Hyrum Long & Susan Johnson Hammered Molly

Hyrum Long and Susan Johnson

Forest Grove, OR – To father and daughter Hyrum Long, 75, and Susan Johnson, 49, “euthanasia” means “bury your dog up to her neck in the yard, then hit her in the head with a hammer, leave her there and go out to dinner.”   At least, that’s what they did last FridayFriday reviewsFriday reviews in an attempt to kill their yellow labrador retriever, Molly, who Long and Johnson said was thirteen years old and chronically ill.

Molly didn’t die – at least, not right at first.  Long and Johnson dug a hole and buried Molly up to her neck in the yard in what they later said was an attempt to keep blood from getting everywhere.  They then put a pillow under their dog’s head and hit her repeatedly in the head with a hammer.  Then Long and Johnson piled a log over Molly’s face and went out to dinner.

Yeah, you read it right.  They buried and bludgeoned their “beloved” pet, then went to dinner.  Could you eat?  Well, neither could I, but I wouldn’t be hammering my dog, either.

Neighbors heard Molly’s cries of pain a short time later and went into the yard, where they moved the log off Molly’s head and called 911.  Police arrived to find Molly alive but gravely injured. Officers dug Molly out of her grave and called Animal Control to get the dog to the Humane Society for treatment.

Humane Society spokesperson Barbara Baugnon told the press that Molly “couldn’t lift her head but her eyes were following people around the room, obviously she was suffering. It’s one of the worst cases Ive ever heard of.” Molly also had a chronic skin condition and was malnourished, having not eaten for at least four or five days.

Molly had to be humanely euthanized at the shelter, as her injuries were too extensive and she was in terrible pain.  Personnel reportedly cried as they gently injected Molly with the medications used to stop her pain and her heart.  Baugnon said that there are places in the Forest Grove area that would have helped Long and Johnson by taking Molly and, if necessary, would have euthanized her painlessly at no charge.

Hyrum Long said that he and Johnson thought Molly might have had cancer.  They didn’t want to watch Molly starve to death, he said, and neither he or Susan Johnson could afford a veterinarian.  Long also said that Johnson was afraid to take Molly to the vet because she was concerned that she might be accused of animal abuse.  And, says Long, he made a mistake.  He’s sorry.

Um, yeah.  Tell that to Molly, Mr. Long.

On Monday evening, Hyrum Long was arrested on a charge of first-degree aggravated animal abuse.  Susan Johnson, 49, was also arrested and is charged with animal neglect. Both offenses are misdemeanors, and Long and Johnson were released from jail without bail.

omg this is sickening,,like i said yesterday i have a animal rescue and right now we are in court with 2 cases,1 a jackass cut the dogs ears off with steak knife to make the dog look meaner, stuck it on the balcony in the heat with flies eating its ears(what was left) that case woke up the city and that dog thankfully is now adopted out to a young couple here and is the Ontario mascot for the humane society,2) case a chinese man(loosely i use that term) beat a 12 week husky to death, said he didnt know we had animal protection laws in Canada,he was a student at University of Windsor and the city wanted him deported, pretty much all the rescues here in Windsor joined together to make sure his visa was taken away so he couldnt run home to China,,we just want him to serve the jail sentence, pay the 10,000.00 fine and then kick his ass out of the country,,i cant get over the horror stories i hear anymore and its really sad

How the hell do you bury and beat you beloved dog in the head? And then go out to dinner? All I would see is her face and blood everytime I closed my eyes.

I am in just enough pissed off mood today to do the same to them. They deserve it.

Why did they not have a problem with this? Because she is a dog? I know alot of dogs who are better and smarter than alot of people……

I wish someone would go Motel Hell on them…..Nothing deserves that, and they will get a slap on the wrist…they should be treated the same way….OMG…words fail me…sick just sick…

RIP Molly and may Hyrum and Susan never know a moments peace for what they did to you, AND never own another animal.

I think this story made me sicker than any other I’ve read on DD. The thing about dogs are they are loyal no matter what, they don’t judge and treat people bad like humans……it’s always so hard to hear stories like this. Whisper I don’t know how you do it, it takes a strong person and I would of either lost it or would of beat the responsible person down. Kinda like I feel like doing now.

OMG we lost our beautiful golden retriever in June of this year to cancer.. We had him from a puppy for 11 years.. For someone to kill thier pet like this is more than disgusting.. We did the humane thing and put him down, crying like babies.. I would really like these two to cry like babies.. Our animal rights laws are way toooo lenient.. They’ll go to court, get a fine, and its over.. Over way too soon for them. They make me sick to my stomach..

They need to make some REAL changes in the animal rights laws.
God…… this story just made me so angry and sick at the same time.

we had our husky 15 yrs and june 14 we had to have her put down due to congestive heart failure, she was our 1st foster we ever had and we kept her,she spent 11 months in vets with broken front legs, broken ribs,1 ear twisted so bad the cartlidge didnt let it stand up anymore ,,she was terrified of papers, hoses, squirt guns, literally had to sedate her on fireworks night(vet gave us them we didnt do it ourselves) for the week before she had to be put down we were in denial,we literally were driving to mcdonalds getting her cheeseburgers and french fries, timbits from donut shop, sitting on floor breaking them into small pieces and feeding her by hand,,because like a sick child anything we could get her to eat we did, finally the day came we knew and i wont lie my husband and i both cried like babies, called our families to come say good bye and then leave to give us a few hours alone with her to say our good byes alone with her our vet was the greatest,we stayed with her while it happened,i have no clue how the hell anyone that supposebly loved that dog for 11 yrs could think its a fair death & a good-bye and to bury the dog up to its neck and smash it with a hammer!fuck isnt that the way your stoned to death in iran and those countries where women cant walk outside with out a male family member or they are stoned!! well i say we bury them up to theyre necks and stone them to death! lets see how they feel about that being a form of euthanasia

I can’t believe this actually happened. And I totally do not understand the type of person who would actually do this to their own pet. It would have been much more humane to just let her die. How can they live with themselves, and have the balls to look at that mugshot camera with defiance and surprise?

