She'll serve more than 19 years in prison for the brutal beating and murder of a 19-month-old boy. On Wednesday afternoon, a Sedgwick County judge sentenced Heidi Dieball the maximum penalty allowed for her crimes.

Dieball did not speak in court during her sentencing hearing. She pleaded guilty to beating her roommate's son, Andrew Haga, three times in one night while she was babysitting him last January. Prosecuotrs say Dieball was angry over having to care for the boy. She originally told police the boy died after falling off the couch.

Andrew Haga's family members and two close family friends spoke to Dieball before the judge handed down his sentence.

Athena Haga, Andrew's mother, cried for much of the hearing and needed a family member by her side as she spoke to the judge. Haga carried a written statement to the podium with her, but as she stood less than ten feet away from her son's killer, she crumpled the paper in her hands. She then said the same words she told Eyewitness News 10 months ago when Andrew died.

"I just want to know why," Haga cried.

"I kiss an urn good night," she later told the judge. "An urn!"

Haga allowed prosecutors to make a plea deal with Dieball for second degree murder as long as she admitted she killed the boy on purpose. Dieball's original charge, first degree felony murder, means the defendant killed the victim as a result of other crimes, but not intentionally.

"I did not want her to be able to walk around anywhere and say, 'Oh, this was an accident. I never meant for this to happen,'" Haga said after the hearing. "You don't do what she did without meaning for that to happen."

When asked after the hearing about her first chance at talking to Dieball since her son's death, Athena Haga simply referred to her first words in court saying, "I wish she could have answered my question."

The judge sentenced Dieball to a total of 233 months in prison for second degree murder and two counts of child abuse.

A Sedgwick County Judge has sentenced a Heidi Dieball to the maximum penalty. Dieball pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder and Child Abuse in the death of 19-month-old Andrew Haga.

The sentence amounts 233 months; 165 months for the Second Degree Murder and 34 months of reach of the Child Abuse charges. Those sentences are to run consecutively.

Before the sentence was handed down, the court heard victim impact statements from Haga's mother, a woman representing his father and his great grandmother.

Haga's mother, Athena started her comments with, "I just want to know why."

Andrew Haga's great grandmother spoke first for the family, she told Dieball, "You can never imagine the hurt you extended by brutally murdering our little Andrew."

Prosecutor Kevin O'Connor asked the judge for the maximum sentence, describing Haga's death as horrible.

Heidi Dieball told the judge she didn't have anything to say to the court.

Well since all of you like to speculate at what happened, why don't you get the truth straight from the source? Yes, I am Athena Haga, Andrew's mother. I've been a bartender since I turned 21 and had been enjoying working 2 days a week, paying my bills and having so much more time to spend with my son. No, I was not with his father during my pregnancy or through his life, I was with another man who loved Andrew dearly as if he were his own. But when the place I was employed at terminated a few people, I was called in more and more to work. I ended up working 7 days a week straight. My boyfriend and I split because I was working too much. This was just a few days before christmas. so I moved from the house we were buying and planning on building our life together in. Heidi and I had met through a friend of mine many months proir. She also babysat for said friend and her own sister as well. Yes, the agreement was that i would pay all of the bills, rent and buy food as long as she watched Andrew during work hours. The night that my son was beaten and murdered, I had come home from work planning on quitting the next day after being sexually harrassed by my boss. I told the owner I would meet him at work at 8 AM. A friend had offered to take me out for a game or two of pool to get my mind off of things. I was planning on calling my ex to sit for me, but since I paid him $60 for the last time he watched Andrew, Heidi told me not to worry about it, that she would love to watch him. I was to stay at my friend's for the evening, go to work, quit and start job hunting that monday. NEVER before has she been even slightly mean to any child I had ever seen her interact with. I agreed to the plea agreement with the district attorney so that she would have to admit that she meant to harm and murder my son. I did not want her to walk around able to say that she never meant for it to happen. Don't like my decision? Too bad, it was mine to make, not yours. She was sentenced to over 19 years on Wednesday, November 19th. And while it may seem like just a short time to you, the other sentence she would have recieved for felony murder (the actual original charge) was 20 years...so a few months I was willing to give as long as she was forced to admit the truth... to everyone, herself included. As for my myspace page.... it was the last thing I did with my son... sat down to watch one of his two favorite shows and enjoy a snack together. I cherish that moment and was loathe to let it go. Yes, my mother died...but that was in high school when I was 15, and while it was ruled a suicide, the gunshot wound was through her stomach, nowhere near her head. Yes, I did just recently have another baby. When my son died, they had to pry his dead body from my arms while I screamed-begged-pleaded and cried for them not to take him from me. I watched them try to revive him several times that night and had to stand by helpless, unable to do the one thing I swore to him I would do... keep him healthy and happy. So that night, I tried to get drunk enough to feel numb, to feel nothing. When all I felt was anger and loss, rather than beating someone's face in that I didn't know, I had a fling instead. As a result, I now have a beautiful baby girl that brings light back into my life. She gives me new hope and a reason to get up in the morning. Any questions? Well stuff 'em, because nobody should have to come across this filth after having thier entire life ripped away from them. I hope that none of you ever have to experience what I went through... I hope that right now, you're holding your children tight, or reading them a bedtime story, or just telling them that you love them. And I sincerely hope that if you should lose your precious gift in such a terrible way, that none of you would be submitted to such vulgar and cruel mockery of the tragedy you suffered, that your grief and the life of your dear one should not be the butt of sickeningly distasteful jokes.

