Troy Edwards and Jathiya Wooden

Norfolk, VA - When I was a kid, I liked to play hide and seek.  And apparently Jathiya Wooden and her boyfriend, Troy Edwards, like to play hide and seek too.  In this case, they hid Jathiya’s four-year-old daughter Tamera Wooden and forgot to seek her.  For a really, really long time.

On Sunday, Wooden inexplicably remembered that Tamera was missing, or so her story goes.  She called police at about 3:00 p.m. Some reports say that her ex, Tamera’s father, made the call, but most of the things I’ve seen indicate that Jathiya Wooden did the dialing.  She told police that her four year daughter was missing.  But when Wooden wasn’t able to give police a straight timeline, they searched her house – and lo and behold, there was little Tamera.  And Tamera was not just hiding quietly – she was dead.

I know, I’m so surprised.  Are you surprised?  Dead preschooler shocker in Norfolk, yeah?

On Monday, Wooden and Edwards, who is not Tamera’s daddy, were arrested on suspicion of child neglect. Probably that was because little Tamera was emaciated and appeared to have starved to death.  Sure enough, by Monday the medical examiner ruled Tamera Wooden’s death was caused by starvation and dehydration.   But the medical examiner didn’t think it was accidental month-long hide and seek, and ruled little Tamera’s death a homicide.

Okay, what is the deal with people starving the kids all of a sudden?   Was August Forget To Feed The Babies Month and nobody told me?  Sheez.

Both Troy Allen Edwards, 29, and Jathiya Wooden, 26, are being held at the Norfolk City Jail without bail.  They are charged with murder and felony child neglect and are expected back in court for preliminary hearings in NovemberNovember reviewsNovember reviews.  I sure hope they didn’t forget anyone else in that apartment, because they won’t be back there for awhile.

LizardLizard reviewsLizard reviews is talking about this case in our forums – thanks!

WTF…they actually tried to claim that they forgot she was “missing”??? Please. They probably abused her and withheld food as a form of punishment, and she starved to death, a la Chandler Grafner. Stupid sacks of shit.

Poor little girl…what a horrible way to die. :(

running hiding you would notice sluggishness in your child if they were that far gone from starvation and dehydration.

Was the biological father trying to visit with her and that is when she came up missing ?

Mom couldn’t find her and called daddy to see if he had her ?

Appox. how many hours has she been passed when they found her ?

People aren’t too bright. Even Casey’s nanny-turned-abductor story was better than this one. I just can’t wrap my mind around these people who can cause the prolonged suffering of a child.

Years and years ago, I had a dream that a group of my friends and I forgot about a baby in our general care and it turned up dead, Trainspotting style. I woke up so absolutely panicked and terrified, that the dream is burned into my memory, like it happened last week. If a dream can evoke such an unsettled reaction from me, who has no kids…I can’t even imagine how someone could do that to their own child.

Damn. I feel guilty if I forget snacks for a long road trip.

I’ve been a long time fan of this site, but this is my first time posting. The starvation articles are getting to me. How hard is it to feel your kids? I hate cooking, and resent every meal I have to make, but you know what? I love my kids enough to go to the effort to provide 3 squares a day. And my four year old acts as though he’s starving if he hasn’t eaten in the last half hour. I can’t even begin to image what a truly starving child sounds like. Just breaks my heart. I say let the fuckers starve in jail.

Just an edit to my previous post. I meant “feed” your kids, not “feel” your kids. We already have too many people doing that already.

    My feeling exactly….pieceofshit*MF*

I have a friend who works in a law-enforcement…she says September is the busiest month of the year. They get all the calls/reports regarding child horror stories from child abuse to gone missing. With school out September is always so ugly after long months of summer break.

    Rest in peace little Tamera.

So it takes all summer for these events to make their way to the police. That gives another cast to summer, doesn’t it? Not freedom-from-school time or playing-all-day time, but at-the-mercy-of-adults time. How sad, very, very sad.

My kids have 3 meals and at least 3 snacks a day. If I’m late with snack they’re so fussy I can hardly stand it! Why would not feeding them even seem like a good option? These people like to hear their kids cry and fuss? Looks like the “parents” haven’t missed a meal. I just don’t get it.

Considering you describe how shocked you are, I’m guessing you never would’ve guessed something like this might be going on in her home.

It’s so unfathomable, to think that someone you know (hell, that someone you don’t know) can starve a child. I’m sorry, badlucklove, this must be pretty tough on you.

hi badluck & welcome to DD

I am so very sorry for what you must be going through… once trust is lost you will question in your heart everyone you come across in the future. Takes a long long time to really know someone.

would you happen to be able to shead some light on this ?’s

Sad, tamera never had a normal early childhood. She would always get beat by her mother for every single thing. She was a sweet little girl. Social services had been called twice that Tamera was being mistreated but they ignored it. Jathiya has had over 8 children I’ve heard. I hope Jathiya and Troy get the shit beat out of them each day and get life in prison.

Oh, how sad. Eight children had to endure this woman’s “mothering.” I agree in your hope that these two never step outside a prison again.

I am truly sorry for what happen to the little girl but people should not make comments about something they donot know about. The mother was the problem she abuse her child . Troy problem was that he sat back and didnot help because he was not the father of the child. He had 2 kids by a girl and he didnot abuse them at all. He help one young lady raise he kids and he never touch them because they were not his. He had a baby with this women who was a former co worker who was about 4 months old and that child was o.k. This girl had issues. She knew that he was a good man however she tried to tell to make the story up with her thinking if something happen that possible he would get blame. He also is a little slow as well but never ever who he hurt anybody kid. He really didnot realize how bad this girl was treated her daughted by another man. The girl left her brand new baby with Troy for 2 months after he was born and that baby was o.k. But the father of the 4 years old had already made sure that Troy would never put his hands on her. He never did but the mother was in the wrong about what she did to that little girl. They should have put her on trail first. She used to work with Troy on his job. He worked on the same job for 8 years with no problems. H e had many family and friends who trusted them with their kids. This girl was a problem. She needs help. This is the honest truth. He never touch the little girl at all. He just never helped the girl when the mothers was abusing her.
