Buning was sentenced this week to five years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and two years for obstruction of justice for covering up the crime with her friend Heather Batchelor, 29. For her part in Cody’s death and the resulting coverup, Batchelor scored five to ten years in prison. Sheldon James McDonald will stand trial in January.

. He and Pamela Buning had been living in an apartment above a florist’s shop in downtown Kalmaska for a month or so, and apparently Buning thought it was just fine for McDonald to “discipline” her little boy.
When police arrived at the apartment at about 9:30 Friday night, McDonald told them that the unconscious Cody had “fallen down the stairs.” What, no bathtub involvement? That’s a departure from babykiller protocol, Sheldon.
Not that it mattered, really. It was pretty obvious that little Cody hadn’t just fallen down the stairs. He was obviously abused, battered and beaten over a period of time that excluded a single fall. Kalkaska County Prosecutor Brian Donnelly says that Cody “literally had bruises from head to toe, on his head, down his back and on his front. He was bruised from being beaten all over his body.”
The reason for the beating? Says Donnelly, “It appears to be a misguided attempt at discipline.” And Prosecutor Donnelly gets the Understatement Of The Week Award. Have a cookie!
Sheldon James McDonald was arrested on SaturdaySaturday reviews while Cody was on life support at a Grand Rapids hospital. After Cody died, McDonald was charged with an open count of murder and felony murder as well as first-degree child abuse. During his Monday arraignment, McDonald got cranky and had to be “subdued” by officers. Sounds like someone has a little anger management problem.
McDonald is being held at the Kalkaska County Jail on $2 million bond. I don’t think he’s getting out soon. And it looks like Pamela Buning may join him, as she is currently under investigation for her role in her son’s death.
UPDATE 8/20/08 – Unfuckingbelievable. Cody Cross’ mother Pamela Buning, 24, and her friend Heather Batchelor, 29, have now been charged in connection with little Cody’s murder. Heather Batchelor is the person who initially called 911 to report that Cody was hurt. As Cody was being rushed to the hospital, Heather was sitting in the back seat of a patrol car waiting for a ride to the hospital as police prepared to leave the scene.
Batchelor then made cell phone calls to both Buning and McDonald. The three came up with a cover story while Cody was being rushed to the hospital, and while Batchelor was sitting in the patrol car. The three finally settled on telling police that Cody fell down the stairs. And guess what? Police car audio recording equipment got both ends of the conversations because Heather Batchelor is a moron who had her phone on speaker in a patrol car. Heh.
So Heather Batchelor called 911 and helped organize the cover story, and Pamela Buning, Cody’s mother, stood by and let her penis beat her three-year-old baby to death over a period of what investigators say was a week or more of torture. Both Batchelor and Buning were booked into the Kalkaska County Jail.

I’m not anti-spanking, but there is a difference between discipline and a beating. There isn’t much a three year old can learn from a beating except to fear you.
This had absolutely nothing to do with parenting or discipline gone wrong and had everything to do with a grown man, a coward, taking out adult frustrations on the body of a helpless baby. What a weak weak piece of shit.
And the mother is even weaker and should be made to suffer the way her baby did. She didn’t protect him, she gets no sympathy from me.

The details I found on his sex offender registry said “Attempted Criminal Sexual Conduct – Third Degree (Multiple Variables)”. I tried to click through, but the charges lead to a dead page. Since they date from 2002 and he is now 25, he would have been 19 at the time.

Having spent some time here at DD I’m not so surprised Mommydearest chose her penis over her baby. That’s sad. What really shocks the hell out of me is that “mommy” has a friend who also chose the penis over the baby. Nobody in this baby’s life gave two shits about him.

How convenient that after this whole tragedy happened, Heather and Pam planned on moving to Detroit together to live with Heather’s grandma. Guess the threesomes they were having together with Sheldon wasn’t enough. They figured they wanted to be together and become a twosome and put the blame on Sheldon for something they did. I know for a fact they were lovers and that Pam was tired of her innocent little baby and that they both have tempers. I am far from saying anyone is innocent in this but there is more to this story that isn’t being said. I have a feeling that Heather and Pam had a lot more to do with this than they are leading everyone to believe.

I am a relative of Heather Batchelor. I am absolutely shocked by everything that has happened. Yes, she has quite the criminal past and because of that, my parents did not let me associate with her or let her into our home, but I would think that she would of had morals somewhere and not allowed this abuse to happen. About a year ago, I met Sheldon when my grandma took us all out to eat, he seemed very nice, I guess Im just too naive. By the way, my grandmother was NOT planning on letting her move back in, and never in a million years would my grandmother allow a friend of heathers to move into the home either. You would have to know my grandmother to know how ridiculous that statement is. Heather went to jail for over a year for stealing large sums of money from her and she pressed charges.
I am so sorry to the family who lost this child. Although I never went to their home, I wish I had because if I had seen anything I would of called the police in a second! my family just found out about this yesterday and we are all still so shocked and disgusted.
the comments about her looks cracked me up, she definately doesn’t look a thing like me or anyone else in my family. Although I know as a really little girl she was adorable, but that was well before I was born. She has had a hard life, but there is NO exscuse for ANY of the things she has done. yeah, mind you this is just what he told me the one time I met him. Though he did show me photos of his daughter and the girls mother(who he was charged with the sexual stuff for) all smiling and happy. That is one thing, that is very disturbing that jumps out at me, how he was showing off his little girl to some person he barely knew…I wonder if he harmed her as well? Someone needs to talk to the little girl and her mother. The poor child. I feel so disgusted by this, and humilated that someone in my own family could be so horrific. I don’t know the particulars of sentencing guidelines in Michigan, but since she didn’t actually kill Cody herself or permit it (just covered it up, like that’s not bad enough), probably not much. I’d guess five years or less, probably, even with a record. Sucks, but there you go.

