Oh, and then he’d send video of himself masturbating. Now that’s just inappropriate, kids. Especially for a high school chemistry teacher.
One can only imagine the bemusement and disgust on the face of the task force investigator on the receiving end of Mr. Salvo’s most recent performances. See, Nick Salvo wasn’t really talking to the fourteen-year-old he’d solicited online in recent weeks; he was talking to an agent with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Child Predator Unit.
At one point, Salvo said to a would-be teenager, “Got to see a thick one, didn’t you?” And the answer to that would be yes – just not the “thick one” he meant. This guy has horny for brains. You’d think that a guy smart enough to teach chemistry at Mt. Lebanon High School would have watched Dateline at some point, but nooooo. Apparently Salvo thought he was sexy enough not to get caught. Wrong on both counts, dude.
Mr. Salvo was arrested at his home on Thursday, and agents brought along a search warrant. A computer and some data storage devices were confiscated and have been sent to the Attorney General’s Computer Forensics Unit for analysis.
Nicholas E. Salvo was charged with two counts of unlawful contact with a minor, one count of attempted unlawful contact with a minor and two counts of criminal use of a computer. He was arraigned Thursday night and was ordered held at the Allegheny County Jail on $25,000 bond. Salvo must also undergo a behavioral evaluation as part of the initial court order.

But this dude doesn’t necessarily qualify as a child molestor. He was cruising teen-oriented sites, which is neither legal nor socially acceptable, but it’s not pedophile material.
Incidentally, I remember being a teen and all the weird and sometimes sick shit I’d get sent. I did develop a “good” online friendship with a German man, screen name “ManInFemaleUnderwear”. I’ve encountered my fair share of pervy teachers. When I was a freshman in high school, my teacher made MULTIPLE inappropriate comments to me. One time when my friend and I were giggling over a condom she had in her purse, he walked up and asked, “Do you want me to try that on?” Then he got horrified with what he said and begged us not to tell anyone he’d said it. You know, at the time I knew it was creepy but for whatever reason I didn’t care, so I didn’t say anything to anyone. Guess who got A’s in that class without doing any of the work? Yeah. And then he went on to be the principal of the high school!! I think he still is to this day!! Ugh. If a teacher said something like that to my daughter, I’d cut his nuts off.
Then when I was a junior, my perverted Art teacher tried to feel me up under the table one day in class. He was fired the next year for having an inappropriate relationship with a student and moved out of the state. Last I heard, he was teaching at a private school somewhere. The best part of all is that he was ALWAYS going on and on about what a great Christian he was. Yeah, right, buddy!

A pedophile is someone who is attracted to prepubescent children. Simply liking ‘em young isn’t enough. It’s all about how young.
This dude definitely has self-control issues. But teens are capable of procreation. Children are not. That’s why being attracted to children qualifies as “sick”. But actively pursuing teens when you’re an adult is just in really bad taste (and illegal).

I’m sorry, but unless he goes after prepubescent kids, he’s not a pedophile by psychological classification. He may use similar tactics, but those same tactics are used by anyone looking to manipulate any specific class of people, including the handicapped or elderly. Yes, his behavior was predatory, and I’m not saying he shouldn’t be punished, but pedophiles are defined as being sexually attracted to prepubescent children. High schoolers, even 14 year olds, are very rarely prepubescent.
I understand that law enforcement and society at large tend to use the term “pedophile” to describe anyone engaging in sexual acts with a minor, even if that minor is post-pubescent. I just disagree with it. It doesn’t have to be a big thing.

Morbid, you’re trying to create an argument where there is none. I disagree with the use of the term “pedophile” being used in relation to an individual who is not pursuing prepubescent children. That doesn’t mean I don’t think what this man was doing was terribly inappropriate – it just means that I don’t believe he qualifies as a pedophile from a psychological perspective. I don’t believe that, if he were to be evaluated by a psychological professional, he’d be deemed a pedophile. If he were a middle school or elementary school teacher and he was sending questionable material to children that age, I’d think differently.

I’m a little confused, because I never referred to Salvo as a pedophile in my article or in the tags for same. And none of the first five comments before yours, A., called him a pedophile either. In fact, you were the first person to use the word on this thread.
That said, middle school students are as young as sixth grade (fifth in my community) and many of them do hang out on the teen chat sites. “Any young girls for a hot older man” doesn’t necessarily mean “any girls in ninth grade or older.”
I think he’s an opportunist, and would probably do a ten year old as easily as a fifteen year old. Whoever was in that chat room was fair game for webcam video of him wanking his schlong… he had no way of knowing how young the recipients were. Do I think he’s a pedophile? Oh, probably. More likely he’s a Humbert, but whatever. He still deserves to be slapped. Hard.

You couldn’t possibly be that easily confused.
The phrase used was “child molestor”, which, in my opinion, is practically synonymous with “pedophile” and I felt was equally inaccurate. I equated the two in my initial comment, and the conversation got going from there.
Yes, middle schoolers could be as young as 6th grade. But this guy was a high school teacher, was he not? And he was propositioning high school aged girls, as far as he knew? As far as your statement about opportunity, I’d be interested to see how easily that line can be crossed. If guys who lust after high school girls would just as easily proposition a little kid, pedophilia is FAR more pervasive than I think anyone imagines. To me, there’s a huge difference between pre and post-pubescent. Since his history focused on post-pubescent girls, I find it hard to believe he’s a mere opportunist.
And, Morbid, I’m not sure you understand what I’m saying. What I’m saying is that pedophilia is about the “who”, not the “how”. Yes, he attempted to consort with a certain demographic, and positioned himself among them professionally. These are the tricks of the trade for any predator. People who like to prey on helpless people tend to locate themselves in hospitals or as care-takers. People who like to prey on old folks may take up in retirement homes. But there’s nothing here to suggest he’s attracted to prepubescent children. As a result, I find him being labeled a “child molestor” (or pedophile) to be inaccurate.

I didn’t call him a “child molestor” either. Another commenter did, which I suppose is where you decided to equate the comment with calling the guy a pedophile.
But yeah. I hadn’t seen the term “pedophile” in the first several comments or anywhere in my article, so I guess i was just a little confuzzled at why the terminology debate over a term that hadn’t been used since it appeared to be a debate of semantics, and usually you’re a purist in such matters.
But now that you’ve explained it, it makes more sense. To me, a child molestor isn’t necessarily a pedophile, since a child is a legal child until the age of eighteen in most states. That’s why I was confused.

I agree with Imp in regards to Child Molester vs. Pedophile. Pedophile is a medical term and child molester is a legal term and hence more vague depending on regional norms.
