Fresno, CA – Everyone failed ten-year-old Seth Ireland. Seth’s birth father abused him until he lost his rights. Seth’s mother, Rena Ireland, then got a new man, LeBaron Vaughn, 32. Vaughn also beat Seth. Rena Ireland didn’t do anything. Seth’s father didn’t turn over a new leaf and protect his kid. Even Family Services said they saw no reason to remove Seth from Rena’s home.
And now, Seth Ireland is dead. On December 29, he was beaten, punched, kicked and stomped into a coma by LeBaron Vaughn. YesterdayYesterday reviews

Apparently Rena Ireland has “I love abusive assholes” written on her forehead. She also had four children: Seth, 10, two other sons ages 7 and 5; and a month-old infant boy. Lebaron Vaughn, 32, is the father of Rena Ireland’s youngest child. Vaughn also has a record. In 1999 he was convicted of unlawful sex with a minor and served three years probation.
What happened on December 29 is the stuff of nightmares. No one should endure the kind of beatdown Lebaron Vaughn gave Seth. No adult could take it. No fifth-grader could survive it. Vaughn began by slamming his elbow into Seth’s small face. Then he punched the boy in the head and chest “at least ten times”, stomped Seth’s head to the ground with hi size-13 tennis shoes, and stood on the slight, small boy until his body stopped moving. Why? Because Seth had “picked on one of his younger brothers”.
Where was Rena Ireland while all this was happening? In the room. Watching. Watching her penis kill her little boy. It took Seth eight days to die. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday and died in the hospital without ever regaining consciousness. Seth’s last memory was that of his mother watching while her boyfriend beat him.
Seth Ireland had a history of reported abuse, but Family Services says they couldn’t find conclusive evidence that Seth was being beaten so he was not removed from the home despite multiple hotline calls made since AugustAugust reviews
of last year. Seth’s birth father had lost visitation rights after beating Seth with a belt for “over 20 minutes”. In fact, due to that abuse, Seth’s father can’t even claim his son’s body.
Nobody did right by Seth Ireland. Nobody loved him enough to get him safe and keep him that way. I wish I’d known – he could have come to live with me. People, if you can’t stop hitting a child, leave that child. Put ‘em on a bus to the nearest Family Services branch or drop ‘em off at a hospital ER and drive away. It is better to abandon your child than to beat him to death. No child should ever die the way Seth Ireland died.
Two of Seth’s brothers are in the custody of family services; one is with family members. Both Lebaron Vaughn and Rena Ireland have been in jail since December 30. Rena Ireland is currently charged with felony child abuse and is being held on $30,000 bond. Lebaron Vaughn is also charged with felony child abuse, but his bond was set at $580,000. Murder charges are expected later today.

I started to read this one in the forums and stopped. I broke my heart. I read the info now, and I feel like crap. So many people around him. No one saved him. Not even the one who was supposed to love him the most. I hope the both get beat like he did when they go to jail. They deserve it.

Family services suck! The system is broken! They’ll take a child from a middle class family while looking into minor issues, but never seem to have a reason to save a child from no/low income drugged out abusers. If you’re middle class and someone claims you slapped your child, they’ll swarm all over you and take the child, you have to get a lawyer & see a psychiatrist and go through hell. If your drugged out of your mind & have no money, your children can be black & Blue from head to toe and they see no reason to protect/remove the child

When my 10 year old comes home from school I am going to hug him so hard, It brings tears to my eyes trying to think of my boy going through that hell, and to have your slut mother watching, the boy was probably crying out for her to help….omg I am so mad I can’t see straight…I’m ready to run to the school and hug him in front of all his friends…

At first glance, when I look at his picture, I see a little boy who is intelligent, good-hearted, with a sense of humor. When I look at him longer, I see sadness in those eyes.
That poor baby probably lived every day of his life thinking that he was a bad kid and that beatings were normal. Why? Why couldn’t they have taken him away from his mother as well, when she didn’t protect him the first time?
I realize that parents have the first responsibility to protect a child, but Child PROTECTIVE services exist for a reason. Sadly, until protective services is held accountable for their lack of action and/or parenting classes are required by law for all, this type of thing will continue to happen.