the three were booked in kalkaska county for the charges stated in the papers but only one remains there as far i’m aware. sheldon is in kalkaska, pam is rumored to be in grand traverse county and heather is somewhere else. you say that heather didn’t actually commit the crime by the phisical means, did she not do basically the same by not doing anything to help cody by either letting the athorities know about it, letting cody’s other family know of it. do not forget that cody suffered for days , if not for weeks. by just standing by they are just as guilty as sheldon is. while cody was slowly dying in a bed locked in a room the other three (sheldon, pam, and heather ) were going on with their lives like buisness as usual. pam went to work friday the 1st like nothing was going on. she even took another child roughly the same age to some lake while cody was already porbably beyound medical help at this time, how much do you want to bet that the other two were doing simular activities in the hopes of a future cover up. there was a lot of anger and hate in the beatings that cody endured. it was sooooo bad they had to bring in counselors to munson to prepare the nurses and doctors for what they were about to see. DO NOT TRY TO RATIONALIZE WHAT THE THREE OF THEM DID. all three killed cody in my eyes.

Dear Stunned, The mother of the child you saw picture of….she was 13 when he knocked her up. He can claim she was 16 all he wants, facts are facts. I know this because my daughter was involved with Sheldon.
All I can think of now is this could have been my grandson. (who was a year old at the time Sheldon wormed his way into his life.)
There are three other “daughters”, btw, all born within months of each other, my granddaugher being the youngest. (my daughter was already pregnant by the time she came to her senses.) Anyway, this should be the clincher that she never has to be forced into visitations with this rodent.

My mom is right……there are 4 daughters, ages 6,5,5,&5. I was stupid for ever getting involved with Sheldon, but I would never regret the fact that I have a beautifull, smart, prescious daughter. She is so great. She doesn’t even know that Sheldon exists, and that’s the way I’ve made it. He is scum. And since I just found out about this yesterday, the flood of emotions is unreal. The fact that this could have been my little boy, who is now 7, scares the hell out of me. I cried a lot about this yesterday. My husband, who is the only man my daughter will ever know as daddy, was just as pissed. I feel so sorry for the Cross family for what this asshole has done to that family.

Megan was 13 when she got pregnant and her parents did let them date. But they were also, drug addicts who didn’t give a shit about what their daughter did. And it was the State of MI that filed charges against Sheldon when Megan got pregnant, not her dad.

First of all I am Cody’s Aunt I am his Daddy’s sister. Just so you know I am no relation to any of those fuckers. I went to court for the prelim on Wednesday and got so sick I had to leave. My poor nephew was tortured for weeks. Heather sat there all fine and dandy while she told her side of the story. Not a fucking tear rolled down her face while she described Cody’s daily beating and torture treatments. WTF! Then started to sob when they played the tape of her in the police car taliking to Sheldon and Pam. She made me so sick. She kept calling Pam baby this and Baby that. What fucking sick bitches did these people come from. I had not seen Cody since he was about one. Pam and my brother where visiting me in Grand Rapids the last time I saw him. Get this! I kicked her out of my house for trying to smoke CRACK in it with my 3 year old sleeping in the next room. WTF! After that she told me I could’nt see Cody any more. Well I guess she made sure of that. My brother thought she was so sweet and inocent. Thats her M.O trying to minipulate people to think she is the victim. I just hope everyone is now seeing it. She even had my mom fooled for awhile. As far as Sheldon goes he is lucky I have three kids to live for cause he was right in front of me in court and I almost just smacked him in the back of the head like a heavy Bitch slap. update….05/30/2009..i have it on good authority that pam was telling the other prisoners that cody was alive…the latest news is that sometine in the last couple of weeks, pam was taken to ann arbor to videotape her testimony against sheldon..while she was gone; guards searched her cell & found letters to pam from heather & sheldon!!!!!! also found pixs of the new baby, which her mom has. pam was to have no contact w/ either of those scumbags…i hear the prosecutor has withdrawn pam’s plea agreement, & she will be retried….becus of her having the pixs of the new baby, her mom might not be allowed to adopt it.. i hope the hell not, if her mom sent her those photos!!!!!! rest in peace dear little cody….he was at our house a couple times, & seemed a quiet & nice little boy. i shudder when i think of what those THREE motherfuckers did to him……..

sheldons trial is in day two and it has been made public the content of the letters mentioned in earlier posts. Sheldon was trying to convince pam to lie on the stand and say it was heather so he could go free and she agreed untill confronted with the letters. She even said that she intended to lie today!!! Good work to the prison guards who kept their eyes open.

Where the fuck was child protective services?…..oh yeah this is kalkaska we are talking about…That place is as fucking sideways as they get. I am looking forward to a verdict…CONVICTION!…and then I say someone needs to hold cps accountable for their lack of attention to such dire circumstances…I believe defense begins its case tomorrow and closing arguments should be by the end of the day…..RIP CODY!
