from bringing one. Hey new Yorkers stop illegally parking your cars, there that should do it, I wonder how the city is going to make up for the lack of funds now?

Actually my dad graduated from Va. Tech back in the late 50's (it was VPI then), and he says that when he attended college there, almost all male students had guns and kept them in their dorms. Granted it was because the hunting game up in that area is abundant, but he thinks if guns were still allowed, there would be less violence. I know I would think twice about going on a shooting spree if I knew my neighbors were all excellent hunters with scopes!

Not local, so I cannot answer; but I also wonder: Is it common in the US for the rent to be heat and/or electricity included? Dormitories and bed-sits might have that in Northern Europe, flats almost never.

Heat would depend on what was in the lease. My first apartment and my last one included it in the rent. The one in the middle had electric heat incorporated in the air conditioners.

As far as electricity, I cannot speak to any place except the three I rented. I paid for all of the electricity I used in all three apartments, which was an inducement to keep them a little warmer during the summer and the second place a little cooler in the winter than if the electricity had been included in the rent.

You probably don't want to be teaching in Utah then, because that is exactly what happened there.

Sure wonder who is teaching there at the college level now.

You point to ONE instance of someone grabbing a gun and stopping violence on campus? I can show you 20x that many instances of failing students who decided to take it out on their professor by running out to the car, getting a gun, and throwing down a real “game changer.”

snopes has an article on the threat of "fan deaths" in South Korea. Seems in South Korea people believe that having a fan blow on a sleeping person will kill them. Is anybody knowledgeable enough about Chinese customs, culture, and mythology to be able to state whether Zhu's home province has the same belief?

The thing with the thermostat …. I just assumed that he was saving money on heat?

The last apartment I lived in had hot water heat, with baseboard radiators. The heat was folded into the rent, so if I chose to unplug the thermostat it wouldn't save me any money. And as cold as it gets here in Flyover Country (-20 Fahrenheit, or -29 Celsius) I would have had burst pipes too, if I had done that. I guess that was what was coloring my thoughts on this matter.

The apartment before that had dual through-the-wall air conditioning/heating units to deal with the desert heat (120 Fahrenheit, or 49 Celsius), but those units had independent thermostats so I could keep the living room comfortable during daylight hours then cool or heat the bedroom at night and only run one at a time. It was a crude implementation of zoned A/C, if you will. The place before that furnished hot water heat and each unit had an independent air conditioner incorporated in the ductwork, so the only cost for heat was that for the electricity required to run the fan.

Is there anybody local that can answer what the arrangements were for heating Zhu's apartment?

I am still bothered by his not fleeing after he murdered Miss Yang before witnesses like that. The thing with the thermostat and the woodpile keeps intruding on my consciousness too. And I don’t think it’s impossible his hypothetical psychotic break happened some time before the weather turned cold and people have been dismissing any speech or behavioral oddities as those of a well-liked peer with a touch of the wiseass about him.

The thing with the thermostat .... I just assumed that he was saving money on heat?

Disconnecting the thermostat would make sense from that point of view, as well: His landlord has instigated something that is draining his finances, so he cuts the electricity it runs on. Simple. Not necessarily deranged.

You should probably know I was cleaning up a hairball the cat left in the kitchen about 10 minutes ago. If, you know, I'm going to be your hero and all.

But I did wash my hands when I was done.

I think I’ll reserve final judgment until more facts are known. Has he ever lashed out before? Was he prone to fits of anger when he didn’t get what he wanted? I’d like to hear from his family and friends from childhood to put the whole picture together.

Seems that everyone that knew him at Va Tech was complimentary, except for his apartment manager. He wouldn't turn the heat on in his apartment and the pipes froze (and broke) more than once, and after his landlord installed a thermostat that stayed set at 65 degrees 24/7 he pulled the circuit breaker to it. Plus he had a fairly large stockpile of wood (whether firewood, lumber, or scrap wood is not given in the article) in the middle of his living room.

Psychotic break, though? No. This was premeditated. He brought the knife with him. He had already decided that if she rejected him - she would die. Had he killed her with something that was lying around the cafe`, I would say he snapped. The fact that he brought the murder weapon with him makes a snap unlikely.

I also know Herb Mullin, who was definitely schizophrenic, decided not to stab Bob Francis and bought a gun to shoot him with, ultimately shooting Kathy, David, and Daemon Francis and Jim and Joan Gianera with it. His break with consensus reality happened some five years or more before he shot the Francises and the Gianeras.

I don't know. I can't dismiss a psychotic break, nor can I identify unadulterated evil from the information the papers and TV stations have handed out.

