A brother and sister living near Redwood City were each sentenced today to six months in jail for forcing their developmentally disabled sister to live in a backyard shed with no electricity while they stole her benefit checks.
Bertha Cano Lozano, 46, pleaded guilty in February in San Mateo County Superior Court to felony abuse of a dependent adult. Her brother, Jesus Cano Ramirez, 53, pleaded no contest to felony grand theft.
The case stemmed from the siblings’ treatment of their sister Amelia Ramirez, 58, who was found in November living in a metal shed measuring 8 feet by 10 feet, with a lamp and a small space heater operating from electricity from the main house.
While she lived outside, her siblings allowed seven pit bulls to live inside, said Steve Wagstaffe, chief deputy district attorney. Her brother and sister thought Amelia Ramirez’s living arrangements were “no big deal” and that she wanted to live in the shed, Wagstaffe said.
Lozano and Jesus Ramirez admitted that they had been stealing her $700 monthly Supplemental Security Income checks.
The case was discovered when deputies responded to a call of a fight between Lozano and her daughter and found Amelia Ramirez in the backyard, cold, shivering and waving at them while wearing only a thin gown, Wagstaffe said.
In addition to the jail time, Judge James Ellis ordered Jesus Ramirez to pay $67,000 in restitution, representing a third of the loan he took out on the home that was in his and both sisters’ names, said Deputy District Attorney Melissa McKowan.

And be sure to include the small space heater with a frayed electrical cord.
Can we make the heater’s cord *extra* frayed, and the thin blankets flammable?

well anyway very sad for the sister who is mentally incapable of taking care of herself for whatever reasons and talk about how most families stand with their own BLOOD and do whatever for them and support them i am saddened that these two did not, WOW!!
lock them up in a more smaller shed to share with an outhouse or not

Wow twenty years of happy(fucking)ness. I’m sure she is overwhelmed with gratitude towards both of them.. (seriously,she doesn’t know any better).. And I’m not sure, but I don’t think that any agency checks up on disabled persons. Maybe, a random medical report to prove that they still are disabled, but from birth, highly unlikely. This poor woman was treated like a dog, and they kept her money.. These two fat fucks should at least serve 20 years, exactly like her.. What a couple of fucking scumbags..

I know the neighborhood, not to many people will get involved there, lots of gang activity, buddy lived in the area for a while said he heard gun shots every night, had leaks in his roof from bullet holes a lot of bad shit goes on there. Let’s hope these two have to pay back every penny they stole and and can only afford to live in the shed while the sister lives rest of her life comfortably in the house

Twenty years….she was living in that hell hole. Was nobody checking on her from time to time from the state???
What two pieces of shit these family members are. I hope the judge throws the book at them.
How can someone do this to another family member? No matter how many horror stories I read on here I still have trouble understanding HOW people can do this shit.

What can the answer to this be? If we give people checks for being disabled or being born, they seem to frequently end up in the hands of abusers who are letting the recipient live with them because the check comes each month.

If we don’t assist people in need with money to help them live, they have no money and will probably end up being abused on the streets.

I always think that orphanages and residential mental asylums are better than what people go through with their loving families or friends, but abuse occurs in these situations, too. If we made every person in this country into a social worker we wouldn’t have enough eyes to prevent determined abusers.

I’m rambling, but it’s a subject that worries me.

Twenty fucking years, family members could callously neglect a sibling. I can’t even imagine it.

My father has three siblings, two brothers and a sister. The sister, my aunt Janet, sustained injury during birth. It’s not immediately obvious, but she’s got the capacity of a teenager. She’s impulsive, eccentric and not entirely grounded. As a result, she cannot live on her own. Is it hair-pulling frustration at times? Sure. But I just can’t fathom neglect.

Well, maybe they should go to jail for 20 years since she was in that shed for that long. At least they’ll have heat and air conditioning and running water and electricity. Oh, and food along with a t.v. and books for entertainment. No, their crimes are not being overblown. They’re being held accountable for something they have done for the past 20 years.
