Winnie, TX - David Davis was 43 when he was killed on July 6. Davis was stabbed multiple times in the head, neck and chest. An artery near his heart was severed. To add insult to murder, Davis’ house was set on fire. Who could have done such a thing? Try the teenaged child living in Davis’ own home, sixteen-year-old Melina Perry - and her boyfriend Devan Meeks, 19. Ain’t that gratitude for ya?
David Davis took Melina Perry into his home after her father, Davis’ best friend, died in a car wreck three years ago. Melina had become rebellious, and had been arrested on drug charges. She’d gone to teen boot camp and been placed on a strict set of rules and a curfew - but nothing was working. Her mother and grandmother, at their wit’s end, had gone to Davis for help. He took the girl in without question.
Enter Devan Meeks. At nineteen, he too had a drug history. He also had recently broken up with a long-term girlfriend (her Myspace) and picked up Melina on the rebound. Davis didn’t like Meeks and didn’t think he was a good influence on Melina. But Meeks kept coming around, and eventually Davis decided that if he couldn’t keep Melina from seeing Meeks, the boy could at least get a job.
Davis helped Meeks get several jobs, in fact - but Devan Meeks wouldn’t show up for work, and would get fired. This led to yet more turmoil in the Davis home. Davis suspected drug use. Melina insisted on seeing Meeks anyway. Finally, in late June, Davis had had enough. He told Devan Meeks to stay out of his house and away from Melina and not to come back.
On July 6, an argument erupted. Meeks says it started outside, when he and Melina Perry were trying to “borrow” a car. Davis’ family says the car wouldn’t run, but that Meeks and Perry probably didn’t know that. In fact, Devan and Melina had showed up at Davis’ house in a truck stolen from one of Devan Meeks’ relatives.
When Davis came outside and caught the pair trying to steal his car, he confronted them - first outside, then in the house. And that’s when someone grabbed a pair of steak knives and went to town on David Davis.
Davis was attacked so brutally that one knife was broken off and left embedded in his back. For all his trouble in helping to raise the daughter of his best friend, he died hard, bloody and battered and left to die alone in his burning house. And if that’s not an illustration of “no good deed goes unpunished”, well, I don’t know what is.
Devan Meeks and Melina Perry took off to Oklahoma once Davis was dead. They went to Meeks’ father’s house in Muskogee for a week, until the law caught up with them. Evidence was taken from the Muskogee house and also from the stolen truck the two were driving, and both teens were taken into custody.
Devan Meeks was extradited from Oklahoma to Texas, where he is being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail without bail. He is charged with murder, auto theft, and has an earlier charge for illegal drug possession. He says Melina Perry did the killing, but he was too scared to stop her or to call for help - but not, apparently, so scared that he couldn’t drive across state lines to Daddy’s house.
Melina Perry was initially taken in as a runaway and sent to Hardin County, Texas, as a juvenile. Texas authorities are planning to file murder charges against her, however. Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive says that while Perry says that Meeks was the murderer, she also did nothing to save or help David Davis, and as such will face murder charges as well. LaRive says he will seek to have Perry evaluated to see if she can be tried as an adult.
Who killed David Davis? For my money, they both did.

Subject: OMG! Im soo pissed! UPDATE! Update!
Body: The charges have NOT been dropped! The information was false! But I have talked to him and I know EXACTLY what happend and devan is INNOCENT!!!! Devan stole the truck so that he could get to his dads! He wanted to leave melina because her uncle kept threatening to kill him! He went to melinas to tell her bye and to get some of his stuff.. Her uncle came out of the house and started swinging at devan.. Him and devan got into a fist fight and while devan and her uncle were fight melina grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the back like 3 or 4 times.. Devan stopped and her uncle managed to get back inside.. Devan grabes melina and trys to make her stop.. He takes the knife from her .. She goes and grabs another one out of the kitchen and stabs her uncle in the chest! The knife broke off in her uncle chest.. He falls over onto his chest.. Devan starts screaming at her to stop but she grabs a pair of hedgclippers and stabs him in the head with it. Melina yells @ devan to help her and he says hell no! She stops ans grabs the gas can out of the truck! Devan had stolen that from his pawlpawl so he could make it to oklahoma! She sprays it all over the couch and him. And lights it on fire.. Devan runs out the house and jumps in the truck.. She jumps in to he tries to make her get out… but she wouldn’t!!!
