Mike Wellwood, Alicia Hartner, Phillip Morris
Riverview, MI, March 6, 2008 — Somebody tell me why a guy named Phillip Morris needs to jack cigarettes, ’cause I just don’t get that. Alicia Hartner, 18, is accused of being the ringleader of a bizarre little threesome consisting of herself, her live-in boyfriend Mike Wellwood, 19, and her sort of boyfriend Phillip Morris, 22. The trio is charged with the murders of Dennis Langley and Jack Mascow, both 62, last week.
Alicia Hartner and her men are high-school rejects working menial jobs. The victims, Langley and Mascow, owned a vending company that distributed cigarettes. Dennis Langley had been the only father figure Alicia Hartner ever knew, supporting Alicia and her mother financially for a number of years. Although Langley and Alicia’s mother never married, he continued to funnel cash their way even after the breakup. Langley was generous to fault and kept large amounts of cigarette stock and cash in the house, which he shared with his business partner Jack Mascow.
The robbery was supposed to go down as planned last Wednesday night: break in, kill Dennis Langley, steal his stuff and his cash, leave. Mascow was not expected to be there, but when he surprised the stoned trio they stabbed, beat and shot him. Then they went into garage, where they stabbed Langley in the skull and liver. After stealing about two grand in cash and a bunch of smokes, the young murderers torched the garage and left in Langley’s white work van, which they also set aflame a few blocks away. Because they’re smart criminals like that.
Firefighters found Mascow’s body upstairs while fighting house fire at about 11:30 p.m Wednesday. On Thursday, police officers went back to the house and found Langley in the garage. After getting over 100 telephone tips, Alicia Hartner was fingered as the bad girl and arrested on Friday. The bozo boys were arrested on Saturday. Even Hartner’s mother has been questioned in this case, although she has not been charged at this point.
Let’s just get these felons’ Myspaces out there, shall we? Alicia Hartner’s is here and is definitely the most entertaining of the bunch. She has pics of her pipe and her friends and her friend’s five year old son pretending to down multiple fifths of liquor. That’s hawt. Interestingly, although she lived with Mike Wellwood, his Myspace is much lower-key with few details and almost no friends. And here’s Phillip Morris, who is kind enough to have wonderful pics of high Alicia, high Mike, and high himself. In not a single picture is he sober. (and thanks Amber for Phil’s link!)
All three killers were in court on Tuesday for arraignment on two counts of felony murder, two counts of first-degree murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder, one count of first-degree home invasion, one count of arson and one count of felony use of a firearm. All three pleaded not guilty, and Wellwood and Morris cried like tlittle bitches. Â Hartner showed little emotion and told a judge she needed to get out because she “had a job interview.” Um, that murder thing might make it hard to get that Taco Bell gig, Alicia.
UPDATE 4/30/08 - Alicia Hartner, Mike Wellwood and Phillip “Free Phil” Morris were in court Tuesday for preliminary hearings. Testimony was contradictory on Alicia. Detective Scott Galeski said that “Ms. Hartner was more concerned about her well-being. Her reaction was blank.” But a prisoner in the cell next to Alicia’s refuted that, saying that Alicia cried and insisted she was innocent. Previous witness statements have indicated, though, that Alicia copped to the whole murder, so that remains up in the air.
Witness Joseph Vella, who was tesitfying to get out of drug charges, said that Hartner and Wellwood told him about their plan to rob Dennis Langley prior to the act. Then again, he said, they also told him they were gonna roll a homeless guy for pot to pay their rent, so he didn’t take them seriously.
Not a great deal was reportedly said about Phillip Morris. It’ll be very interesting to see what happens on Thursday afternoon, when Judge Randy Kalmbach is set to rule on whether the trio should be bound over for trial. Will Free Phil be freed? I don’t know, but I’m waiting to find out. Maybe some of his family can come let us know how things went.
UPDATE 5/01/08 - Judge Randy Kalmbach of the 27th District Court in Wyandotte ruled this afternoon that all three defendants will remain in jail and be bound over for trial in Wayne County.

