Tammy Williams Went Too Fast

YoutubeYouTubeYouTube video up top. If you can’t see it, your workplace blows!

Colorado Springs, CO - Tammy Williams. 24, had been driving for the Harrison School District since February. Last Thursday, she was taking kids home following a route she had been driving for around 3 weeks. The route includes a street with a set of dips in them. Tammy slowed down for the first set, but did not do so for the second. Watch the video above and imagine a school bus going over them at a moderate speed. Now imagine kids in the bus, unbuckled of course, and you can get an idea of what happened next. Aside from some of the kids being thrown from their seats, one of them fell out of the back of the bus.

Tammy has since been fired and has now been ticketed with reckless driving resulting in injury. In total, four children were hurt, one of them seriously. By news reports, the serious injury was not the kid who fell out. Seems as if he was standing at the back of the bus holding on to the exit latch when Tammy drove over the dip. He only suffered scrapes and bruises. The most seriously injured was 9-year old Maliah, who suffered a lacerated liver after being thrown in the air and coming to rest on the back of a seat.

A video has been recovered from inside the bus, and will be used as evidence. I’ll get it posted here as soon as it becomes available. One of the injured boys stated that the students were cheering Tammy on as she sped over the dips. So, aside from Tammy’s recklessness in probably just trying to show the kids some fun in a stupid way, why was a kid standing against the back of the emergency exit in the first place, and ultimately, why the fuck aren’t school buses equipped with seatbelts?

Anyway, Here is another video with a quick shot of Tammy as well as an interview with the family of Maliah.

Lastly, could someone get me a better pic of Tammy? She looks kinda hot. THis is the best pic of her I got.

I SMELL A LAWSUIT COMING!!! And that’s for everyone, not just the driver….Although I think I’d file one too if my kid got a lacerated liver from the reckless driving of Ms. Williams. But that’s just me.

The driver was just being stupid, but she seriously hurt Maliah (love that name). I’m sure someone will have to cover the hospital bills. I just don’t get why school buses don”t have seatbelts.

Yeah, my cousin has that name. All of our family was like awww, what a pretty name. But I somewhat think the kids sorta enjoyed being bounced up and down on a bus. I know I did when I was little. Kinda like the first bump was a warning bump to let them know the big one was coming up. At least that’s what my old bus driver used to do. But in this case some one really got hurt.

I’ve never understood how it’s possible that school busses still don’t have seat belts at this late date. Unbelievable. The level of bumping that happened from those dips would have been completely mitigated by seatbelts, instead of throwing the kids around like popcorn in an air popper. :)

I hope Maliah makes a speedy and full recovery, and that Tammy finds a safer line of work away from children.

I actually knew the answer already, as it is a question asked all the time. Supposedly, unless Athena comes in here busting out charts and graphs proving otherwise, the National HighwayTraffic Safety people feel that the compartmentalization of a school bus is effective enough in regards to the most common of bus accidents…the front collision.

In other words, the seats are so fucking close together, that if the bus were to hit anything, the kid ain’t movin 2-feet forward until they hit the back of the seat in front of them.

That all very well may be true, but what that situation does not protect children from is the dreaded rollover, or the cases we see occasionally in which a bus is hit broadside.

Dumb mistake on her part. I cannot bash her too much. Our school bus driver would drive over humps and shit for our amusement as well. She just went a bit too far. I think she has gotten fair punishment…she has been fired, she has been ticketed, and now she may be looking at a lawsuit.

But from what I can see of her, she has large breasts, which means I will feel sympathy for her even had she set the kids on fire with a homemade flamethrower she brought on the bus herself.

I seem to recall reading something recently that (at least in Michigan) new school buses will require seat belts. I’ll be a good commenter and see if I can find the article.

And why does it not surprise me that being “chestally endowed” earns bonus points from Morbid?

OMG!- I just took a closer look at the location, and that’s where some of my family lives. I’ll have to look closer at the map and see if the incident was anywhere near the bus route my nieces take to school.

I find it interesting that everyone knows these “dips” are there, even place a sign there but not one person has done anything to fix the dips….um, is it just me or was that a problem waiting to happen? It could have happened to a parent with a child not in a seatbelt…I know, they should have seatbelts but some stupid parents don’t make the kids wear them. Had the city fixed the dip, the problem would not have happened….or am I missing something here.

