page, she couldn’t quite remember how many children she had. Her about me states, “Here i am a mother of 3 yes four great and wonderful little blessings!!!!” Cynthia must have forgotten all about her 4-month-old son Antoine Powell, Jr. when she left him in the care of her 3 other children, aged 9, 5 and 2. Actually, she was just too lazy to care about these little blessings and sadly, she only has three children now. That could be why her status is “bummed.”Â
Cynthia, 30, was arrested on Tuesday on charges of manslaughter, after baby Antoine died of complications from staph infection in April. According to court documents, Cynthia took Antoine to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL in MarchMarch reviews
because she “noticed something wrong.” What was wrong was almost every bone in that child’s body – including arm, legs, and ribs, were fractured.
There are no reports of Cynthia having a job, although her MySpace page lists her career as, “I work wink wink!!!” At first glance, I took this to mean she was hookin’ it on the streets or sold drugs. But oh no, that would mean she’d have to get out of bed. Turns out, Cynthia just liked to sleep, visit with neighbors in her apartment complex, and smoke – about 20 cigarettes a day. According to one neighbor, while she was outside smoking they would often urge her to go inside and take care of her kids. She must not have been worried since, ya know, her kids had it covered.
While she was sleeping, talking, and smoking, she left her other children to care little Antoine. I could be wrong here, but my guess is these other children were neglected by their mother in one way or another as well. So on top of just being kids who don’t have the mental or physical capacity to care for a newborn infant, at least one of the children had “behavioral problems” and had shown a history of violent behavior against another sibling. Anyone shocked? Yeah, didn’t think so.
Her oldest child had even been evaluated after admitting she heard voices telling her to kill her mother. Well, even that wasn’t enough for Cynthia to keep a closer eye on her new baby.
Reportedly, baby Antoine had been dragged around like a doll by the 2-year-old, squeezed so hard that his ribs broke, and repeatedly dropped on the floor when he wouldn’t stop crying by the 5-year-old and 9-year-old. Babysitters have said the children were also just generally “aggressive” and “violent” toward the baby.
Cynthia didn’t take Antoine to the hospital until not one, but TWO babysitters told her the baby was in severe pain and wouldn’t stop crying. One babysitter told investigators Cynthia told her she knew Antoine was in pain, but still did nothing for four days. Who were these babysitters? Were they there to fill in when the kids were at school, sleeping, or watching Dora the Explorer? All reports I’ve found have been vague on the purpose and identity of these babysitters.
The doctors who treated Antoine said his injuries were at least 7 to 10 days old, and an autopsy confirmed blunt force trauma in his little body. Little Antoine suffered for the next month in the hospital. He went into cardiac arrest, slipped in and out of a coma, and eventually died. According to Cynthia’s MySpace blog, she asked her friends and family to pray so they could bring him home so she could ignore him some more.
I want to make it very clear that I lay no blame on these children for what happened, especially given the skank of a mother they were cursed with. There is just no way these children can comprehend how fragile a 4-month-old baby is, especially without supervision from the parents, and ESPECIALLY from a child with major behavioral problems to begin with. I just hope these children do not live the rest of their lives blaming themselves.
All 3 children were placed in separate foster homes. Cynthia is being held on $500,000 bond at Pinellas County Jail.

Clearly Cynthia Calleia can’t handle parenthood, so she shouldn’t be given the opportunity to try it again. Otherwise I envision some poor child undergoing months of torture in her home and being killed, a la Sylvia Likens at the hands of the Baniszewskis.

I swear i want to volunteer to speak on behalf of babies when their parents go to court for killing them. I want to be the one to stand and speak on their behalf. Someone needs to at least bring a face to these victims a voice to them.

These poor babies. How is it that a skank like this can have 4 children and someone like my oldest sister couldn’t even have one? I can never understand how someone who will be a loving caring mother is never blessed with any kids, and these stupid bitches keep popping them out and don’t give a shit about them.

well this women clearly needed mental help as well as her children Im sorry I dont agree with the whole thing about the 9 yr old watching her baby. I was 9 when my mom hjad to go to work and couldnt afford a sitter so I had to stay home with a 5 yr old a 3 yr old and a new born. I took care of them from the 3pm till midnight everynight so my mother could work and I took care of them from the time i was 9 till my baby sister was old enough to watch herself which again was 9. I think 9 yr old are completely capable of taking care of a baby if they r taught to. I took baby sitting classes at 10 which included infant,child and adult cpr. I just think she didnt care what her children did and since she didnt care y should they. Thats all she was teaching them to sit around and do nothing im surprised none of them starved to death as well.

Seems she didn’t want to work unless that entailed laying on her back. However, she needed a sitter for when she was sleeping and socializing and probably all day long while she was in their presence. The older children didn’t have these anger issues just from being ignored. Probably goes much deeper.
These poor babies. I pray they get the help they need to get through this and are placed with loving families who can help heal their scars.

I went through years of fertility treatments and always said I’d never wish infertility on anyone – I have now changed my mind. Never say never.

Selenabelle, I think you are an exception and your Mom did a great job teaching you responsibilty at such a young age. Most 9 year olds are not mature enough to handle so much.

We have to get a license if we want to marry, drive, open a business, but not for having kids? I know, I know, a lot of people would say that we should not have such laws, but look at this mom and the others that we have been reading about on a DAY TO DAY BASIS!!!
If someone evaluates some of these poor excuses for human beings, perhaps some of these monstrosities wouldn’t occur. I just can’t continue to see and read about “parents” killing babies! I just can’t sleep at night with out asking myself how many innocent children are hurting as my own children lay asleep and safe in their beds! I almost feel guilty for having my kids safe!

