Farley Allen Rhodes Burned Starlena Pratt
September 5, 2008 by impqueen

Allen Rhodes (Myspace) and Starlena Pratt (Myspace)
Charleston, WV - More to the point, he lit her on fire. On August 2, Farley “Allen” Rhodes, 31, doused his girlfriend with an accelerant and set her aflame - to keep her from leaving him.  Which was stupid, because now Starlena Pratt, 28, is gone forever. She died of her burns on September 3, and Allen Rhodes is facing multiple felony charges in connection with the attack.Â
Allen and Star, as they were called, had been together “off and on” since junior high school. They took breaks and dated other people from time to time, but it seemed they always ended up together – and Starlena always ended up on the rough end of the beatdown stick.  Her mother tried to talk to her, and for awhile, it seemed that Star would listen. But in the end, she’d always go back to Allen.
Allen’s Myspace is pretty telling. In it, his profile says “I’m an easygoing person until you piss me off. Apparently Allen Rhodes has a little gift for understatement.
On the night of August 2, 2008, Starlena and Allen went out with Starlena’s ex-boyfriend David Stevens. By night’s end, Starlena decided she was leaving Allen Rhodes for good. She went into the apartment she shared with Rhodes to get her stuff.
Stevens says he told her not to go inside, saying that Rhodes wouldn’t let her go so easily. He begged her to just come on and leave, he said. But Starlena wanted her stuff and she wanted to tell Rhodes he could go to hell and warm his toes, and she walked into the apartment.
When she walked back out, she was on fire.
With third degree burns over almost half of her body, Starlena sustained lung damage when she inhaled as the flames licked at her arms and chest. Stevens himself was burned trying to extinguish the flames, but wouldn’t get medical attention for his own burns. Instead, once the ambulance had arrived and taken Starlena to the hospital, David Stevens went to see Starlena’s mother, Marcia Chandler, to tell her what had happened.
A friend of the family found Stevens sobbing on Chandler’s front porch.
After spending a month in the hospital, Starlena Pratt had undergone surgery to try to save her arms. It didn’t work. The damage to her lungs wasn’t healing. Starlena wasn’t regaining consciousness, and she was taken off the ventilator, and then put back on it. Finally, on Wednesday, Marcia Chandler kissed her daughter goodbye and gently had the life support measures withdrawn.
Farley Allen Rhodes remains in the South Central Regional Jail in Charleston, where he is now charged with murder in addition to the assault charges for which he was already in custody. Rhodes is being held without bond.

What a horrible way to go! To Starlena’s family, I am so sorry for your loss!

RIP Starlena…ROT in hell Allen Rhodes. I wish Starlena’s family peace.

What about David Stevens, the ex-boyfriend. It sure sounds like he’s not the brightest guy around. He could of at LEAST called 911 A.S.A.P. and accompanied her to the hospital. He’s not guilty of the heinous crime, but he is guilty of missing some brain cells.
12:30 pm on September 5th, 2008
See, now I was proud of him! He warned her not to go into the apt, he tried his best to put the flames on her out (burning himself in the process), and he thought first of her mother, before seeing to his own medical needs. I thought to myself, “He sounds like a real stand up guy.”
Funny we read it so differently.

Maybe I’m missing something, but what’s your major malfunction with David Stephens? How do you know he’s not the one who called the ambulance? Instead of seeking treatment for himself, he went to let Starlena’s family know what happened so they could be with her. Seriously, call me retarded, but I don’t get why you’re angry at him.
12:46 pm on September 5th, 2008
Oh good. You saw it that way too, Ruby. Does this mean I’m not retarded? I thought I was getting soft.

I completely agree. I can’t see putting down a man that could do such a brave and selfless thing.
1:25 pm on September 5th, 2008
It seems he did everything possible, given the nightmarish circumstances. Even if some fault could be found in his reaction (trying to extinguish flames takes priority over the call to 911, in my opinion), just how clearly is a person expected to think when a person they love (even as a friend) is was on fire in front of them? Just the fact that she was covered with a flammable liquid means that David put his own life in significant danger trying to extinguish the flames. He’s a-okay in my book.