My dog is almost 14. I have had her since she was 5 weeks old. She is my best friend and has been, at times, my ONLY friend. I have lain awake at night crying because I know that soon I will have to put her to sleep, since her arthritis will never get better and she is slowly losing that ’spark’ of life. But thanks to these fucking sick assholes, I know I’ll be able to do it when the time comes, and know that I did the right thing because I truly LOVE her.

I would rather kill myself than have my dog suffer one day longer than necessary. To think that these people made their dog suffer so horribly to save themselves a little embarrassment and a few fucking dollars is the NEW reason I will lay awake at night crying.

I live in the area and people are really on fire over this. These people should all have their heads beat in, partially and then left.. we’ll give them a pillow, we’re nice like that.

Then they would be better having you for a neighbor than me. I would’ve taken the hammer away and starting beating them in the head with, so they knew what it felt like.

There are three kinds of crime I can not stand. Not in order: crimes again children, crimes against animals, and crimes against animals. Three sets of living things that can’t really defend themselves. I hate people sometimes. They should be changing laws on animal crimes, they are living being as well, that have feelings. Why should they be any less in abuse crimes?

You listed crimes against animals twice. I assume you meant the elderly?? I agree 100%. Add mentally disabled to that and you’ve completed my list. Any person that can victimize any creature / person that is weaker than them is SICK, SICK, SICK!!!

You know, I can even see the logic in deciding that a good blow to the head might be more humane than a prolonged cancer death. But man, they couldn’t even deliver that properly. Trying to wield a hammer with sufficient deadly force at ground level seems like it’d be awkward. Dumbasses. You think they might have done a better job of insuring the dog was actually dead before wandering off and leaving her to suffer. Worthless fucks.

Oh they had enough money to go to dinner but not take their “beloved pet” to the vet. There will be a special place in hell for these mother fuckers and I hope the dog is there adding gas to the fire. Dumb, ugly fucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Portland, Oregon, about 45 mins from Forest Grove. I read about this story on my local news, and it broke my heart. I understand not having money for a vet, but Portland-Metro area has a LOT of great places that, as the article said, will take your sick doggie and help you out. It’s worthless assholes like this that get me riled up. Hammer? Ridiculous choice. BURYING A DOG UP TO IT’S NECK after whacking it with aforementioned hammer? Absolutely heartless. And the reason they buried Molly? To minimize the amount of blood on their property. Nice going, fuck faces .

Yes, I think this is probably why this upset me so much. You did a good job of putting into words what I had to express with dry heaves and some tears. Molly probably trusted and loved her humans completely, and the fact that they did this to her is beyond appalling.

It really, REALLY upsets me that they didn’t even have a diagnosis for her–they were afraid to take her to the vet because they thought people would accuse them of animal abuse. WTF? Any vet would be able to tell the difference between abuse and illness, and my feeling is that their motives are much more suspicious than they would have us believe.

    Fuckers.

While insensitive, I can see their point. Without owners to manage, the vet can take a few minutes, administer the drugs and move on. With people involved, there’s a much larger time commitment. There’s explaining the procedure and what to expect. Then waiting for people to say their goodbyes, confirming when the pet is dead for them, waiting on some more goodbyes, offering condolences and what not. This could easily eat 30minutes and more of a Dr.s time vs., say, 5. You have to schedule a full office visit for it, and that’s $.

First off, ANY vet that would do that does not have your animal’s best interest at heart….makes you wonder what they actually DO when you aren’t there. I would LOVE to have a “chat” with that vet. Some people just can’t stay with their babies, and I respect that, personally I NEVER leave mine, and my vet welcomes that, I have even helped him hold two of the ones I have had to let go…..they NEVER tack on extra charges….hearing your story made me so mad I am having trouble articulating a response!!

Ummm…NO, not correct, these are our BABIES, just like if you have children, do you want to be charged extra for wanting to be there if YOUR baby is dying?? I think not. In most instances the owner is a calming influence at the time, and actually makes it easier on the vet. Furthermore, never forget, without US vets wouldn’t be in business, so if that have to take a few extra minutes? So Fucking What? After all the money most people pay in caring for their beloved fur babies, it is the LEAST they can do. Thank GOD my vet actually cares about my babies and not just the bottom line!! Also, most vets aren’t money hungry like the one mentioned above, most of them care about animals and the owners. It is a team effort between the vet and owner to keep an animal healthy. I lost my beloved boy in Feb. of this year, he died in my arms on the way to the Vet ER after a long illness. The vet on call happened to be one who subs where we go, she took the time to come in and pronounce him gone, hug us and actually pet him and talk to us for a few minutes and comfort us. She didn’t have to do that, but WE won’t ever forget it, and that my dear, is what REAL medicine is about, not the bottom line, it is about LIVES and saving them or easing them in their passing.

You’re not being charged for being there – your’re being charged for the vet’s time because you’re there. And if you’d ever had any experience with actual babies dying, you’d be aware that real doctors bill you for their time too. And it doesn’t make them bad people.

Sorry, that is incorrect. You pay for the vet or doctor’s time when you are billed for the office visit or procedure. To be charged extra for wanting to be with your dying child is heinous and greedy and yes, it DOES make them bad people. ANY doctor or vet worth anything would never charge extra for a parent wanting to be with their baby, and yes hon, I have actual experience with actual babies dying. MINE died in FEBRUARY of this year in my arms and just cause he had four legs instead of two doesn’t make him any less my child.
