Update 9/30/2008 - Charges against Stephanie Kirkland have been dropped due to insufficient evidence. The decision to drop the charges was made by Aiken County Solicitor Barbara Morgan. More info at end of article.
Aiken, SC - Stephanie Gail Kirkland, 20, enjoys the music of Ashley Tisdale and Usher, hanging out with friends, her kitten, Chipper, and having sex with a thirteen-year-old girl. Stephanie turned herself in to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday after a warrant was issued for her arrest on charges that she sexually assaulted the girl multiple times last year.
The Sheriff’s Office says that Stephanie engaged in lewd sexual contact with the thirteen-year old between May and December of 2007, and that the assaults occurred in multiple locations. Deputies didn’t say why the charges are just now being filed. Details are being withheld, although I have no doubt that some of our readers would pay big bank to see Stephanie reenact the encounters with another girl of legal age.
Stephanie is a tiny little thing - 4′11″ and just about 100 pounds. She looks younger than her stated age. So what’s happened here, really? Is Stephanie a predator who likes the young stuff? Or is there something else going on here behind the scenes? After all, she did turn herself in to deputies. And as of this evening, she’s out of jail on an order of release from the judge in her case. And while charges aren’t generally filed without some evidence, Stephanie looks pretty innocent - on the surface.
Then again, it’s unusual for a young woman to molest a child, but not unheard of. And a thirteen year old cannot give consent in South Carolina. Surely Stephanie knew the girl’s age. If she were a guy, no matter how cute or innocent-looking, we’d be hanging him by his balls. So what do you think? Did she do it, or not?
Stephanie Gail Kirkland is charged with three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and four counts of lewd acts on a minor. Since she’s out of jail now, maybe she’ll come explain to us what really happened. Maybe she did it. Or maybe the young pussy Stephanie likes is just a kitten named Chipper.
Update 9/30/2008 - Barbara is not returning phone calls yet, but Assistant Solicitor Steve Kodman stated that multiple inconsistencies in the victim’s statements was a factor in their decision to drop the charges.
“There are times where law enforcement has enough probable cause to make an arrest, but we have to be able prove it beyond a reasonable doubt to take it to court,” Kodman said.
Officials will not be charging the 13-year-old with any crime as they have stated nothing leads them to suspect the alleged victim lied about what happened. So, there you go.
5-6 years difference is no big deal to adults, but when I was 18-19, I did not hang out with 13-yr-olds. There was a world of difference.

Had this been a case where it was a 20 year old male who impregnanted a 13 year old female regardless if she had consented or not, he wouldve been called every name in the book from skinner to diddler to pedophile..etc.
Sadly, it’s just hard to say in cases like this. Young girls do often lie about these things. My ex’s best friend all his life, had a daughter that was mad at him, and accused him of molesting her… she was a friend of my son. So, she was about 14 or 15. Any time he wouldn’t allow her to do something she wanted to do, she’d use that as a threat! Then finally followed through… he was forced to move out of the home, leave his wife and other children. Anyways, he ended up overdosing and dying.
Then the girl finally said it was a lie…
Only because of seeing this first hand makes me question when a girl suddenly, after time, decides to cry rape..
To clarify, my statements in this thread are in general, and not directly about the two individuals in this story. I have no idea who is telling the truth in this one.
This is surely a good example of kids not being able to make important decisions. I’m sure she had no idea of the hell she would set loose once the system got into action on her accusation. It sounds as if she was a kid grasping at the power available to her, staging a big “There! See!” scene with herself as the triumphant star watching HIM get “bossed around.” I wonder how she handled the guilt afterwards. A very sad story, especially since liars like this make it harder for real victims.
wanted to add, if this is a real case of molestation, they she should be punished the same as a man would. I have a young daughter, and if an older woman messed with her, when she’s 13… I’d kill her!

I have a 13 y/o daughter. First off, I would not be letting her hang out with a 20 y/o. If any man or woman 18 or older is messing with someone 13, that’s illegal.

That is exactly why there are ages of consent defined. A 13 YO is not equipped with the, knowledge, life experience, or understanding of the consequences of their actions to make an informed consent.

I get what you are saying, but a 7 year difference between young adult and just barely a teenager is a huge difference in life experience.
In the cases where the two are within 2-3 years of each other in age and both below 18, I agree with you 100%, no matter what gender. Even if they are within 2-3 years and straddling that age of consent line I can agree with you.
Having said all that, this story is starting to look more and more like a very young girl crying wolf to get back at her probably too old for her girlfriend. If that is the case, it is sad that the older girl will be saddled with a sex offender tag for the rest of her life.
I really wish judges were given latitude in these situations to make that determination and act accordingly.