They are there on purpose, there is nothing to fix. Some places use these in neighborhoods at stop signs to force drivers who may be tempted to run the intersection. Watch the videos, they both show the dips and how they are placed. I am sure all of you have the residential street that have the speed bumps, right? Really no different.

This wasn’t a case of someone not seeing the dips, this was a case of someone intentionally going over them fast.

Found the reference to seat belt requirements: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081015/SCHOOLS/810150324

The pertinent info is at the top of the article:

School buses to get seat belt, safety rules
David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today will issue final rules that require three-point safety belts on small school buses and taller seats on all school buses.

The new requirement for lap and shoulder safety belts applies only to buses under 10,000 pounds and was proposed last November after a string of high-profile school bus crashes. NHTSA first considered the additional safety steps 6½ years ago and they must be implemented by fall 2011.

Yup, seatbelts should be manditory on school buses. Otherwise, you get kids flying around like the little spheres in a Fisher-Price “vacuum-cleaner.”

I had to take a bus most of my school years and almost took a *F* hour to get to school…hated it. I swore if at all possible my children would not take a school bus…they are so not safe.

Not fond of bus drivers trying to give the kiddos shits-n-giggles with school bus theatrics…the children lives are in their hands. I sure as shit would be pissed if my child was injured with a lacerated liver due to fun-n-games buy the bus driver!

Yeah my bus driver used to drive on the shoulder of the road right on the edge of a pretty steep drop. I used to complain on a daily basis, especially after the one time she tried to go around a tractor trailer that was making a left turn and we almost got hit. I used to DREAD taking the bus, but I lived right on the district line that’s the furthest away from the school so no one would ever want to come pick me up :(

I drove a bus 4 ten years. The students I drove would have used seat belts to beat each other with. Bad Idea. Most school buses have seats now that are taller than most students. If the kids are sitting down, its highly unlikely anyone is going to be seriously injured.

How would a driver enforce 90 kids wearing a seatbelt?

How would a driver enforce 90 kids wearing a seatbelt?

The government doesn’t seem to have an issue trying to enforce thousands to do the same. But as studies have shown, the cost to put some freaking lap belts in a bus are cheap when compared to the safety provided in case of broadsides, rollovers or bumps…something high-back seats have no real effect on in regards to safeguarding.

Just seems funny that no one has an issue with being forced to put your kid in a car seat who is also behind a high-back seat, but don’t question why 50 of the same aged kids can move freely in a metal tube on wheels.

Isn’t it? It’s because it’s all about revenue and liability. Ultimately, school districts pay out less in bus accident settlements than it would cost to retrofit all their buses with belts. Same with public-transportation buses. Besides, they don’t gain anything by enforcing it (i.e. seatbelt ticket revenues for private drivers).

Why so few people realize that the government doesn’t give two shits about our safety is beyond me.

We have a side street leading into our subdivision, very curvy road. The road also HAD a dip, with appropriate signage and school bus route with a stomach-dropping dip. Lots of accidents, tons of complaints, several accidents, even after reducing speed limit from 45 to 35. Smooth move DOT.

The curve/dip was fixed shortly after a firetruck answering a call flipped over and a (volunteer) fireman lost his life (sometime in 2003)

According to the Dept of Transportation budget, that curve/dip was scheduled to be repaired in 2006. It was fixed about 2-3 months after the firetruck accident. (Guess all the other accidents were just considered reckless driving.) However, the spot where the firetruck flipped is a permanent memorial so no one forgets (small community). I don’t know who keeps it up so nice, all cleaned up, not tacky at all. Not much one for roadside memorials, but this one is just plain and simple.

But the stupid part of me misses the dip. I can’t imagine a school bus going over that dip.

But apparently Morbid likes women who are fast and likes to take risks. :) Since he’s come across a better picture, by now it’s printed, enlarged and framed, looking right back at him.

Seatbelts on buses? Then schools couldn’t overload them on routes periodically, like mine did, where kids end up 3 in a sit, the 3rd kid somewhat perched on the edge when all the kids scheduled on a route actually show up.

I remember when I was young, part of my bus route would go over this bridge that was over a creek. Our bus driver would always speed up and all of us kids would get in the aisle, jump up an down and when we would go across the bridge it would launch us up even more. We did it pretty much daily and it was fun. So I can see a bus driver having fun with the kids but, lacerated liver and someone falling out of the bus? Really? Maybe she took it a little too far.

Just insane, really – but I suppose “fast” and “risk-taking” is usually included in that, huh? :P
