Young, two kids, partying, trailer, it does all fit…….Probably she was raised in the same situation/reality. I am sure we all have seen it, read about it, or heard about it.

No excuses, she fucked up big time……and hopefully her kids will move on to a better life……..

That said, those last few posts are way too angry….Check out the mother who sucked on her son’s stuff (story on FP) post that anger there….. I agree, she left them there intentionally, not even forgot them….

ok… no offense cheekysweetie… but i traveled every two weeks from el paso to tyler texas. that trip is 12 1/2 hours one way… pretty much non-stop. i traveled at night so the little ones could sleep. it was often just me and my (1 & 4 yr old girls). i worked a 10 hr day… picked up the kids and hit the road… i was in my late 20’s. i never had a ‘collision’ smart enough to pull over in a safe area… and ooopppee i have to say it… i never ever ‘forgot’ my kids…. damn… i missed the classes these ADULTS took on being SO FUCK’N TIRED YOU’D FORGET BABIES IN HUGE ASS SEATS IN THE BACK. i’ve read many of your post and you seem like a wonderful person who looks for the absolute best in everyone and the hope that these people are part of a tragedy and not the writers of it… my hats off to you… but when you’ve been around the block with age and you’ve worked in ANY type of field were you deal with people and their care for their children…. sometimes life just doesn’t make you so optimistic on incidents like these… no offense towards you at all!

Anyway, thank you for the kindness in your comment. But I do work in a child abuse prevention program working directly with at-risk families that have been reported for maltreatment, and I’m no anywhere close to wet behind the ears. What I do believe, is that sometimes there are reasons for people’s bad behavior. And I am trained to focus on those reasons, because addressing those reasons are the only hope for changing the behavior. Sometimes it is a simple as the person is just plain bad, and there truly is no hope for change. But more often there is a glimmer of good inside that can be built upon. So I guess you are right, I do tend to see the possibility of something better. Hope is something I can’t survive without, and I have been blessed many times to see my own hope inspire others to become better parents. It takes all kinds, those like me who hope for change, and those like you who see clearly when hope is futile, to strike the balance necessary for this field.

to clarify it sounds like the husband wasn’t out with her. After she left the party, she stopped by her mothers to pick up the boys… so grandma was only babysitting.

Mendoza said she left her sleeping children in the truck because she only planned to go inside for a shot time. Instead she talked to her husband and fell asleep.

Eight hours later, she woke up and up and realized her children were still strapped in their car seats in the truck.

Police said she admitted that she’d had “a little” alcohol.

“She did tell us that she drank that evening, but at 5 o’clock in the morning, we don’t know how strong it may have been or how much was still in her system,” said Lynn Munford with the Rosenberg Police Department.

An 11 News crew saw two strollers surrounded by beer and a few half-empty bottles of liquor in the bed of the family’s pickup truck.

Another neighbor called 911 while Sierra performed CPR on the 2-year-old. She said he wasn’t breathing when she found him.

“I was trying to give him some air….give him CPR. He was trying to close his eyes, but I was trying to keep him up,” said Sierra. “That’s when the police and ambulance arrived.”

The boys survived and as of Wednesday were still in the hospital. The oldest boy is in critical condition.

Sierra said the children’s mother, 20-year-old Sandra Mendoza, tried to get help by knocking on the neighbor’s door and spraying the children down with water.

“She kept saying, ‘my babies, my babies,’” said Sierra.

Sierra lives a few trailers over from Mendoza and has two children of her own.

“Seeing the two babies laying on the ground like that was the scariest thing in the world,” said a tearful Sierra. “I didn’t sleep all last night, I was so worried. It’s so terrible. It’s just so terrible.”

Good lookin’ out, Kathy. As if the assumptions I was making didn’t already get me in trouble…I really didn’t want to have to resort to, “Just look at those earrings! She’s clearly a hood rat, which is why I doubt she was sober.” :p

As for the comment about one or both of them not being sober, yes, it’s an assumption, which is why I qualified the hell out of it. It’s possible that they had a perfectly reasonable excuse for getting home at 5am but, again, it’s not that likely, in my opinion.

I lived in Richmond – Rosenberg for about 4 years. Women like Mendoza are a dime a dozen there. They become mothers way too early in life and marry (before or after the babies) very early too. Its just what they do because they really don’t see that they have other options.