I know people just like her-women who would choose their asshole man over their own children. I have seen women leave their kids with anyone – just to take thier man to a concert . I have watched a woman tell her 4 kids that she can’t afford to take them to an amusement park for Halloween, as she walks out the door with her man-to go to that same amusement park. That same woman won’t even give her kids lunch money-she relies on the kids asking family around the neighborhood for money. Makes me physically ill.

Rena Ireland, the word “mother” should never be attached to your name. You failed miserably as a mother and let your little boy endure years of beatings. I hope his final beating will be forever burned in your memory to some day haunt you. I hope you saw his eyes, the eyes pleading for mercy, for help from the one person he should have been able to count on… if my prayers are answered, you will be haunted.
Seth you were remarkable. In your 10 years, I am sure you suffered a lot of abuse. And still as I look at your picture, you found something to smile about. If I could I’d hug you and tell you how special you were.

This article is a sad example of what can come of faulty media coverage. Seth’s father should not be grouped along with the monsters who did this to him. i was outraged to see the news report the accusations, key word accusations, about the father and the apparent 20 minute beat down with a belt. its even more disturbing to see institutions such as this run with what they hear on television and report it as fact. Here are the facts, Seth’s father had been trying to gain custody of his son and save him from this situations for several months prior to this incident. He loved his son and was fighting for him the legal way, unfortunately, the system failed him and CPS failed to do fulfil their purpose. His father is not an abuser, he got screwed over by CPS, and now in his mourning, is getting screwed over by articles like this.
A media who gets their information from the family members of the murderer (the fresno bee) should be a give away about what sort of bias opinion the people will recieve. its irresponsible to conjure up an entire article based off of ACCUSATIONS you hear on television. the truth will come out.

Notsospeechless: Seth’s father could not claim his son’s body because of the autopsy.
Seth was not an unwanted child. His father wanted him very badly and loved him. this article is very irresponsible and i encourage readers to look elsewhere for a legitimate article with facts, not an opinion.
for those of you who will not, do not believe everything you read. Seth’s father was fighting for him and loved him and wanted him. The monsters who killed him did not want this, however, and did everything in their power to prevent this, including blaming his biological father for abuse that they were responsible for. The mother even later confessed to this. If the father got custody then they lost their child support money.
im devasted by this entire event, and disgusted at the irresponsibilty of this article for condemning a man who is going through hell right now despite doing everything the flawed law (CPS) would allow, to save his little boy.

Well asdf, I am a bit confused by all of this. In general a good loving father would not have to fight with CPS for his son? I am not saying they don’t make mistakes, we all know they do make HUGE mistakes but wouldn’t the system have to have some sort of evidence that Seth’s father was responsible for the beating with the belt? Wasn’t Seth old enough to tell LE who was responsible for the beating?
I am not trying to point fingers and claim I know what happened, its just that I know a girl who lost hers kids and “claims” she is fighting to get them back. However her idea of fighting to get her kids back is going to the bar every night, doing drugs, whoring around, partying etc…. yet just by talking to her you would think she is the most loving mother in the world who misses her kids and is doing everything in her power to get them back.
I am sorry for the loss of little Seth. He deserved a much better life. He deserved hugs and kisses. I cant imagine his pain in the final moments of his life.

Ms Boss, in case you hadnt noticed CPS is a completely useless institution and absurdly incompetent. it may be hard to accept at this moment, but i promise you that as this case progesses you will realize just how badly CPS screwed this one up. Its proof that the law is unjust, and Seth’s father’s initial custody rights were just as unfair. As for seth being old enough to tell who was beating him, seth was terrified of Vaughn. when his 13 yr old neighborhood friend was asked on the news if seth ever spoke about the abuse, he said no, but you could tell when he would have his bad days because he was very quiet. when i heard this my heart sank because i could sympathize with being so utterly frightened by somebody that you stay silent because you dont want to make the situation even worse. its easy to look at a situation and say, well why didnt they just say something, but once you’ve been in that position its easy to understand. I’m sure others who read this and have been there will know exactly what i am talking about. Sadly, seth was smart not to say anything, because if he had its not like CPS would have proteced him anyway. he most likely would have still been stuck in the situation except with an even more angry Vaughn.
Fortunately, not all parents fighting for custody of their children are like your irresponsible friend. All i can say is what i have already expressed, Seth’s father wanted him, loved him, and was fighting for custody. He is a man that got royally screwed over in every attempt he took to save his son. this is all already beginning to come out to the public, and if the readers of this article search other sources other than this one, you wont have to take my word for it.