They drove up to his dads and she told his dad and his girlfriend what happend. Devan tells his dad he wants to turn himself in.. But not alone.. So he goes to get melina and tells her.. She sees the cops and takes off running!! Devan just stands and waits! NOW JUST BECAUSE DEVAN HAD FAUGHT WITH HER UNCLE BEFORE HE IS A SUSPECT! That’s not fucking right!!!!! So, Devan stole a truck from his pawlpawl to go from Texas to Oklahoma to see his dad. He goes to get his stuff from Melina’s and to tell her it’s over because the uncle she lives with is all time threatening to murder him. As Devan bids farewell to the lovely Melina, suddenly everything erupts in chaos! Evil Uncle comes from the house and attacks Devan. Devan fights fairly, using only his physical strength, but then — Melina becomes a whirling dervish of death, grabbing one knife after another and then hedge clippers and then a can of gas from pawlpawl’s stolen car and to stab and douse her uncle.
Devan tries to drive away in the stolen truck, but the terrifically active, quick, and strong Melina gets in the truck and he can’t stop her. She wedges herself in the car all thes way to Devan’s Dad’s house — and that’s in Oklahoma! She’s one strong girl! Seems she wasn’t tired out at all by the stabbing and dousing because Devan couldn’t get shed of her at any point on the drive.
At his dad’s the fact that he arrived in a stolen truck is forgotten because Melina tells them all about her uncle kind of going dead due to lots of holes in him. Devan wants to do the manly thing and turn himself in, but the Truly Not Good Enough for Him Melina refuses to go along, so he can’t. The police arrive and arrest poor innocent Devan.

I don’t know if anyone values my opinion or not but David Davis (the man who was murdered) is my uncle. Elizabeth, his sister, is my mother.
David was the kind of guy who’d help just about anyone even though it wasn’t really within his means. It is a shame that this happened to him.
I personally believe, based on the details I’ve heard (and we, his family, have a little more insight into the situation) that Devan most definitely killed him. Melina Perry chose to live with David above all other choices she had. She thought fairly highly of him. I am not saying for one second though that she is innocent in this. I know that teenage lust can lead you to do things you normally wouldn’t.
David and Devan didn’t get along. David thought he was trouble for Melina. Devan was into drugs and couldn’t hold a job no matter how many David found for him. He was mooching off of David and then of course tried to steal his car (showing his character once again). David wanted nothing more to help those kids but he found Devan to be a lost cause so he told him to take a hike.
I believe Devan and Melina went together to confront David. Although they really had no right to. Anyone that catches someone trying to steal their car has every right in the world to be upset! Maybe Melina was going off some love blind high but I sincerely doubt she thought Devan was going to kill David.
We don’t know what went on in the house. We don’t know if David did attempt to use force to get Devan to leave and Devan’s hot headed reaction was to stab him. We all know how cocky 19 year old men react in situations where their pride is on the line. Even as his family we don’t want to jump to conclusions. We just know that it is one thing to stab someone in “defense” and another to break off a steak knife in their back and go back to get another knife to finish them off with. This is the most heart breaking detail of the entire situation.
There were so many times Melina could have tried to stop him. There are so many times that he could have shown some humanity or self control and left while David still had the chance to seek medical attention. There were so many different scenarios that could have left all 3 lives intact and instead, Devan and Melina acted like rabid animals, emotionless and intent on killing.
What seals the deal for Devan’s guilt is that he test messaged Melina’s grandmother and said that he had (or was?) going to kill Melina just as he had killed David. Sure Melina could have sent it, but I highly doubt she was thinking strategy at that point. Of course it is still odd that Devan would send such a message with Melina riding shotgun, maybe he thought she was going to turn him in?
Devan also called MANY relatives and friends to brag about killing David. They were tracking all of his calls. If he thinks he is getting out of this conviction, he is crazy. In my honestly opinion.. They are both guilty.. no matter what part they played… There is no innocence here. Melina deserves to be tried as an adult also.
I am sure justice will be served in this case. Maybe if they had OJ Simpson’s lawyers they’d be able to get out of it but there aren’t any court appointed lawyers in that area of Texas that will be able to pull it off. I just hope that before the end of whatever sentence they get, at some point they feel guilty for what they have done. True, honest guilt is all I ask.
Thank you for giving us this information. I am so sorry that a man who tried to help is now dead as a result. He went out of his way, disrupted his life to make room for someone who needed help and this was his reward. It’s so unjust.
What do you think of Devan’s ex-girlfriend, who is trumpeting his innocence? Do you know her? It’s her version of events that I was summarizing — in which Devan was a passive victim.

WRYBREAD… No, I don’t know Savannah. I’ve read her blog. It makes me sick it really does. I tried to message her and couldn’t. I even tried to add her and couldn’t because I don’t know her last name.