UPDATE 5/16/08 - Alicia Hartner, Mike Wellwood and Phillip “Free Phil” Morris were arraigned in Wayne County Court yesterday. According to family sources, Alicia will face a jury on her own, and Mike and Phil will share a jury and be tried together. There is a docket hearing scheduled for June 20, after which the trial is scheduled for sometime in September. All three suspects remain in custody.
UPDATE 08/06/08 - A fourth suspect in the murders of Dennis Langley and Jack Mascow has been arrested. Doyle Palmer, 41 (Myspace) is being held without bail in the Wayne County Jail. At this time, it is unclear what affect, if any, Palmer’s arrest will have on the trials of Alicia Hartner, Mike Wellwood, and Phillip Morris.
Palmer, a single father of two, was arrested primarily based on DNA evidence from a bloody tissue found in the Langley home. At this time, it does appear that he may drive a silver car very similar to that of Philip Morris, who is believed to have provided a gun and a getaway car for the robbery-turned-murder; this evidence, according to Phil’s family, may exonerate him.  At this time, however, all four suspects are being held without bail pending a hearing on August 29.

According to the statement released by prosecutor Kym Worthy, “We are dismissing the cases because during trial preparation it was discovered that two of our main witnesses on these three defendants — not on (Palmer’s) cases — were discovered to be untruthful in material ways and were inconsistent with the physical evidence. We simply will not proceed at this time.”
And yes, for the record, this is twice I’ve been wrong about someone’s guilt. TWICE. Not counting the one time I was wrong about someone’s innocence. I think I hear Morbid laughing.

Thank you - Again, not being mean, but how did they get his car and were there any other types of identifications made regarding Phillip, or just his car was seen? And, if they believe there was a driver (a 3rd person other than Phillip) in addition to the murderers, is there anyway to help identify that person, through friends or family? Does anyone else know who any of their other close friends were?

About the car, Freephil2 said that they had borrowed his car in the past, so that may be a possibility. Although I have a general disgust for cops, detectives are usually pretty awesome in my experience, and they know what they are doing. If ol’ Phil ends up in prison, it’s safe to say that there is a damn good reason for it.

No you don’t have to share your reasons. When someone comes on here defending the accused, we give them a chance to back up their side of the story. FP2 and I were having a very civil discussion and I even expressed my wishes for Phillip to be innocent. When FP2 started his posts, we started listening. We are eager for the truth, whether from you or whoever, just the facts.
So if you would like to share, please do. Otherwise, until your brother is cleared or you offer up some proof, well, the shaming will more than likely continue. So its your call, defend him or not. I for one hope he is innocent, for his sake and his whole family’s sake. Your right we don’t know him - so share with us.

Except that the 11:30 time is just the time that the first body was found, which was after they’d already started the fire. Did Phillip report his vehicle stolen during the time it was being used in this murder?
I’m confused about why Alicia would implicate him if he wasn’t there. I can see him being charged if he let them take the car, but not with murder. And if they had his car, why did they then take the van and burn it?

Thing is, Freephil. I invited you here to tell us WHY Phil is innocent, not just THAT he’s innocent. If you have reasons, and you want us to believe them, then maybe you should give us some. Just telling us that he’s innocent and we have to believe you because you say so or you’re gonna get mad and call us all names isn’t going to convince anyone. That’s all. If you have information the media doesn’t have, I would love to hear it. I hope your brother is innocent. If he’s not, your family has a long road ahead. If he is, you still do, but you can afford to explain a little bit about why you don’t feel he could have been involved in this kind of crime.
If in fact there’s no evidence that he was ever in the home, then there shouldn’t be a problem getting him bail once his attorney gets that straightened out, I wouldn’t think.

I guess the same way you know none of us and are are judging us by what we type. Except we are just judging your brother for being in jail for participating in murder, theft and arson.
This is a sad situation all around. We have 3 young people that are accused of being involved in a terrible crime. Not only are 2 people dead, but the family and friends of the accused and the deceased are victims as well. I am sure no one expected Alicia, Mike, or Phil to be involved in something like this. It is a shock to everyone. Now there are 3 young lives that are over. People are innocent until proven guilty. We haven’t even heard the facts of this case. Who are we to say Phil had anything to do with this? We have no facts. There are many possibilities. Maybe he wasn’t there. Maybe Alicia and Mike asked for a ride to get money from Dennis and Phil waited in the car. Maybe he had no clue what was going to happen. We just don’t know. I think we should be more considerate of Phil’s sister. She has not committed a crime. She is mourning over her brother.

But you are right, there are many possibilities. Like the ones you brought up, the fact that he was there is also a possibility. Also as we state over and over and over in regards to the “innocent until proven guilty” mantra…we are not a jury.