asdf if what you state is true then my heart goes out to Seths father, however since I stumbled upon this sight I have noticed it is very rare that they report things that are not true…. (and sometimes they predict things that end up becoming actual facts) Some of the comments become fairly opinionated but the stories generally report the facts….
When I asked about Seth being old enough to state who abused him I was not speaking of Vaughn…. that entirely is a different story. In the case of when Seth was reportedly beaten by his father, was it Seth who reported that abuse (to his mother, teacher, bus driver, whatever)? I can fully understand him not talking of the abuse but CPS would not just take the word of Seth’s mother… there had to be more to that story.
Again, I am sorry for the loss of little Seth. I just hope that anyone and everyone that ever affected that child in a negative way will pay.

Reminds me of the Erin Maxwell case – CPS had clear evidence this child was being abused but did nothing and then afterwards makes excuses for their failure. CPS either takes kids away from good homes or does nothing until they’re in a body bag.

I am his uncle and brother to Joseph Hudson(Seth’s Dad).I was able to be with Seth and our family for his last days with us. We miss him. I am not about to defend my brother for anything except that he asked for help with this. I honor and love my Brother. Thank You again and God Bless Us All.

I’m not defending her skanky ass in any way – this is no excuse, but she looks like she took months of beatings from the dick wad, too. She just looks so out of it – no soul. MAYBE she wouldn’t come to Seth’s aid or she’d get a whooping. Most of us on here wouldn’t put up with that shit, or would gladly get a walloping before allowing our children to, but not everyone has that mentality, especially if she’s been beaten and mentally abused over a period of time. “Battered Wife Sydrome” – like quite a few years ago when Hedda Nussbaum allowed her husband, Joseph Steinberg murder their daughter, Lisa. That story will stick with me for life.

This is to the poster who stated that CPS wouldn’t have just taken the mom’s word that the child was abused. I have a difference of opinion with that comment.
I have a friend that was convicted of child rape on the mom’s say. No rape kit was done on this girl (age 12). There was never any DNA taken and the man was actually given custody of this girl AFTER he was charged with raping her because Mamma found a new man. Only when he was convicted was this girl removed from his custody. It didn’t matter that the day of his trial, the little girl was in court with her mom. She was NEVER questioned about what happened. This man served 25 years of his life in prison for something he didn’t do. The little girl denied it happened. She even told the social worker that she was sexually active….with her 15 year old brother!!
She is now in her 30’s and to her, this is still her dad. There is nothing he can do about it because there was a time limit to prove his innocence. He’s also done his 25 years and is determined to live what life he has to the best he can. If they thought for one minute this man was guilty then why does he have access to his grandchildren and children? Three of his grandchildren are from the step daughter he allegedly raped. She remembers who did it and she has told for many years who did it. But, he’s already been convicted and done his time so no one wants to re-open this case.
So, yes CPS, mothers, fathers, neighbors etc….all fail children in some cases.

My husband and I are fighting to get our daughter back. They took our daughter because we had hit a rough spot financially and because they felt we were “depriving” our child because I chose to stay home and take care of her instead of put her in a daycare and get her speech therapy (she’s only 23 months!). Then I read stories like this and it just makes me physically ill. This is a case where CPS were NEEDED, and they turned their backs. Now little Seth is dead. R.I.P little guy. Hopefully your happier now then you were in life.

23 months is a little early to be deciding if a child needs speech therapy unless they have some kind of physical ailment in or around the mouth.
and in this economy not many can afford that shit.
I don’t know if you’ve told us the whole story, but I’ve posted here before that CPS is a joke. One day they will jump and take a child out of a safe loving environment over a minor issue, the next day they will visit a home where abuse and filth are present and the first grade children smoke cigarettes and they just tell the parents to please stop and clean up give them some pamplets and never go back.