If I am right — that Zhu bought a high-grade chef’s knife explicitly because it had the heft and edge, if only for one stroke, to decapitate Miss Yang — that adds one more piece to the puzzle. And puts us, or at least me, one step closer to making sense of this senseless crime.

Thank Jesus that guns are banned from these places of learning. We’d all hate for a true blooded American to get in the middle of this little tiff and throw down a game changer.

Good to see how everyone in institutions of lower learning are all a bunch of me first, no self sacrificing, pacifist, tree hugging pussies.

Now, think back several years. Someone was getting stupid and shooting classmates. A real man ran out to his car, got his gun, came back and put the dog down. Game over man. Game over.

Get off your macho high horse. When I signed on to teach college, I signed on to do exactly that--be a teacher. Not become some kind of a one-person SWAT team. How exactly do you suppose it would go down if, in the midst of a violent situation, someone who is not a trained weapons expert tried to be the big hero and accidentally shot and killed a student bystander? How do you think THAT would go over? Do you think universities are full of nothing but 19 year-old gun enthusiasts with 20/20 eyesight? If I thought I had the physical skills and fortitude to take on the responsibility of snipering out an armed maniac, I would have joined the Special Forces. But since 5'3" nearsighted asthmatic women aren't generally a military recruiter's wet dream, I became a college teacher instead. So I could, you know, help people get learnin' and stuff. For not much money, either, considering how many years of grad school I had to finish to get the job. How exactly does that make me a me-first, no self-sacrificing pussy?

If guns ever cease to be banned on college campuses, I--and every other professor on the face of the earth--will quit immediately, and nobody will replace us. Because, while in your dream world, some kind of Rambo pops up to save the day, the reality is that all you'll see is a huge increase in the number of DD posts about how some jackhole killed his girlfriend outside of class. Or killed his professor because he didn't get the Special Snowflake A+++++ he thought he deserved. You point to ONE instance of someone grabbing a gun and stopping violence on campus? I can show you 20x that many instances of failing students who decided to take it out on their professor by running out to the car, getting a gun, and throwing down a real "game changer." College today is full of students who have grown up feeling entitled to a A just for breathing, and trust me, they don't take well to be told that 2+2 does not equal 5. They're under pressure, and living alone for the first time, and facing the adult world for the first time--and in many cases, finding out that they don't have what it takes, and maybe should have paid attention in high school. And whose fault is it? Everyone else, but never, ever the student. And you think it's a good idea to bring easy on-campus access to guns into the mix? Worst. idea. ever. Because it will be Game Over man, Game Over for higher ed, period.

Yeah. Drunken frat boys with guns. THAT'S a good idea. *eye roll*

    Really?

    I don't.

We have a young woman, not much more than a child, struck dead literally in the blink of an eye. I am trying my Goddamnedest to make some sort of sense out of it, and I can't. There is no scriptwriter sitting by the pool typing, "And then he . . ." on his laptop; this is real life. Like I said yesterday, real life doesn't have to make sense while fiction does.

If I cannot make sense out of the entire thing (and I don't know that I ever can), maybe I can make some sense out of one little piece of it. One little piece like, say, how Zhu was able to decapitate Miss Yang before anybody became aware that there was a problem occurring.

If I am right -- that Zhu bought a high-grade chef's knife explicitly because it had the heft and edge, if only for one stroke, to decapitate Miss Yang -- that adds one more piece to the puzzle. And puts us, or at least me, one step closer to making sense of this senseless crime.

    Amen.

You know, it really does remind me of the greyhound bus decapitation, and all of the discussion we had on DD about whether the passengers could/should have done anything, whether it would have mattered, etc. In that case, though, it took a little while for the decapitation — ie, the attacker stabbed his victim, everyone left the bus, THEN he decapitated him, if memory serves. And it took awhile for help to arrive. In this case, it sounds like the whole thing was over in a minute or two. 911 was called, and when the first responder got there 1-2 minutes later, he was holding her severed head. I can’t begin to fathom how he did it so quickly, but it doesn’t sound like there was much opportunity for anyone to save this poor woman.

Yes, Ruby apparently it was done very quickly but I can’t fathom a kitchen knife that is sharp enough to do that. Maybe it was a ginsu knife. Okay I’m prepared to be bashed for that comment.

I went to the forum and followed up the newspaper links in the posts there. One referenced finding paperwork for a chef's knife in Zhu's apartment. A quick spin across the 'web found me a 14" "cooking knife" (which is for all intents and purposes the same thing, save the tip is a little straighter). My own cheap chef's knife has an 8" blade, but while it is almost sharp enough to shave with it doesn't have the mass to make that cut in one stroke. I suspect a premium chef's knife with a 10" or longer blade would, assuming the killer didn't care about the edge. And somehow I doubt Zhu was really thinking much about the knife's edge at that moment.

