Syracuse, NY–Imani Jennings was 20 months old. She hadn’t quite grasped the whole potty-training thing yet. On Friday, little Imani had an accident and urinated on the floor. For that little accident, she was beaten…brutally. She was beaten for over an hour with a metal rod, a cable wire, a metal bed spring, and the fists of Anthony Weakfall Jr., her mother’s penis. When the beating was over, she was left there to die on the floor, alone. Her 15-year-old abuser didn’t have time to stick around and clean up the mess – he had to get to school.
Hours later, Imani’s mother, 18-year-old Cherron Patterson, returned home from school. She found Imani in the apartment, bloodied and unresponsive. Imani’s face was so beaten and bloodied that it was unrecognizable…her eyes were swollen shut, she was covered in bruises from the waist up. Patterson called 911 from a neighbor’s home. When paramedics arrived at the scene, they pronounced Imani dead. While it is not clear if she was already dead when Weakfall left that morning, it is likely that she died at some point during the day. Alone and in severe pain.
This isn’t a case where her abuser suddenly snapped, Imani had been enduring abuse from her mother and the penis for several weeks. Patterson admitted that she had played a part in the abuse of the child. They would both beat Imani for her potty-training accidents. Investigators also revealed that Imani spent day after day alone in the apartment while Patterson and Weakfall attended school. For the last two weeks, she was left alone with nothing but a bowl of chicken nuggets and a glass of milk to sustain her…for 8 hours a day.
Neighbors say they had no idea that such abuse was being doled out on little Imani. They paint a picture of a happy little family that could be seen playing on the porch together…you never would have known that Weakfall wasn’t her real daddy. There were no previous calls to the home from either the police department or Social Services.
Lee Jennings, Imani’s biological father, asked, “Why? That’s the only question I kept asking myself why would somebody do something like that? What did she ever do to anybody?” Lee had dated Patterson from 2006 to 2007. After the relationship ended, Jennings filed for custody…he loved and wanted that baby girl. Patterson was denying his visitation rights.
Cherron Patterson, now 7 months pregnant with Weakfalls child, is being held on a $50,000 cash bail. She is being charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Anthony Weakfall Jr. is being charged with second-degree murder. While he is currently being held at Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center without bail, he will be charged as an adult.

20 months and potty training….I don’t care how smart you think your child is, 20 months is too young. My daughter learned at 26 months and even when she was training, I thought she was too young to start. She had my encouragment and Ms. Susanna’s (daycare teacher) encouragement. Because of me and her, it took her 2 weeks to learn. How did they expect her to learn if they were never home? You know, now that I think of it, maybe they were teaching her cause they would come home and she’d be full of shit and pee. How awful…to die, alone, and in pain. Just awful…RIP little Imani. I hope you are truly in a better place.

I seriously wish that the government MADE people take birth control, until they could pass some sort of ‘parent test.’ I don’t even care how Brave-New-World-y that sounds. Stuff like this makes me so upset.
Where was the rest of the family? These three were living alone? How were they paying rent? If the family knew they were living alone and going to school, wouldn’t they have known that they were leaving some poor little baby by herself hours and hours at a time??

Yeah right, a happy little family. He was 15, where was his parents? They both are pitiful excuses for human beings. How do you justify leaving your baby alone all day? Its pretty ironic that Bio-mommy and Bio-daddy had the same basic age differene, but its reversed for the new relationship and the new pregnancy.
First baby she is 15ish and he is 18ish. Now she is the 18 year old and the boy is the 15 year old.
Its a shame Cherron didnt allow Lee Jennings to have a more active role in Imani’s life. Things might have turned out better that way.

I can’t believe she was just left alone all day. What did she do? How did she even survive that? The neighbors didn’t hear any crying at all? Sometimes my daughter will just be clingy for the heck of it and if I even walk out of the room she’s crying. They are kids they do that. I also think that if your child is ready to start potty training, there ready, it’s not an age thing, but how in the world do you expect them to learn if you yell/beat them. This story makes me sick. I am perplexed that these 2 were living unsupervised with a 20 mo. old child! This is the ultimate “WHERE WERE THE PARENTS?” story! And he is only 15? NOT living with HIS parents??
Damn good thing I don’t make the laws. I’d not only charge the baby’s parents – but their parents would have some serious “splainin’” to do! Then, I’d go down the line to the school. Someone there knew they had a child.. did no one ever question who cared for her during the day? Next up – Friends of this infamous pair. I have NO doubt that their friends were aware of this shit. Were they all raised by “parents” who never taught them right and wrong? Morals? Values? Compassion? Caring? Love? RESPONSIBILITY?

That photo of him screams “juvenile institution”–the cinder block walls, the wood-veneer “closet” with towels hanging over the door, the other person in the background. Could be some kind of group home or juvenile corrections facility. So, I think it’s safe to say we’re not dealing with a young man from a stable, loving family and/or one who has never come to the attention of “the system.”

I am trying to wrap my head around leaving a 20 month old home alone every day-and not thinking about what she might be doing. I can’t leave my 11 month old alone in a play room-where she is surrounded and safe-for 20 minutes-without checking. How in the hell do you leave her alone for 8 hours straight?
Then to grasp the concept of beating her to a pulp and leaving her lieing there for dead? I am so sick over this, I seriously don’t have words. I can not fathom how scared and in pain she must have been. And then I read somewhere that the mother found her on the couch? He left her lieing on the floor and she found her on the couch? I just envision this baby crawling to that couch and climbing up on it with all her mite-just to die. Makes me so sick-I can’t even focus.
Fucking hope they die slow, painful deaths-ALONE!

