28, 2008, at the age of eight. Kaitlyn wasn’t beaten to death, or hit by a drunk driver – but her death is just as pointless, snuffed out just as carelessly. Kaitlyn died because her mother, Amber Sky Bertram, 29, couldn’t be bothered to monitor her daughter’s blood sugar. Which normally wouldn’t be a problem, except that Kaitlyn was an insulin-dependent diabetic.Â
Kaitlyn, a second grader at Grissom Elementary School, loved to sing and dance, according to her obituary. She looks like a sweet child with a pretty smile – and a pair of neglectful parents. A Myspace purportedly belonging to her birth father, Troy Borson, makes no mention of either of his daughters and suggests that he’d like children “someday”.  And Amber Bertram had been under Child Protective Services supervision for medical neglect of Kaitlyn from February to OctoberOctober reviews of this year. Less than two months after CPS closed the file, Kaitlyn died of juvenile Type I diabetes.
Type I diabetes can shorten a child’s life span even when carefully monitored. If a child has brittle diabetes, where the blood sugar swings wildly and erratically, even the best parents end up in the hospital a lot. But good parents of diabetic kids monitor their children’s blood sugar multiple times a day. Type I kids take insulin shots – a lot of them. Sometimes a tiny unit dosage adjustment can make the difference between a happy, healthy kid and a dead kid. I suspect that Kaitlyn was a brittle diabetic. Which makes it all the more ridiculous that Amber Bertram let Kaitlyn develop flu-like symptoms without checking her blood sugar or taking her to the ER.
On November 26, Kaitlyn got sick. In fact, she’d been sick for several hours with hallmark signs of hyperglycemia – high blood sugar.  Now, Amber Bertram was under court order to check Kaitlyn’s blood sugar four to six times a day and obtain immediate medical care for a problem – but Amber didn’t do that. Instead, she apparently waited until Kaitlyn was unconscious to call 911 for help. Kaitlyn was taken to the hospital via helicopter, because medical personnel do not jack around with diabetic kids who won’t wake up. Why? Because they die, that’s why. And Amber Bertram, after months of supervision by CPS and education on her daughter’s illness, KNEW THAT.
On arrival, medical staff tried to stabilize the little girl, but she was already in a diabetic coma that didn’t respond to an insulin drip – she’d already suffered cerebral edema, or swelling of the brain. Because Amber Bertram wouldn’t get off her ass and get help for her child, Kaitlyn Borson died a death that was utterly senseless and completely preventable.
I’m so pissed about this. As a nurse, I’ve cared for diabetic kids. It’s just not that hard, people. You check the blood sugar, you check the sliding scale, you adjust the unit dosage based on the scale, you shoot the kid in the leg or the arm with a very small needle, you’re done. Five minutes max, four or six times a day. The kid feels it more than you do. Not to check, not to keep supplies, not to give your child insulin on time every time … well, hell. She might as well have tossed her daughter out of a moving car, or over a bridge. And Muncie police agree with me.

. She is being held without bail in the Delaware County Jail, where she is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death. Two other children in the home were removed by CPS – something they should have done with Kaitlyn months ago.

This is another classic and sickening example of WHY people should be required to pass a parenting course and a mental health evaluation before being able to reproduce! All it takes is wham, bam and a chick can have a kid! Amazing. You have to take a course and pass a test to get a driver’s license, but not to become parents. Ugh.
And I would hold CPS partially responsible for this. If they had a suspicion and certainly had a case open, closed, pending, whatever against this cunt, they should have TAKEN the little girl knowing she was needy and the mother was neglecting her! They could have placed her somewhere that she would be tended to and cared for. The system is always failing the children and we don’t find out til it’s too late. And OF COURSE this was Indiana. *smh*

Diabetes is nothing to play with. Most people and especially PARENTS of children diagnosed are completely devastated. Coming from a long line of severe diabetics, I am particularly concerned with this disease.
However, I assume that your ass really didn’t give a damn that your precious child needed help. It’s not bad enough that she had this shitty, fucked up disease and had to endure stabs to monitor her sugar AND multiple shots per day, but you didn’t give a fuck.

Hi guys….I am a long time lurker but finally decided to create a user name to join in on all the fun.
This story got me. When I was working EMS I picked up my share of diabetic children in crisis. The look of fear and helplessness in the face of the parents is heart wrenching. I don’t understand how this woman could have sat by and let this child suffer and die.
You guys are doing great work here. Public shame is the best deterrant

If a “mom” sucks so much at being a mom that she needs a court order to monitor her child’s illness, why the FUCK does that court allow her to take said child home?
I have a family full of adult diabetics and have seen what can go wrong and its pretty obvious at times when their sugar is off. I can only imagine what that poor child was feeling like, being sick and not having mommy care that you are sick.

