Area searched for missing woman
 
Following up on new information, Logan County Sheriff Steve Smith and his deputies searched another area in Ione last week for a woman who has been missing for over a year.

Smith said that in the last week or two his office has received some second-hand information that led them to other individuals “who told them what they knew and it led us to a different area,” in a search for Kelli Renee Rice.
The sheriff declined to reveal the nature of the new information, but added, “Hopefully it will lead us in the right direction, but it hasn’t panned out yet.”

The sheriff said last week his office will continue to work any and all tips involving the case, though he is becomming frustrated with the speed of the information he is receiving.

“Anybody with any information needs to come forward,” said Smith. “If we learn later they knew something, there could be charges filed against them.

“It’s our belief that there are more people who know things who don’t want to come forward, but if it was their sister, they would want somebody else to come forward,” he said.

Rice was last seen in the Ione area on Sunday, March 2, 2008. About two months later, Smith contradicted reports that the woman had been found dead and plead with those helping to spread such rumors to cease doing so.

Early in the investigation, a well in the Ione area was drained, but the sheriff insisted then the reason was because of its proximity to the last location Rice was seen.

A man on a four-wheeler reported seeing the woman at approximately 2:30 p.m. on March 2, but said she seemed safe and made no effort to have contact. The witness told investigators it wasn’t unusual to see people walking in the area, Smith said.

A mother of five, Rice was 24 at the time of her disappearance. She has made no contact with her family since March of 2008 and has missed significant dates, including birthdays. Rice’s family, Smith has stated, say that is not typical. Rice’s children, Smith has said, live in the Booneville area and in Missouri.

I just want to say that, Yes, TES has been contacted. I talked to Emily(?) myself several months ago. They are willing to go search for Kelli’s body. LE is not cooperating with that effort. And they must.

We have contacted all of the major and minor local and national TV news outlets with no interest. I have contacted the Booneville paper MANY times with no answer. I have sent letters to the Editor and left comments on their blog. They don’t answer my letters and don’t publish my comments. I’ve also been turned down for buying ad space.

The roadblock for everyone seems to be that the sheriff’s department REFUSES, just flat out refuses, to change Kelli’s status from “Missing At Will” to anything else. They give bullshit stories, theories and excuses. Again, I will publicly state that I think they are afraid that if they change her status they will nearly be admitting to fucking this up from the beginning and covering up because they didn’t find her “worthy” in some fashion.

My personal favorite theory so far, is that the bear, the cougar AND Steve Long were all in kahoots together to cover the carnivorous and heinous actions of said bear and cougar. Long was merely covering their asses.

Kelli IS listed on the NCIC as missing. I had a friend of mine on my local sheriff’s department verify that because I don’t believe a single utterance that comes out of Logan County anymore. She is listed as Missing at Will with a BOLO, Be On the Look Out. Until that changes, it seems that all the people that love and miss Kelli are SOL, as far as help is concerned.

There is no waiting period before a person can be entered into the NCIC Missing Person File. Arkansas law requires all missing persons to be entered immediately.
