Carpentersville, IL–After 16-month-old Benjamin Kingan suddenly died on Wednesday, both the family and the police thought that perhaps a seizure or something congenital caused his unexpected death. The family put death notices in newspapers and began funeral preparations. His funeral was to be held Saturday…friends and family were coming in from out of town to say good-bye. Then the coroner called. Benjamin was the victim of a homicide.
Lincolnshire Police Chief Randy Melvin: ‘Our initial investigation seemed to indicate that it was natural causes, or possibly something congenital. Further investigation revealed … the infant had suffered a severe fracture to the top of the head.’ The funeral was canceled and the investigation continued.
Benjamin died at the hands of Melissa Calusinski, a teacher’s assistant at Minee Subee Child Care Center, where Benjamin was enrolled. Minee Subee attorney Matt Walsh said Saturday that Calusinski has been placed on administrative leave and ‘will not be returning to the facility pending resolution of this matter.’ The center is well regarded in the community and there are no prior incidents or complaints.
Melissa, who had worked at the center for over a year, was in a room with Benjamin, another adult, and seven other children. Shortly after 3:00 p.m., in a fit of rage and frustration, Melissa picked Benjamin up and threw him onto the floor. She was upset because he was ‘making noise and stuff like that.’ Yeah, he’s a KID you idiot bitch! Police said the other adult in the room didn’t see it happen.
After being thrown to the floor, Benjamin was able to grab a blanket and crawl to a bouncy chair, where he passed out minutes later. That one sentence broke my heart.
Less than a half-hour later, Melissa realized that the baby was unresponsive and she called for help. Benjamin was pronounced dead at the hospital an hour later. Lake County Prosecutor Steve Scheller said the boy’s skull was fractured with ‘force consistent with a drop from the top of a one- or two-story building.’
Lake County Coroner Richard Keller noted that because it takes time for swelling and bleeding in the brain to reach fatal levels, it’s not unusual that the boy had the ability to crawl after being thrown to the ground. ‘These injuries are not immediately fatal,’ he said. The autopsy showed no outward signs of injury, the bruising was beneath the skin.
Melissa Calusinski, 22, is being charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Her bond has been set at $5 million.