I hate to say it but the chances that at least the eldest of the children will blame herself/himself for the death of the baby is pretty high. I worked for 7 years in a psychiatric facility for children and we had one client who was 4 years old and his mom put him and his sister (~6 months old) in the bathtub and then walked away. Well long story short, the baby girl drowned in the tub and that poor little boy blamed himself. Do you know what it’s like to hear a 7-year-old talk about his numerous suicide attempts?!
Horrible situation. Poor family. I hope these children have all been permanently removed from this woman’s care and stay out the home regardless of the outcome of the trial.

Hey guys.. im back.. this one pissed me off.. not only is the mother a stupid retarded bitch… but all of her kids now have to live with her thoughtless actions.. forever!!!!!….heres a question.. not taking blame or fault away from the mother.. but do u think the health care system in the USofA has anything to do with the copius amounts of parents not taking their kiddos to the hospital.. as some of u know im a Canadian and I know little about the american health system, but what I do know is it is very very costly for the average citizen….I know she neglected the kids and so on but have u ever wondered if some parents stupid as they are put the money before their children? It just seems the lower class, shitty ass parents or not, kind of get neglected down there. Me being Canadian have it pretty good with regards to healthcare..me and my husband have 100% coverage for basically anything!..especially since both of us are in the military…kk so ya any thoughts on that folks?

But I have to say, that this story is not the result of our Health Care system. This is sadly the result of an uncaring, evil, selfish BITCH, that happened to have working ovaries and cervix!
I would sell my ass if I had to, just to get the help for my children. She wasn’t feeding them, caring for their well being like mothers do. Like I do each and every waking moment of my life! Like MOTHERS should. Anyone tries to touch my children in any way, I will burn you alive! This piece of shit woman was more concerned with visiting neighbors, smoking, and God only knows what else. I think what im trying to say is.. out of all the situations including this one.. is..it a coincedence that they are taken to the hospital eventually but not right away…do u think that money is sometimes more important to “some” parents then the own well being of their children? Glad to see you back Panther! In most states ER’s are not allowed to turn away patients due to financial issuses. I have never been asked to pay, provide insurance info or give collateral before being treated in the ER. In most states as long as you make a paymant every month (even as little as $5) the hospital can not report you to the collection agency. These parents just use that excuse because they think people will relate. Besides, she had money for cigaretts.

It was very difficult reading about this poor babies injuries and suffering he endured. It appears he fought hard to live but just had too many serious injuries to make it. I blame this pieceofshit, low-life mother. I took a look at her myspace…it was so sad. The pictures of baby Antoine are haunting. She had these adorable children that she treated like broken toys…a very self-absorbed, uncaring bitch. I hope that she will be haunted by the memories and photos of her children for an eternity.
I hope you read this Cynthia. You failed baby Antoine. He is dead because of you.

Hmm never heard of it but i will check into it when I get up tomorrow. I would love to do something to help give these kids a real voice. I got touched a lot with a case here in Baltimore where the Mom gave the kid the methadone. Being a recovering addict and having lived that life ages ago in the same area as she lived in I kept thinking there but for the Grace of God goes I. When reading the case follow up though and they stated No one stood up to speak on behalf of the dead baby it just tore me apart Than to find out that POS “Mom” is not even going to really do time Well it just makes me SICK and every case after it this one and Caylee and all the others listed are overwhelming No one ever stands up and says Shit on behalf of these poor kids. Relatives come here bytching and moaning about how we talk about the Mom’s and Dad’s yet few ever mention the victims like they are nothing. GRRR

Okay, I know that we are not talking politics on this thread, but for the record, English is not the official language of the United States, because there IS no official language for the United States. English is considered the national language. Wikipedia’s entry on the United States has links to the definitions of official and national language. Enough said about this.

Or at least use some fricken’ birth control. I’ve never wanted to have children…and I managed to shag my way to middle age without ever getting pregnant–including through all my starving college student years, when I ate a lot of ramen but still managed to find the money for birth control (probably because I made my boyfriend pay half, as it seemed only fair). Birth control is pretty damn effective if you’re using it properly, and pretty cheap and widely available through subsidized programs. But then…Planned Parenthood and other sources have had their budgets slashed to the bone…and we’re clearly not talking about a mental giant who might be able to read the instructions on the box here…so maybe infertile would be the best way to go.
Evcmanso, you can find information on becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate here: http://www.nationalcasa.org/ [warning: automatically boots up a video with the annoying Dr. Phil and his equally annoying wife.] You can also try just doing a google search for CASA + the name of the county you live in. ["CASA Montgomery County," for example.] I’ve been looking into becoming a CASA volunteer myself–there’s a fair amount of training involved (30 class/training hours, court observations, etc.), and they’re interested primarily in volunteers who are able to sort of detach and leave their emotions at the door (much like police officers and social workers have to do just to survive, I would imagine). Just a heads’ up for if you do decide to go through the application process and background check–you don’t want to get too “oh, the precious babies!” on them, since they want to be sure you can do a rationale and measured assessment of all parties involved. (Which is why I’ve been debating over finishing my application since this summer, since I’m not 100% sure I wouldn’t lead them into some kind of “CASA Volunteer Bludgeons Abusive Parent To Death; lawsuits and CASA Bankruptcy To Follow” headline.)