She is mourning because there is a possibility he will spend the rest of his life in prison. He may never be a part of his family like he once was. That is her brother. She would have never expected her brother to do such a thing. I don’t think most people that have been in similar situations expected their family member capable of murder. I am sure it is a total shock and very hard to deal with. The family of the accused have to accept their family member is not going to be a part of their lives anymore. It doesn’t mean we have to feel sorry for the accused but we should respect that Phil’s sister is grieving for the brother she may have lost. No family get togethers, no quality time together. If he is found guilty, she has lost her brother in many ways. I am very curious to hear the facts of this case.
Ive known Dennis, Jack & Michelle for over 15 years… Dennis for 20. Michelle was always a gold-digger and man-user. She uses her body to get what she wants from men and she obviously passed it along to her daughter. I only met alicia a couple of times when she was little…
I have a couple things to say… If Dennis had been molesting Alicia - why was Michelle still with Dennis - “spending time with him” and driving around in his cadillac just a week ago?
As far as Phillip Morris not being involved? There were 3 people… 2 drove the van and a second car followed to the torch site on Edsel to retrieve the cigarettes - which were in the mini van - and then used as the get-away vehicle.
Dennis was madly in love with Michelle - knowing that she was only using him - and he loves Alicia. It sickens me that this has happened.
People mourn for many reasons. This is hard on, not only the victims family’s, but the 3 kids family’s as well. I’m sure all their parents are blaming themselves, mostly, Michelle… Alicia’s mother. There is no sense in this… lets remember Dennis and Jack… two honorable men who didn’t deserve to die, let alone in such a horrific way.
Well, if Phil is truly innocent then forensics and his alibis will get him off. If his sister truly believes he is innocent then it’s a little early to be grieving his loss forever already. He will certainly be part of their lives if he is innocent. And even if he isn’t, he will still be part of their lives, albeit in a different way. The victims will never be part of anyone’s lives ever again.
I must say this once a week around here, but this is not America, this is the internet. Somehow people keep confusing us with a courtroom.
I understand the pain and shock families can feel, which is why I often try to be understanding of family members in pain and offer them a chance to defend their loved one here. But getting nothing but “you have to be nice to my brother because I said so” without so much as an “I’m sorry for the victims of this horrible crime” doesn’t really make me feel overly sympathetic. I too want to hear the *facts* of this case.

Does anyone know why Michelle, Alicia’s mother, shares a last name with Dennis (Langley)? All reports have stated “no relation,” but friends of mine knew them to be engaged awhile back.
I just find it odd that her name is Michelle Langley by coincidence.
I think I looked at the right Phil’s website - I’m confused — and he seems like a kind of sweet guy. He obviously likes cats, and that’s an automatic A in my book and look what he said about his mother, “But the one main person i can say that i have looked up to in my life is MY Mother. and that goes for all good mothers. thanks for doing your best, thats all a child can and should ask for… Most likely what you want to hear too.”
He could learn to capitalize “I,” but that may come in time.

If he was the driver of the car, he would be an accessory to the fact, a person who assists a criminal but is not present at the crime even if he didn’t know the crime was taking place, plus making him guilty of the crime as if he was there doing the actual crime and will also be charged with what these two did in that home. I sure hope Freephil 2 is right about his having witnesses to the fact that he was home so that his family won’t have to deal with the fact that they may only see him on visiting days at the local prison. My dead husband was in the same situation, trust me visitation is a bad place to take small children.
I didn’t know she did have the last name Langley for certain. I dunno - maybe they were married at some point. Perhaps Its_Just_Me can help with that.

It is a complete COINCIDENCE that they have the same last name. Dennis at one time proposed to Michelle - giving her a big diamond ring - but she would never fully commit to him and it was an on again off again thing - with Dennis always paying for her car, rent, utilities, shopping sprees etc… many of her bills were mailed directly to Dennis.
She would agree to go places with him in exchange for new outfits and jewelry… and he used to even babysit Alicia so Michelle could go out - without him - usually with other men.

First of all this is a tragedy all the way around! Who is raising these kids? That definitly is one of the main issues! We all as a community need to set better examples for our children and not give them the mentality to be evil. I heard through a reliable source that the mother was pretty much not much of a mother more like a prostitute in the sense that she slept around to get bills and such paid. She should have much guilt for not guiding this girl. My opinion is that this man raised this little girl and she watched her mom use him up and she thought she could follow what her mother was doing. It is so sad that she set this example. I have been in a situation where I thought a loved one was innocent but reality struck and I had to face the music. (Phils sister the court knows what they are doing and the dirt will come out in the wash! ) My thoughts are this God is a forgiving God and he will forgive if these teens are remorseful. At this point it doesn’t look like they are but yrs of prison may make them repent.
On another note I believe theses teenageers should be served up a nice plate of prison ass kickings. Cigarettes and 2 grand. WTF were they thinking.

