Nerds + Moons = Asswhoopin’
October 28, 2008 by Morbid

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – On Friday night at Access Comics, owner Lanny Wolf and two friends, Virgil Vanduisen and Jeffrey Chapman, were playing the card game “Magic: The Gathering”. Now some of the details are vague at this point, but from what I can gather, three men who had been drinking nearby, came into the store, and then left after being asked to leave. Once outside, the men dropped their pants and pressed their asses against the storefront window, causing it to break. This aggravated two of the card players more than having your Bösium Strip destroyed and not having a Beacon of Unrest, so they took off after the men, taking a baseball bat with them.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, Vanduisen, 42, and Chapman, 19, caught up with the mooners about 2 blocks away and allegedly took turns beating on two of the men so badly that the bat broke over one of the mooner’s head. One mooner, 24, suffered a fracture above his eye and the other, 23, suffered a skull fracture and bleeding on the brain. The third man was unharmed.
Now the two card players will face charges of felony assault, a charge that could have them facing life in prison. The daughter of one of the attackers states they were just chasing the men down to help police, and took the bat for protection. Feel kinda bad for the card players, though. Not condoning everything they did, as they should have just let the law handle this one, but I do get a little amusement out of the fact that two drunken assholes might face malicious mischief and disorderly conduct charges…and will have their friends know they got their asses sent to the hospital after mooning Magic: The Gathering players.
(I’ve never played Magic:The Gathering in my life, so I apologize to any players if the Bosium\Beacon reference is out of context…please don’t beat me.)

Hehh…nice write-up Morbid.
So, is this card game like Pokemon, or what?

It’s been around forever…I remember it most from the early ’90s…you would walk in places and see college age kids sitting at tables playing…IN THE OPEN…instead of the basement where us closet D&D players dwelled.
I’m sure a player may meander in here and correct me, but in a nutshell, I guess it is like any deck-building game…including PokeMon and Yugi-Oh (which I am familiar with because of my kid).
Basically, you construct a deck that you use to fight another opponents deck.

Bellingham is AWESOME. It’s a cross-section of college town meets total obscurity (for those who aren’t aware, it’s right near the Canadian border and is not a particularly big city).
I’m totally not surprised by this at all.

My oldest son used to play this game. Thank God he didn’t turn out like these asshats…..

Now you cannot even MOON people, I would have laughed at their behavior and ignored them….. But in realty i am glad that the mooners did not get in trouble, unfortunately just beat up and that is UNCOOL in my book…..

1st rule of mooning is speed, if your not a great sprinter, you shouldn’t moon

Article updated with more info, including the attacker’s names. Personally, I feel if you don’t want to get your ass kicked, don’t be a drunken idiot.
Not saying I condone beating the fuck out of someone with a baseball bat, but these two guys went into that store drunk and were belligerent. They then mooned the patrons, destroying property in the process. I feel an ass kicking was deserved…just not in the capacity they got.

Oh, btw, if any of you find that at aged 42, I am in a comic book store at 2 a.m. playing Magic: The Gathering with a 19-year-old…please, shoot me.

just as long as no one shoots a 46 yrs old mother who play world of warcraft!
Nice write up morbid, i get such a kick out of your version of the stories.

A-fucking-men.

Ahh my picture didn’t show up. Had a nice mooning pic. Oh well.

Code’s different on the front page, Rockrgrl. To post a pic, it’s < img scr="url" > without the spaces after and before the <>. Give it a try. If it screws up again, I’ll fix it for you.

Someone asked me why people where upset with these nerds handing a couple of drunk assholes a big heaping plate of asskickin’. Thye remarked that usually, people cheer for the underdog, or when the bullied beat the bully, etc.
I asked them if they had seen the movie A Christmas Story…a movie I am sure everyone has seen. More than once. Anyway, the scene with Ralphie when he finally tackles the bully, Scut Farkus, straddles his chest and begin landing blow after blow while a string of curse words flew out of his mouth.
Of course they had seen it. Great scene and exactly what he is talking about…the audience is behind Ralphie and feels Farkus deserves it.
Yeah, I agree, but now imagine had that scene been extended and Ralphie, who the audience is fully behind up to the point his mother pulls him off, instead pulled out a Swiss Army Knife and begin carving his name in Scut’s face before standing up and began throwing bricks at his head.
There is a certain point to where I feel people get what is coming to them before you start delving into excessive force. This would have been a completely different type of story had these two guys not broke a bat over someone’s head.

