James Soares Jr. Treats His Parents Like Shit

Warren, Rhode Island - James Soares, 60, and his wife Marian Soares, 53, had been missing since July 9. On Saturday, they were found - dead. They’d been bludgeoned to death with a grub hoe and dumped in the cesspool at their home. Now their son, James Soares Jr., 24, is being charged with murder. Way to treat the parents like shit, James. Literally.
The Soares home is a rural ranch style on Baltimore Avenue in Warren. Neighbors say that there were always six or seven people living in the home and lots of cars out front. The Soares were social, and liked to throw barbecues at their home on weekends. But James and Marian Soares had a few skeletons banging around in their closets, too.
Back in 1986, when James Jr. was just a toddler, the Soares home was raided. Inside, police found cocaine, marijuana, multiple prescription tranquilizers, drug paraphernalia, a .357 Magnum and $1,350 in cash which was seized as drug money. James Soares pleaded no contest to felony charges, was convicted, and ended up with a three year suspended sentence followed by five years’ probation. Ancient history, right? Except that in 2002, the house was raided again, this time for weapons.
This time, police found twelve long rifles, three handguns and some 30,000 rounds of ammunition. Which is not so good for a guy who’s a convicted felon and not legally allowed to have firearms. So James Sr. got a year on home confinement and another five years probation.
Marian, for her part, left over 27 types of medication. Neighbors said she had cancer and various other ailments, and that she hadn’t been healthy for awhile. One source called her a prescription drug addict, another a sweet, long-suffering woman who lived with a lot of pain. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle, but drugs have been a part of the Soares family for most of James Jr’s life.
In June of this year, Marian got mad at her son and his girlfriend and filed a restraining order against the girlfriend. She said that James Jr. and the young woman were stealing from her. And James Jr., called “Jimmy”, is known in the neighborhood for his hot temper. He’s been arrested a number of times for vandalism and disorderly conduct. In 2004, police found James Jr. angry, pacing, and holding a weapon. At that time, police found three tire irons and a baseball bat in his car.
Police believe James Soares Jr. bludgeoned his parents to death with the sledgehammer end of a grub hoe on Wednesday, July 9. On July 13, the couple missed a family party - unheard of for them. On July 14, Marian Soares’ sister called police to report the couple missing, and right away James Jr. was under suspicion. His stories didn’t add up. He had a rocky history with his parents, and as their only son, he was the prime suspect. James Jr.’s attitude seemed off, too - instead of searching for his parents, he lived in the family home and hung out like nothing was happening while his parents were missing. That was kind of weird.
On Thursday, July 24, police brought in a cadaver dog, who hit on the carpet in the home and right over the septic tank in the backyard. James Soares Jr. was arrested on Friday. On Saturday, police went into the home’s backyard, lifted the cover off the septic tank, and started looking. James Soares Sr. and Marian Soares had been dead for about 17 days, rotting in the cesspool, their skulls caved in by a gardening tool.
Yesterday, James Soares Jr. was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents. During a brief court appearance yesterday afternoon, Soares was ordered held without bond at the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston. This morning, he will appear in Providence District Court for a formal arraignment. It’s the first murder in Warren, Rhode Island, in over thirty years.

Aaah! I knew I would end up seeing this posted on here! I was actually at a friend’s house on Friday night when she received a phone call from a friend. I guess my friend knew James Soares Jr. cousin. I believe she told me that James Jr. did have a head injury at one point and time. She said their family is pretty devastated by this.
Geez, it is pretty frightening to think that I know someone who knew of these people.
wow this brings back the 80’s. it seems they are dependable family members - when they didn’t show up for the reunion they were reported missing. Makes it even more important to show up for them - Missing 17 days and good ole Jimmy Boy just goes about normally… so did he have a gash on his head ?
The nephew seems positive he had help, jr could not of done this alone.
