Fort Carson officials knew who Marko was; his unit had the highest casualties of any Ft. Carson unit in Iraq in 2007.   Marko was due in October for further psych testing, the kind reserved for soldiers not faring well emotionally after a war tour.
He returned in February. How many tests does it take to figure out he’s a psycho? Jeez.
Marko may not have been fit for duty in the first place, but it certainly appears that his problems only got worse after he came home.
Yeah. This is a really good article because it raises (Imp raises) important questions about how war brutalizes those who wage it. That fact is usually a crucial issue for pacifists of various kinds–looking into the maelstrom makes you into the maelstrom, fighting monsters can make you into a monster, etc. Obviously, if you are killing people you run the risk of becoming not only desensitized to it but getting off on it, becoming monstrous. (That’s also why some people are against the death penalty–they just feel more brutality makes more brutality.)
It doesn’t help that the army makes training exercise video games, so that once people really are off killing people it sometimes seems nothing more than a game. Good way to instill sociopathy. That was something Michael Moore did well in his “Columbine” film–I recall an interview of one soldier who was speaking about that w/out any irony at all. He was like, “yeah, we roll along in our tanks with our headphones blaring music and it’s just like a video game.” Scary.
Given all this, it’s not hard to see that people like this asshole who are sick fucks to begin with are going to be totally drawn to being licensed to kill. Not only does Imp’s good essay suggest that war has adverse effects on those individuals who wage it, but I gotta say—WHY AREN’T THEY DOING MORE SCREENING AND TESTS BEFORE GIVING GUNS AND SHIT TO SOMEONE LIKE THIS DUDE?

It creeps me out that his unit made so many kills, and that so many in his unit have been found to have killed inappropriately. as my other half just said.. there are too many of them.. and they are trained to act that way.. so trying to figure out the depth of their insanity had to be unnerving for these doctors… (he is a marine) he says it takes a few of them to commit suicide for them to really start looking into it.. but i do agree.. they really should keep a closer eye on who they are letting back out into public.. but it does seem impossible… due to the fact that there are 2-3 million army members.. there is a minimum of 140,000 marines… and each va shrink probably has a couple hundred patients…

i am sure if we hadn’t spent so much money on this war as it is.. and our country wasn’t in such terrible financial shape maybe then we could afford enough psychologists to take care of this problem… with that said as it just seems to be this one division.. then there should be a lot more attention paid to the members of it. it is kind of hard to figure out where to place the blame on this one. The war may have messed this guy up, but if he couldn’t handle it.. he shouldn’t have joined up. My other half came back just fine. It also shouldn’t create an excuse for him to do insane things outside of war. That is just appalling. Hell if i thought it was a good excuse id have M go find nick and he could use that as an excuse to eradicate him for good. haha.. no but seriously… I really don’t know where the blame goes here. but I THINK it should go with the guy who did the dirty deed.. and this person here needs to understand that that doesn’t mean the whole division is getting blamed.. hopefully this makes some amount of sense as it is 4:34 am and i am quite tired!

You can verify that it’s her Myspace several ways: by searching for the name “Judi Lawrence” under “People”, her Myspace appears as one of several. The photo on that Myspace clearly bears a strong resemblance to Judi. And if you go through Robert Marko’s comments, boom, there she is. So it’s not just “offered up as hers” – it’s hers. I always do my homework.

I support our soldiers. My brother is an officer currently serving in Iraq. He’s been to Afghanistan. He is my hero. He puts his life on the line every day, and I love and respect him for his service to his nation.
War changes people. The things soldiers have to do to protect themselves and their brothers and sisters in arms are not things we see at home. We hear about the poor Afghani farmers. We don’t see that the farmers are planting land mines. We hear about the children – we don’t see that the children are used as a diversion by their parents, who are willing to shoot through their kids to get to our soldiers.
My brother is not the same man he was when he joined the Army. He’s a stronger man, a smarter man, and overall, a better man. He loves his family and his country. Most soldiers are not Robert Marko. But many Robert Markos want to be soldiers, and the government is letting them.
That, to me, is a problem that puts our good soldiers and our innocent civilians at risk. We don’t need soldiers badly enough to let the Robert Markos of the world join their ranks.

We gave Halliburton (AKA the country Cheney used to be CEO of) a $2.5 billion no-bid contract. Had it been fulfilled correctly, Iraq would be able to export much more oil (and make more friends of certain people even more rich). Instead, the oil fields are barely usable and access to international markets is severely limited. Against the advice of its own experts, Halliburton tried to dig a tunnel through a geological fault zone. “No driller in his right mind would have gone ahead”, said Army geologist Robert Sanders when the military finally sent people to inspect the work.
Halliburton spent all of the $75.7 million allocated to the river crossing, including $100,000 a day while crews sat idle due to broken drill bits and jammed equipment. The US Inspector General estimated the money lost from oil exports at $5 million a day. After Halliburton had spent all the money allocated, the U.S. issued a NEW $66 million job order dedicated to the same task. Lolz.
Blah Blah Blah. Anyway, yes, I didn’t mean to suggest the US hadn’t spent a buttload…on the wrong fucking things. Between that and the tax cuts for the top 2% richest in the US (at a cost of $249 billion), hell yes, we could have afforded psychologists. Anyone who has been through shit like that needs TLC. We also could have afforded proper armor. I mean, soldiers have had to buy their own armored vests. That’s so wrong.

From what I understand of the Halliburton contracts, the more money they squandered in the desert, the more they made, because the US reimbursed them for their expenses and paid them a percentage on top of it.

True, true. Often such dudes like to gangbang hookers together as a way of getting to almost-fuck each other…not incidentally, “sharing” hookers is fairly common pasttime of men in the military. I didn’t say ALL military men, but it IS rather expected (my ex was an ex-Marine and he said the first thing they did when he got to Okinawa was took him to the whorehouse…he was just an 18 year old kid and pretty innocent…he was like “whaaaat?”). Sarabei’s heart was in the right place here, but Porcelain was misunderstood. And maybe someone’s gonna jump on me for this, but the fact is that the “male bonding” aspects of the military are all too often based on a related, sexualized, dehumanizing misogyny…I’m sure this guy was aware of the term “split tail” (synonym for “woman”) and the term “LBFM” (”little brown fucking machine”).