Athena, you make very good sense, I agree with you 100 percent
2:57 pm on September 5th, 2008
Amen. I agree.
3:48 pm on September 5th, 2008
I felt the same as you folks. I felt especially bad for him when it mentioned he was sobbing on the porch. I imagine that horrific scene will be played over and over in his mind. I imagine he is asking himself what else he could have done?

Ruby, simply put, your level of intelligence assisted you in actual reading comprehension.
PMS- you read into what you read—Don’t make assumptions, draw conclusions or not think when you read something….did it mention in the article that he didn’t call 911? NO. By making assumptions, drawing conclusions and enforcing your own facts- you just create confusion, evade the actual truth of the story-and in general piss people off…..just saying….
David did more than most would have…it appears.

Or he will beat himself up forever over whether he tried hard enough to stop her from going in…whether he should have just forced her to leave….Two major victims in this case….not to mention family members too.

Somebody needs to douse this guy in lighter fluid and set him on fire. One body part at a time.

My heartfelt sympathies to the family. What a tragic ending to such a young life. Starlena was loved by family and friends and for that she will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace Starlena.

Komak, go easy on PMS. She’s not usually one to jump to wild conclusions, so I’m eager to see if she comes back and explains what she was thinking!
10:53 pm on September 5th, 2008
gee, next time I see someone on fire I’ll be sure not to help them and call 911 instead. God knows the flames may consume more while waiting for help to arrive but the bf is such a jerk for trying to help her and not call 911

I haven’t been on here in some time due to personal life issues. I am glad to be back and have been slowly catching up with everything. I first got on this site when the case of TJ Mullis was going on.
I am glad to be back and look forward to reading up on what I have missed.
Just have a little something to start my return with.
This is for pms.247
If you have ever encountered a accident or an injury this severe with someone you know. Your first instincts are not to call 911 right away. Your brain doesn’t always react as fast as you wish it would. Sad to say but it is true and I am sure many here will agree with me on that.
The guy acted accordingly as most people would have done under the circumstances. Trying to help by putting the fire out. How is he at fault?
Most first reactions are not the right ones and you can’t be held responsible for those.
My Grandmother had a headache and went to rest. My sister went in to check on her 15 min later. She was not breathing or moving. So my sister checked for a pulse nothing was there. She ran to the neighbors and called the closest relative. Then called 911.
Even the police stated that many’s first reactions are not to call 911, you are usually in shock or traumatized by what has happened. It happens on several occasions.
Doesn’t mean they are stupid for not dialing 911 first.
Some people really are asshats. pms.247

The article doesn’t convey clearly that he “wouldn’t get medical attention” FOR HIMSELF.
I think PMS read the story and thought “wouldn’t get medical attention” meant the guy wouldn’t call for medical help for Star.
It is written so that either interpretation is possible.

This story is a warning to all those women and men who want a final, triumphant good-bye scene to end their bad relationships. If there’s something you have to have from the apartment, hire a professional guard to go in with you. If it’s not worth the expense of having real professional security by your side, whatever is in the apt isn’t worth going after.
Just get away with your most precious possessions, your health and your life.
Poor Star. What a hideous way to go.
11:09 am on September 6th, 2008
Point taken. Although it read clearly to me, on re-reading I chose to edit that sentence to clarify that Stevens would not seek attention for his own burns. Thanks for the heads-up.
11:26 am on September 6th, 2008
What an awful, awful way to go.
6:01 am on September 7th, 2008
OK, now that we’ve cleared that up, can we move on to the shaming? Farley “Allen” Rhodes, you are an asshole, and a pussy. Oh, and you look like a bird — and I hate birds.
9:36 am on September 7th, 2008
I look at his mugshot and the only word that comes to mind is “snivelling”.
2:29 pm on September 7th, 2008
Allen, since you like fire so much, I hope you enjoy your own ass getting lit up. Cause where you’re going, I only got 4 words for you “Fire In The Hole!”

I know this is superficial and quite beside the point, but this guy is REALLY, REALLY UGLY.
