It would make me very sad if my kids has such compulsions. It is hard enough to find a loving partner in life without having to search out one from the much smaller pool of candidates who share an odd fetish. And while some find a partner who tolerates the deviance, it must be somewhat hard to know that you compete with a pair of high heels or a stuffed teddy bear for your lover’s sexual attention. And then there is the question of how the couple’s kids might feel when it comes out that Dad likes to relax and masturbate in pantyhose and a bra. And that stuff is hard to conceal forever.

But for all I know, in this case Grandma may have smiled widely and taken him out to buy a new lipstick and wig. People do feel differently about this stuff.

In pop culture, the term “fetish” has become diluted and “deviant” has developed negative connotation. In the context of this discussion, psychologically, a person with a fetish is generally unable to attain sexual gratification in the absence of object x, and “deviant” simply means “having deviated from the norm”. We’re not talking about people with a preference, folks. We’re talking about a legitimate compulsion. Hardwiring, as I like to put it. Whether we like to admit it or not, common deviations from the norm tend to share similarities. I reckon that, as genetic research becomes even more pervasive, we will discover even more similarity.

What controls sexual orientation? There are a few basic variations, including heterosexual, homosexual, transgendered, pedophile, fetish sufferers, etc. Are these all variations of the same gene? Gene sequence? If all these tendencies are determined by separate genes, does one deviant gene increase the likelihood of another deviant gene being present?

Obviously, I’m no geneticist. Hell, I probably have just enough information about the matter to be dangerous. But that’s why I’m trying to avoid making statements and, instead, try to pose questions. I don’t know yet, and I’m not sure anyone knows yet. But, if I had to take a guess…

Oh, I definitely would, too. That’s why I try not to speak too strongly about the subject. No matter what correlation may exist, an individual is an individual is an individual. Still, I’m afraid that the fear to encounter some correlation, even a weak one, could be the reason for the lack of research (and availability of results). If there’s one thing I can’t support, it’s hiding information simply because you’re afraid of how it’ll be used. It’s a reasonable fear, but one that shouldn’t be acted on.

My hypothesis would be entirely the opposite: I suspect that people who are conscious, responsible fetishists are less likely to commit crimes because they have more self-knowledge and are not so repressed. It is all about play-acting with like-minded consenting adults, and if anything I should think that having a legitimate outlet for their desires would stop them from transgressing, whatever you or I may privately think about those desires.

I’m with you on this Abroad. I would expect that those who repress such tendencies are more likely to act out in a criminal fashion, while I would expect more responsible behavior from those who are “out.”

Also, what is a deviance, technically? Who sets the bar? I think, as long as you’re not hurting anyone (who doesn’t want to be hurt, that is), it’s all good – shoe fucking, bondage, cross-dressing, candle wax on the nippes, orgies, whatever! Dogs and kids are NOT ok, though. Not at all.

But, I’d be curious to see the results of a study that measured the rates of pedophilia amoung those who identified themselves as homosexual compared to heterosexuals, or the rates of sexual assault among those who report legitimate fetishes compared to those who report none, for example.