I have been a type 1 diabetic for 30 years. At first, I thought that I might be defending the mom because an 8 year old may not be able to communicate how a low blood sugar feels. After reading further and seeing that it was high blood sugar and not low blood sugar appauls me. That is something that takes time. This didnt happen in an hour or even 5. That poor child had to be drinking water non stop and going pee non stop. It is truly disgusting that some people are allowed to reproduce.

Doctors say mom not ultimately responsible for daughter’s death
An at-home blood sugar-monitoring device disappears, while the charge against Amber Bertram is lowered.
MUNCIE — Police have lowered the preliminary criminal charge against the mother of a diabetic second-grader who suffered lethargy, falling down, sliding off the toilet and other symptoms before dying.

“I can’t prove she caused the death,” said city police Sgt. Linda Cook, referring to Amber Sky Bertram, 29, the mother of Kaitlyn Mae Borson, an 8-year-old Grissom Elementary School student who died the day after Thanksgiving.
Cook abandoned the preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent causing death, a Class A felony, and obtained a warrant to re-arrest Bertram, of 1619 E. 20th St., on a new charge of neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony.
The case against Bertram changed after doctors at Clarian North Medical Center in Carmel, where Kaitlyn was flown after initially being treated at Ball Memorial Hospital, telephoned Cook on Monday and gave an alternative cause of death.
Bertram took Kaitlyn to Ball Hospital the day before Thanksgiving.
She had a high blood sugar level of 377 milligrams per deciliter (normal is 80-180 mg/dL), leading to a diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis, or diabetic coma, according to Cook.
The officer disclosed new evidence — including the disappearance of an at-home blood sugar monitoring device — against Bertram.
The disclosure was made in an affidavit of probable cause to arrest her.
Circuit Court 1 Judge Marianne Vorhees determined that probable cause existed to re-arrest the defendant on the lesser charge. Bond was set at $5,000. Bertram was originally jailed without bond on the first charge.
Kaitlyn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, formerly known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes, when she was 2.
“(Bertram) has a prior substantiated case with the Division of Child Services of medical neglect from February 2008 through October 2008 for failure to provide proper diabetes management for Kaitlyn,” Cook wrote.
“Throughout Kaitlyn’s diabetic condition, (Bertram) has failed to adequately monitor Kaitlyn’s blood sugar levels, missed several doctor appointments, nutritional counseling appointments, and in general has not managed her mostly high blood sugar readings,” Cook wrote.
Bertram told Cook that Kaitlyn suffered flu-like symptoms — vomiting, lethargy, falling down, sliding off the toilet — the day before she took her to the hospital.
“Bertam has received education (per medical records) relating to Kaitlyn’s diabetes, with knowledge that any illness or infection complicates blood sugar levels,” Cook wrote.
Kaitlyn’s glucometer machine that reads her blood sugar was obtained from Grissom school after Bertram signed a consent to search. The glucometer readings from when Kaitlyn was last in school (Nov. 19-21) showed blood sugar levels from 373 to “HI (over 600),” according to Cook.
School policy is to call the parent(s) when a student’s blood sugar level is consistently high, said Gina Phillips, the nurse at Grissom.
“The home glucometer was reported by (Bertram) to be missing on Nov. 27 (Thanksgiving) after she informed us that she had no problem providing us the glucometer,” Cook wrote.

Well although I didn’t personally know Amber I knew her through a mutual ex boyfriend we had. She led me to believe that her daughter died due the neglect of the hospital. I unfortunately have seen this happen in hospitals here in CT so I thought nothing to the contrary, but after reading these articles if it is NOT her fault then THIS is the ALL TIME cover up!!!
She dragged her kids across the country TWICE (moved) to go to Michigan to be with our ex and he told me MANY stories of her neglect and misuse of his kindnesses toward her and her children. She turned out to be someone I really didn’t know AT ALL!!! SHAME on her for allowing this to happen to her daughter. I also never knew she was under COURT ORDER to care to her medically disabled child.It may have been said in passing by the ex but at the time she led me to believe all that was said was simply words of a jealous guy that wanted her but couldn’t have her idk.