So…is the bat included in the game or is that in the add-on pack?????
2:47 pm on October 28th, 2008
Morbid…LOVE the Christmas Story referrence…:)

Well put, Morbid. These guys definitely took it too far. When you repeatedly hit someone in the head with a blunt object, that act is conscious and intentional. They won’t land life in prison, but whatever they do get, I’ll have a hard time feeling TOO sorry for them. They chased those young men down and savagely beat them. No one gets off the hook for that – not even super-dorks.

Suuuuuure

Yeah same here Speachless, I’m 48 and play World of Warcraft but I can pretty much gaurantee that no one will be taking a baseball bat to me. My wife plays too, so do our two boys. I have a lvl 70 Dranai Resto Shammy(my namesake Ceronius) and a lvl 70 Human “Tank” Warrior by the name of Killsalott. And various and sundry other toons to low a lvl to mention. We play on the Kahz Modan server.
But I digress, it must be a lonely life for some to be up at 4am in a comic shop playing a fantasy card playing game, especially a 42 yr old.

Hey, I like to see drunk assholes get their asses handed to them as much as the next person, but yeah, this was too far. They were one unlucky blow from being murderers here.

Here are some more details on this. Not sure how long this link will hold out as it is the local newspaper.
Thats a pretty good description of Bellingham Athena. I know this place well.

Ceronius, you would be damn near god status to my kids, who are in awe of anyone with a level 70. Hehe they are slowing working their way up. I think they use druids (sp?) and are around level 40-ish.
10:16 am on October 29th, 2008
I can’t get over the fact that they broke the window with their asses. That’s some hard-core mooning.
3:33 pm on October 29th, 2008
Oh I sooooo could shoot ALL W.o.W. players some days! I HATE that game with a purple passion. So many times I’ve prayed that Blizzard would become infested with a horrible virus that wiped out every single character and all that goes with them!
I need to stop now or this will go on forever! lol
As for the story… what they did was not worth what they got.

Nerdgamer admission: having spent many hours at a certain point in life playing Magic, I just have to say that IMO it’s just not that fun of a game.
5:00 pm on October 29th, 2008
WOW all they did was moon the guys,,geesh i hate to see if they would of flashed their dicks lol anyway these guys did not desrve to get beat with a bat,,my favorite saying is true to these numbnutts,,(HATE THE GAME,NOT THE PLAYER)
5:52 pm on October 29th, 2008
when you are in the loading screen of a toon in WOW, you get to read some tips. The one that makes sense to me is:
take everything in moderation….even world of warcraft.
Apparently those guys took bats…and not in moderation.
Zibarro i used to get so frustrated with my son playing Diablo…then when WOW came out i figured…if i cant beat him, i am going to join him.
Been playing wow for 4 yrs, have 5 lvl 70s (Ciccibean the resto shammy, Pericolosa the fire mage, Gotyourback the holy priest, etc etc). I play with my husband, and my son. We are pulling my son’s fiance into it too! IF taken in moderation it can be a great passtime.
Gonna come and play with you Ceronious!
Back to those guys that got beat up…what the hell did they have stuck to their asses? Diamonds? How in hell did they break the glass? Too many tacos?

Must be an EQ player…
Clearly you weren’t chemically altered enough.
Well, that would have been preferable, really. They wouldn’t have broken the window and antagonized the gamers enough to actually get up, rather than just make small penis jokes and keep playing. Everyone’s skulls would be intact, and no one would be looking at criminal charges. Way to make a sex offense sound like a better choice!

Not hardly. I’m not a player of any MMORPG game.
I have no use for a computer game you can’t just get up and walk away from.
As for the “If you can’t beat them, join them” mentality? It’s an insane concept for anything… not just this game.

THAT’S funny!