Well if you wanted to get tech, I guess China, Asia, Japan would be far eastern countries as opposed to middle eastern. My point was that both of our lunatics where of Asian decent.

So was Mahatma Ghandi; therefore your "point" is, well... pointless.

I believe asian cinema is very big into gory movies and severing heads in these movies is a very popular trend.

American cinema is very big into gory movies, and the severing of heads in these movies is also a very popular trend.
Beheading occurs far more often that many of us realize in murderous crimes, research a few serial killers, and you will find it to be a somewhat common theme amongst lust murders; Ted Bundy, Danny Rollings, Edmund Kemper, and Jeffry Dahmer are but a few of many who have engaged in such atrocious behaviors on random victims. For more personal murders, or to make an example of a victim who enraged their killer(s), we have only to research organized crime or drug cartels to see
how prevalent the theme of decapitation is in American and other Western societies.

I get what you’re saying, but neither of these VT killers were middle eastern, they were both Asian. Asshole Cho was Korean, and Asshole Zhu is Chinese.

I’m wondering if maybe witnesses didn’t do anything because it says that it didn’t seem provoked, like they were just talking one minute and the next he has her head off. No fighting or yelling, etc. to worry people into making a call sooner.
That's sort of what I was thinking, too. But I wonder if/when they'll make public whatever it is that they found in that letter (or whatever it was) found in his apartment.

If these students are anything like mine, and my niece and nephew, they pretty much go on by life with blinders on -- like if it doesn't directly affect them at that moment, it's not important. For instance, none of them even know about the Caylee/Casey issue in FL (except my niece who just graduated and started teaching 4th grade, "early childhood education", at a Title 1 school). The three others just give me this blank look.

I get sick of people saying "I don't watch the news; it's too depressing." But these are the very folks who bitch first and don't even know the facts.

Just venting. I know my niece's s/o will be having a horrible weekend, and pretending like he's ok.

The only additional info on the local NBC affiliate was that the apartment complex in which he lived had constant problems with him, most specifically he refused to turn on the heat which resulted in burst water pipes (numerous occasions). The management called LE who said they could do nothing since it was a management/tenant affair. He also had a pile of wood in the middle of his living room area of the apartment but didn't say why. Also accused maintenance staff of stealing his "stuff" when they would come to fix his broken water pipes.

I believe the name of the complex was Sturbridge and they had a short interview with the manager. But nothing criminal, just an annoying tenant according to LE, who bugged management quite a bit.

Also said the Chinese Embassy is working on getting his family over here to make sure he's getting proper legal representation.

Don't have a link but maybe Special does. She's better at that stuff than I am. I was watching NBC12.com, but I'm sure it was on all the local stations.

This is really awful. I just don't understand how he could've decapitated her in one to two minutes, which is when the first responder arrived, and he was already holding her head up.

I wonder if the parents from the Norris Hal incident will now be wanting more money. They've only partially settled; some things are still outstanding. I think I would've just withdrawn my child from that school, and they had that option I believe.

That's a quick crush there, I don't think it was a matter of her rejecting him. He had made the comment on his blog that he was so upset about the stocks all he could think of was killing someone or killing himself.

If it was a love thing gone bad, he would have more than likely killed her when they were alone, it seems like he was trying to make some kind of statement here. Obviously it wasn't a sudden fit of rage or passion, he planned it..he brought a large kitchen knife with him and proceeded to kill her in a very public place.

Size of the person is not even an issue, IMO. You just said it more clearly than I did. And I know the things that went down in Norris Hall that day. My niece's s/o is not a small dude compared to the carnage left by Chu, who had documented problems.

(They just said new details on 11pm news, local, NBC12.com).

Looks like he may have carried a torch for her. I suspected as much.

Thanks to all the onlookers who went out the door assholes and elbows rather than put a boot up this 3.7? cock carrying piece of shits ass. Every one of their man cards has been revolked and voided for life. We all know how dangerous a 140 pound asian economics student can be.

Damn, Swade, let it go for shits sake. And yes, I know you're not talking to me. I'm just saying. You keep going on and on and on. It's done. We get it.

    Next.

I guess you've apparently forgotten how the first incident went down. Completely different type of situation.

As I said in a comment above, my nieces s/o was actually in the building. Lots of things have changed now. However, not everything can be predicted.

There must be more to it than stock loss, though, or I would've slaughtered a certain person by now.

Well V, I call them like I see them. Do you get points for running interference?? If Rube wasn't trying to be rude in the first place she would have said something like.."Hey Swade im pretty sure its far east or "hey swade its far eastern isn't it. instead of the smart ass way it was said.
