Update 9/8/2008 – Kenneth Douglas has pleaded no contest and has been found guilty of abuse of a corpse. He will undergo a psychological evaluation and then face sentencing on Sept. 30. He is only looking at a max of 18 months in prison.

of 1982, 19-year-old Karen Range answered her door and was greeted by a door-to-door salesman named David Joseph Steffen. Steffen severely beat the teen and slashed her throat with a paring knife in such a manner that the girl was almost decapitated. He was convicted of aggravated murder, rape and aggravated burglary in 1983, and sentenced to death. While he admitted to the killing, he has always maintained his innocence in regards to the rape. DNA tests later showed that he was not lying and he was not a match for the fluids found inside her body. Now, 20+ years later, a person has been charged with the sexual assault. Turns out it was morgue assistant, Kenneth Douglas, who worked at the Hamilton County morgue where Range’s body was taken to.
Douglas worked at the morgue from 1976 to 1992, but quit by just not showing up to work one day and giving no notice. In March of this year, Douglas, now 55 years old, was arrested for drug trafficking and as required by Ohio law, ordered to provide a DNA sample. That DNA sample matched the 1982 semen sample gathered from Range.
In the time that Douglas worked as a morgue attendant, 29 cases have been found where rape kit evidence is available to be tested. Investigators believe, after interviewing Douglas, that more offenses were committed.
“Our initial indication is it’s less than five but we don’t know,†Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters said.
While they are not revealing all the specifics of the conversations with Douglas, it is being reported that when Range’s body had been at the lab for testing, Douglas removed Range’s unwashed body from a refrigeration unit, where it had been stored for 4 hours, and sexually assaulted it. Now it is being revealed that Douglas has also worked for some funeral homes. Prosecutors are now checking with these past employers.
Douglas has pled guilty to the charge of gross abuse of a corpse and is being held on a $700,000 bond. Gross abuse of a corpse is a low-level felony and carries a maximum sentence of 12 months.
“This is just one sick dude,” Assistant Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier said after Douglas’ arraignment.

Not only gross and indiscriminating enough to fuck somebody’s battered, mutilated corpse, but also doesn’t care that he munges the investigation by throwing his semen in there and compounding the offense from murder to rape and murder. I would say…none. Let’s remember that these corpses are already dead when they get to him. Anyone being charged with anything in these cases would be charged with murder, like the killer in the article. Now, I don’t like the fact that the murderer was charged with an extra crime he didn’t commit, but because he did commit murder, I’m not too upset about it either.

THe issue is that because he was charged with both crimes, he was eligible for a tougher sentence. Which he got.
In the state they are in, if a rape is committed during a murder, the person can get the death penalty…which is exactly what happened to David Steffen. Now that it has been proven he did not rape Karen, even though he was convicted of it, his lawyers argue that he was not eligible for the death penalty.
Of course, the flip-side is that the State argues that because there was a burglary AND that he admitted he tried to rape Karen, but couldn’t, he would have still been eligible.
But regardless, the actions of Kenneth were not only depraved, but could have cost someone their life. Not that I have much sympathy for murderers, especially ones that kill teenagers with a paring knife, but still.

In which I was just pointing out that sometimes it is not what you get charged with as much as it is the sentence attached to it. Because of one guy sticking his cock in a corpse, you had stiffer sentencing options placed on the accused.
Either way, it’s just one of those cases that shows that the act of fucking a corpse is not always a victimless crime.

I think you and I are probably on the same page here. Given the length of time covered, there are at least one of two who could actually have served their proper time for the crime they did commit, and are still behind bars because of the crimes this guy committed.
I’m surprised the charges don’t include tampering with evidence, and hindering investigations. Or did they? I mean he “piled on” the charges by doing what he did, so pile everything they can on him now.
Wouldn’t it suck puss filled donkey balls if he only got 12 months for his perversion?

UPDATE on Douglas (Sentenced, Sept 30, 08 – THREEEEEEEEEEE YEARS) worked in the morgue and a funeral home. At the time 29 yrs old drank alot of alcohol and didn’t remember alot of the night before HOLY COW I do hope my path never crossed his I was only 24 at the time I spent some days partying drunk and didnt remember the night before but never ever would I have … fucked a dead person and in fact one that was beheaded and bloody in the morgue / or my place of business where I depended on a paycheck and wouldn’t want to be caught doing something of this natue douglas was doing more then just drinking !!!!

Former Hamilton County morgue worker Kenneth Douglas was sent to prison Tuesday for three years after admitting he had sex with a corpse of a murder victim 26 years ago – a sentence the victim’s mother said was woefully inadequate.
“Castration would not be too severe a penalty in my mind,” Lori Range wrote from her Florida home in a letter to Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge William Mallory.
Range is the mother of Karen Range, the 18-year-old whose nearly headless body Douglas had sex with the day she was murdered.
That wasn’t the only time Douglas had sex at his second-shift job at the morgue.
Douglas, 55, of Westwood, told authorities he often got high and drunk while at the morgue and invited women there, where he partied with them and had sex. He admitted that while he was an attendant at the morgue, he pulled the body of Range, from the cooler and abused her corpse.
He also told authorities he abused other bodies when he worked there – all young females.
Prosecutors and police are continuing an investigation into whether there are other victims.
“Whatever DNA we have collected is being tested,” Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier said Tuesday.
Less than a dozen DNA samples taken from bodies are being tested to see if Douglas abused them while he worked at the morgue from 1976-1992.
Those tests should be completed this month, and Piepmeier said more charges could be brought.
Piepmeier, a veteran prosecutor who had tried dozens of murder cases, said this case has bothered many people, especially families of murder victims whose bodies were at the morgue when Douglas worked there.
“They all have the same question: ‘Could this have happened to my daughter?’ The only answer I can give them is: ‘I don’t know,’” Piepmeier said.
Douglas told the judge Tuesday that he apologizes to Range’s family and his family for the shame he brought them.
“Twenty-six years ago I had a lot of problems,” Douglas said. “I had a drinking problem. There was a lot of times I wouldn’t remember what happened the night before.”
Douglas, a 1971 Hughes High graduate and U.S. Army veteran, has suffered for decades with depression.
“I believe this has tormented you for a number of years and has contributed to your years of depression,” Mallory said.
Norm Aubin, Douglas’ attorney, could provide no motive for the crime. “This has torn him up. Even he doesn’t know why he did this,” he said.

Damn, I was going to update this story but it looks like others have beat me to the punch bowl. The Hamilton County mourge has done little to protect the dead victims of other crimes. Besides years of selling off body parts or not returning all of them and allowing Thomas Condon, AKA the “morgue photographer” to take staged photos of them.
Now because of this turd bucket, 17 years worth of female crime victims familys are wondering if there daughters bodys were raped as well. And the sad facts are, they will never get an answer and never know. I see another lawsuit coming for Hamilton County mourge.