I have known Athena for over 13 years. We went to school together. I also knew Heidi. I didn't know Heidi as well, but I still knew her from school. I think it was just a year that she went to school with us.
Athena was not in rough times, Heidi was. That was why she allowed Heidi to move in with her. Athena's myspace quote status thing had been the eating Bon-bon's one for a LONG time. She has changed it recently. IIRC, Athena knew Heidi for years. No one would have even GUESSED that this was possible.
Yes, I do believe Athena is pregnant again now. As soon as the sentencing is done, Athena is planning on moving away from here. She has suffered enough trama in this town. In middle school, her mother committed suicide in her bedroom. Things went down hill from there. Other things happened that don't need to brought up here, but poor baby Andrew did not deserve this.

Can I ask why if it was intentional murder why did they give her the chance to plead down? I never understand that in cases like these. Are they just fucking lazy to have to the extra mile for that beautiful little boy?

19 years and she'll be out in less than 10. Flippin whore. I hope they put her in GP and everyone knows what she did, maybe she won't make it out......

Wry, I officially love you. I don’t burst out laughing, out of control, very easily. This made me laugh so hard that I had to show it to my husband. (He always enjoys a good meat curtains joke.) He’s a musician and he said he’s going to record the song for you.

Wow! Thanks! I can hardly wait to hear the song. I'll have to contact my labia and tell them a reunion show, at least, may be in the works. Or perhaps a new serious about older, wiser, menopausal labia and their adventures among the floppy penises of their age group.

Athena took this bitch in on Christmas eve of all times! She probably thought she was doing a ‘good deed’, and the grinch shows her appreciation by feeding her baby to the couch?? We can’t even blame Athena, (like so many others on this site), because it wasn’t ’some guy’ she met, it was a girl roommate, not usually a big red flag!! Poor baby, I hope someone in jail slaps the smirk off this girls face!

I still wonder how long Athena had known Heidi and why she thought she would be good child-minding material. Whatever her qualifications for the job she sure wore through the toddler-friendly surface veneer quickly!

“Here they comeWalking down the streetCurtain cutiesMade of meat!Hey, hey, watch ‘em flappingAnd sometimes slapping around! But they’re too busy singing,To put other labia down.”

I didn't have the pleasure of participating in this thread the first time around.

Wry, I officially love you. I don't burst out laughing, out of control, very easily. This made me laugh so hard that I had to show it to my husband. (He always enjoys a good meat curtains joke.) He's a musician and he said he's going to record the song for you.

Wait. What? Heidi had been living there all of a week or so and had ALREADY beaten the baby up twice before the beating that killed him? And she admits that she INTENDED to kill him? What, the baby was a bad roomate who left the cap off the toothpaste or didn't flush the toilet? No, wait a minute, taking care of the baby was the whole reason she was living there rent free! What did she think was going to happen after he was dead? And how long did the baby's mom know Heidi before letting her move in? WTF?