They are. Most of the time in these “Romeo & Juliet” situations the offender is given probation and/or community service. Also, sometimes they don’t have to register as a sex offender - and if they do it’s only for 1 to 5 years and their record can be expunged after their probation period.
I would still have mixed emotions about the prosecution of the adult whether they were male or female. It is wrong, it is illegal, it is sick and all of those things, but the fact that they both were teenagers at the time makes it less heinous in my book. But 20 & 13, no way. Some how those couple of years make a big difference.
As I said earlier, my experiences and actions at that age affect my outlook. Looking back, my blood boils at the thought of some of the people I hung out with, yet I also take responsibility for my actions and know how I used and manipulated to get what I wanted, as well. Then again, my mindset at that age probably wasn’t typical.
Perhaps making the 13 year old take a mandatory sex ed class, or something, might help deter them. I don’t know. I just don’t like the idea of babying them and removing any of their responsibility just because their consent isn’t legally acknowledged. I’d like to hear your guys’ thoughts on that.
To me a 7 or 8 year old is a child and may know of sex but def. doesn’t understand the actual consequences of having sex. A 13 year old does. They understand more than people want to give them credit for. Like what Pretty says, I am viewing this also from my life experiences and know how I thought and felt at that age. I, again, think this 13 year old has lied and now someone who is probably innocent will be saddled with this the rest of their life. I would LOVE to see the 13 year old prosecuted for something if it is proven to be a lie. Look back, don’t remember the name of the article, about a 13 yo posing as an adult…looked VERY adult, would go have sex with men then cry rape or some such when caught. Her FATHER knew about her escapades and did nothing. That is why I don’t think the 13 yos are as innocent and immature and people want to believe. They are coming up in a different time than we did…they are maturing MUCH younger than we did.

I worked in an ob/gyn office. One patient was 13 y.o, mother of said patient was early 30’s; both were pregnant and due within a week of each other. And they actually thought this was SO COOL. (We were required to notify CPS because of other issues involved.) Turns out the 13 y.o. had to deliver via c/s since she was not developed enough to deliver vaginally. Also interesting, this young girl had never even had a period but had two STD’s.
When you look on some of the myspace pages under the orientation description, I’ve noticed that the younger groups tend to list their’s as bi. I guess the young folks don’t realize what can come back to haunt them in the future, career-wise.

Well, a lot of times when someone recants, it’s because they are under a lot of pressure from the family to do so. Look how often victims of domestic violence try to recant their stories in court, or how often a child is pressured to recant the story so that mom’s boyfriend or whoever can move back in. Add onto that the incredible guilt of feeling like you’re the one responsible for the suicide, and must rehabilitate your deceased father’s reputation, and I think lots of people might recant, true or not.
Not saying that’s necessarily what happened with your friend’s family; just that while claims of molestation are false, recantations are also sometimes false.

I think at this age, it is absolutely normal to experiment with members of the same sex. The only difference is NOW, it isn’t seen as taboo.
People grow and mature. I doubt a future employer will look at someone’s myspace page at 13 and base their judgments on that. Sexual orientation would have nothing to do with hiring practices anyway. If so, I know a few skanks that work with me that need to get their butts fired.
I think 13 year olds are still 13 year olds. Just like when I was 13, there were the innocent, virginal, untouched, pure-as-the-wind-driven snow ones like ME, and then there were the couple of very sexually active ones. It doesn’t work like that. Biologically (and generally speaking), 20 year olds and 13 year olds are capable of procreation. A 7 or 8 year old is not. Pedophiles are sexually attracted to prepubescent children. 13, in most cases, is not prepubescent. That means, while the people who sleep with them are doing something socially unacceptable, they are not “sick” in literal terms, like pedophiles are.
As for this case, if the woman broke the law, send her to jail. I hope the judge uses discretion - If the activities were clearly consentual, that should be a consideration. The sexual activity in and of itself is not necessarily what’s damaging. Manipulation is, though.
Incidentally, the double-standard is not as much male/female as it is attractive/unattractive. Many states have laws addressing whether or not the victim was manipulated into participation. Unattractive people are much more likely to have to manipulate than attractive ones do. Most of the women that make headlines for this kind of behavior are attractive, hence the generally shorter sentences. The ugly ones tend to get longer sentences. The same goes for men.

When I was about 17, my best friend was 13, and she was a slut. She was in complete control of her relationships, many of which were with older men. Most of them were totally enamored with her.
One of them flaked on her one time, and she dumped him. (She may have been 14 by this point, but he was definitely in his 20s.) He was pissed, and I had talked some shit (me and my big mouth), and he broke into my house and stole my Playstation. I called the cops, but they couldn’t prove it was him, so nothing could be done.
This never occurred to either of us at the time, but we could have just had him arrested for sleeping with her. What if it had occurred to us, and we had followed through? She would have it on her conscience today that she labeled a man a child molester for the rest of his days, because we were pissed that he stole from me.
Another of my friends slept with her when she was 14, and he was 19 or 20. He’s a good person, never hurt her or took advantage of her, and they remain friends to this day. I would trust him around my future kids, without reservation, and so would she.
These things should be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Wow! I had no idea things were so messed up down there. From what I can tell, and I read many of those comments and scanned most of the rest, they ran about 95% in Stephanie Kikland’s favor. And it appeared that vast majority of comments were from people with no connection to her or her family.
On the contrary, False allegations of child rape and sexual abuse are a real problem in that area of SC, and the police seem to have a pretty low standard to trigger an arrest. None of this may mean anything in regards to this case, but it’s good to know.

I dont think age of consent laws should be 13 or 14 nationwide, as in a 14 yr old can give consent to have sex with a 45 yr old man………But I do think they should be closer to 16 nationwide, or have a larger gap in the “Romeo and Juliet” laws ages
even tho this is a case involving 2 girls, many time a 17 or 18 yr old boy can be charged with statutory rape of a 13 or 14 year old girl and you know a number of these cases the girls are mature for their age, look 17, say she is,and everything is fine til they have a fight and she cries rape. Look up the case in Georgia of Genarlow Wilson and the outrageous suffering he and his family went thru for several years…….and he had consentual sex at 17 with a 15 year old girl!