Well I haven’t seen Michelle for many years - and I saw her crying to the news cameras just yesterday and she looks terrible. She used to be real hot - slim - with a nice figure. Men loved her big lips and her - “take care of me” style… I used to wonder why men always fell so hard for her…

I was at Martensens Funeral home earlier and the family was “concerned” about her actually showing up. The police were notified that if she did attempt to come in - she would be asked to leave - and if she made a fuss - the police promised to arrest her for disturbing the peace. I had so hoped she would show -
The funeral is tomorrow… is she that ballsy? I think she is. She has that narcisistic personality that she thinks she is above everyone.

Thank you for pointing that out… Dennis and Jack were truly wonderful. Just really nice guys - never saying any nasty things about anyone. I know for a fact that if Alicia had asked for the money Dennis would have given it to her - she must have killed him for fun.
Oddly I can almost hear Dennis defending her - saying she didn’t mean it or that it wasn’t really her fault… he probably would have paid for her attorney if he had lived.

I didn’t mean that we should conduct ourselves like we are in a court of law. I just think we know so little about this case that it is premature to say who did what and how each one was involved. The only thing that has been stated by the media is that Alicia was the mastermind. We also know that Alicia was the first one arrested. Phil and Mike were arrested a day later. This leads me to believe Alicia must have implicated the 2 men which lead to their arrests. The police have to have reason to charge all of them. They aren’t being held under suspicion, they have been charged. In the earliest reports on this story, they did say that Phil was being charged with the same charges as the others, even though he was only the getaway driver. They have not released many details at all. If Phil does have all of these witnesses saying there was no way he was there then why has he been charged? This case is very peculiar to me. From the time I heard Langley was the ex boyfriend of Alicia’s mother, I knew they would claim molestation. I am not saying I believe it, but I knew it would be the defense. I have read many people state that Langley did everything for Alicia and gave her everything she wanted. If she wanted money, could she not have just asked? This leads me to believe robbery was not the first motive. It has been said on this board that Alicia asked Langley for money and when he said no she killed him. This is where info on the murder weapons would help. Did they show up with their own gun, knives, and something to start the fire with? It seems like they had a distinct plan when they showed up at Langley’s home. It doesn’t seem like 3 young people with little education could come up with this on the spur of the moment. It also seems like this crime must have taken quite awhile. Did no one hear commotion or a gunshot? Why did Alicia seem to have such a hold on these 2 young men? Yes, I know the hold most women have over men lol, but this seems extreme. If you take a look at their myspace pages, you will see the relationship seems a bit odd. Alicia is dating Mike but Phil seems very involved with Alicia. It has been said Phil is engaged, but why is he so into Alicia then? It doesn’t seem like the casual neighborly relationship some people have said it was. I actually come up with a few scenarios that would possibly make sense. 1) Alicia tells Phil and Mike that she was molested by Langley. They both have feelings for Alicia so they both “man up” talking about how they will kill him for hurting her. This is just talk from young men trying to impress a girl. Alicia takes it seriously and plans it all out. In an effort to not look like pussies, they go along thinking Alicia will chicken out. But when it all goes down, they are in the middle of it. 2) Alicia is talking mad shit about the older man she has wrapped around her finger. She says she can get whatever she wants from him. They decide to go over there and Langley doesn’t give Alicia what she wants and she loses it. The boyfriend jumps in and this is what happens. This could also be where Phil had little to do with it. He could have been asked to give them a ride somewhere and then they come out sometime later frantic about what has happened. 3) Alicia, trying to be a hard ass, tells the men she knows where they can score some money and smokes. They come up with a plan and make it happen. This is less likely to me because of the harshness of the murders. Unless they did not plan for the murders to happen. Why not just break into the house and steal what she wanted? Why murder? They don’t seem like the most stand up kids. From their myspace you can tell they like to drink and smoke pot. But murderers? Murdering for $2000 and cigarettes? I think there is more behind it.
The fire was started by putting a rag down the gas tank of the Cadillac in the garage…

We always get a certain number of family and friends who post here. But just today I’ve had people who know our subjects well in three or four different articles, and with very few exceptions, all our new posters and our usual gang have been very nice. I’m not saying we should lighten up on people and be sweet all the time, don’t get me wrong
After all, public shaming is what we do, right? But.
But when you new posters come in and you’re hurting, and you’re finding your friends and family, dead or alive, on the internet, it speaks pretty highly that you’re able to come here, discourse civilly and mostly intelligently. It speaks well for you. So welcome, all you new people (I lost count at about six of you today.) Makes yourselves comfortable. Understand that we are not usually nice to people we think have hurt someone. But we will try to see both sides if you will give us reason to do so, and I’ve learned a lot today, so thanks.