Yes I’m on board the “I’m fucking angry and don’t even get how anyone could leave a child alone all day” train, oh, did I say child, I meant A FUCKING BABY! This makes me so sick. My son will be 2 years old a week from today and I haven’t even started to potty train him. I’ll change his diapers til he’s 5 if that’s what I have to do. I can’t imagine even punishing him for having an accident let alone beating him. These kids had to have been on some sort of public assistance. I think that if someone is on public assistance the children should have to have welfare checks on a regular basis and the parents should be required to go through parenting classes. That way they can’t use the defense that they didn’t know any better. Fucking sick. I hate the world sometimes.

I knew Cherron since the beginning of the school year but just last week, we’ve become real close. She showed me pics of Imani and I’ve even seen Imani in school when Cherron would bring her. She used to come to class saying “I love my baby. She’s a little angel and she’s happy all the time.” But I guess we were’nt close enough for her to tell me she’s been hitting on her. I just found out that she’s been hitting her and she also hits her stomach when the baby she’s carrying moves and kicks. She also calls it a smut and a bastard. Evertime I seen Imani, her and Cherron looked so happy, like nothing bad happened at home. I loved Imani like she was part of my family. She was so pretty and innocent. R.I.P. Imani Jennings, I love you and will miss you forever but you truely are in a better place!

Girls like Cherron are doomed to be “breeders”, the more children they have, the more welfare and benefits they get. The family doesn’t want anything to do with the grand kids, they aren’t getting a check for them, and Section 8 (at least that is what it is called here) is picking up the rent. The boys parent(s) don’t care that he is living with an 18 year old, they get their money for him, and don’t have to feed or clothe him.
Until we step up and say we won’t pay for any more of these welfare babies, this is what we are going to keep getting. The system is broken, welfare should be used to train these parents so they can support their families, not to keep popping out more kids.
My condolences to the father of that beautiful baby, no parent should ever have to bury their child.

This story is incredibly disturbing. I am sick thinking about what this baby had endured. I do not care how uneducated this 15 yr old is… His use of inflicting pain to punish this human being, this girl is unforgivable.
I also have to ask do parents, in general, take the time to read up on the latest information of childhood development. I will be matched with a teen mother in my community as a mentor and in our most recent training I learned that children are ready to learn how to use the potty between the ages of 3 to 4. For boys, it is usually between the ages of 3.5 to 4. If you think about all the milestones that babies to young children accomplish between 0-5, we should have the utmost respect for the child and concern for their well being.

I encourage you to anonymously report (and, if you feel inclined, follow up) that this “mother” has and, probably continues, to hit the baby she is carrying. We often think other people know what is going on if we ourselves know – it is a classic pyschology misstep, but making a phone call for the sake of her unborn baby may at least call this “girl” out on her other horrifying act. Maybe this will give this unborn baby a chance with a person or family who will care for it unconditionally.

Don’t blame yourself for not knowing something was wrong. Seeing her in class is not the same as seeing her at home. Baby abusers/killers show only what they want you to see. Regardless of the abuse, Imani loved her mommy… and that’s really sad.
Please do as another poster suggested and call someone (police dept., social services) about her behavior with her unborn child. This way, perhaps they can watch her and prevent another tragedy.
Thank you for posting. Also, thank you for posting so coherently. Seems too many in your generation prefer the “text speak” and “gangsta” language. It’s always refreshing to find a young person who’s actually taking advantage of their education!

I still feel bad. I know people who knew she’d been hitting on Imani. They told me everything after she was arrested. I asked them all wht they never reported anything and they either said ‘I don’t know’ or ‘I knew she was hitting her but I didn’t know it was that bad’. And that’s why I have a problem with people who say spanking is good for their kids, we wouldn’t have problems if parents were allowed to yadda yadda. Maybe, maybe not. The problem with spanking and other forms of physical punishment, most often it’s not gentle swats, it’s out and out beatings. My guess is they were raised with “spankings” and why they thought it was okay. My guess is their brains probably got a beating too.

i also live in syracuse, as a young mother of a 22 month old i have restless nights over this. this poor babygirl was viciously beaten to death over something pitty. i cant imagine how those two scumhole pigs left that child alone like that i have a hard time even going to work & leaving my son with my mom wondering what hes doing or if hes missing me. to leave a child alone for hours by theirselves is cruel. if everyone knew what this pig-whore was doing to this precious child and the unborn child YOU should have reported it and maybe this child would still be alive. i HOPE & PRAY that they both get the living daylights beat out of them in prison, especially that 15 year old wannabe thug have fun in juvi once you’re with the big boys they’re gonna ruin you just like you did Imani’s life. in my city YOU CAN DIAL 2-1-1 from any phone (free at payphones) and get united way they can put you through to report child abuse or find help for someone that is suicidal etc. They can help you if your looking for a homeless shelter etc.

They arrested a daycare worker for being aware of the abuse, and not reporting it. Good, I’m glad to see that the people who could’ve prevented the death a such a beautiful baby are being held accountable for it.