I don’t even live in Texas. My parents were military for a while so my mom left Winnie/Port Arthur before I was born. We visited often though as my grandmother and my other uncle and aunt live in the area. My mother was very close to David.
David had such a hard life, he didn’t deserve any of this. He lost his dad to a heart attack when he was young.. I think 5 or so. Then he was hit by a semi when he was about 8 and actually had some brain damage due to it.. David has 2 teenage children (a 15 year old daughter and a 13 year old son) that haven’t lived with him since they were 2 and 4 and lived out of state so visits were few and far between. He was just trying to have a relatively peaceful and normal life but when his best friend died he promised that he’d do whatever it took to take care of his daughter and make sure she became something.
I don’t really have any hard feelings toward Savannah. She is just a young girl blinded by teenage love. All girls that age will believe whatever their crush tells them. Apparently those two nearly had a child together and for her, as a young woman that just makes the bond stronger. She may honestly believe in her innocence and if that is the case you can’t blame her for trying to stick up for him.
The fact is though, he isn’t innocent and he may just get the death penalty for what he has done. Even if he doesn’t get it he won’t be getting out of jail for a very long time. By holding on to the thought of this guy she is throwing away her life as well and there have been just to many lives ruined or negatively affected by this. I just wish she would smarten up and see the light. She won’t though, she is a teen in love and I am sure we all remember what that is like.
I would like to comment though on some of her blog, I’d like to know how in the world she thinks Melina could have stabbed David in the chest if he was throwing punches at Devan.. Wouldn’t she have to be between the two? Everyone knows 2 men fighting aren’t about to let a girl, any girl, in between them. And lets say, for the sake of argument, it was Melina… Supposedly, Devan took the knife (after David fell on it???) and Melina went into the kitchen to get another?! Yeah right.. If Melina was trying to defend Devan by stabbing David the first time, she would have seen no point to get a second knife as David, face down, wouldn’t have been a threat… Things just don’t happen that way. They would have left right then and run off.. It is much more likely that a hot headed Devan lost his temper, things got out of hand and in a fit of anger he decided to finish off David.
Oh and btw, they didn’t turn themselves in. Devan’s mom has told police that she was really torn on weather or not to turn him in. But she knew what he had done and knew it was the right thing.
It doesn’t really matter. The evidence will speak for it’s self. The 2 idiots have told police where they dumped the knives.. I am sure finger prints will be found. ALSO, the stab wounds will probably be at a certain height.. One that will show Melina wasn’t the one who stabbed him first (she may have stabbed him at about the same time though? Maybe they both had knives and there was no return trip to the kitchen) David wasn’t terribly short.. the wounds were all fairly high…
These kids didn’t plan this out, there is evidence ever where, phone calls, blood spatter, weapons. They will get the justice that is due to them. But like I said… all I want is guilt. Some day, I want them to realize what it is that they have really done and feel guilty for it. Because no other sentence is harsh enough. They death penalty lets them off easy and so does life in prison… Tons of criminals live rather full lives in prison.. they feel no guilt, no remorse.. So again, all I ask is for them to feel that one emotion and true justice will have been served.
I looked over Savannah’s page and she disturbs me too. I think that whole pregnancy/miscarriage thing was an invented manipulative teenage girl ploy. And I’m not convinced she’s not the author of a couple of those Devan pages. She doesn’t even back off in the face of his apparent murdering behavior. Weird stalker chick freaks me out.
Oh and let’s not forget.. supposedly Devan told her Melina stabbed David in the chest and the knife broke off then David fell on it.. Then supposedly Devan took the knife.. First, lets separate fact from fiction. David was NOT stabbed in the chest. According to what the police have told my family, he was slashed across the throat, stabbed in the back of the head and stabbed in the shoulder/back area. One of the stab wounds hit an artery near his heart. That one is the one where the blade broke off. BUT he was NOT stabbed in the chest.
Also, had the knife broken off (which it did).. they would have been holding the knife in their hand.. David would not have fallen on it like you see in the movies.
And, another inconsistency… Had he have fallen on it (which he did not) obviously there would have been no reason for Devan to grab it from Melina as it would have no longer been a thread (broken and all.. So if Melina were the one to have killed David, Devan’s finger prints would have no place on the weapon.
I guess we will see how it all turns out in court. Unfortunately I can’t be there as I live in Maryland and have a 2 year old, a 4 year old and I am 5 months pregnant. I just can’t pick up and leave to go to the hearing. I really wish I could. My mother unfortunantly won’t be there either as she still has 2 young children and a full time job. She used all of her leave to attend the funeral and break the news to my grandmother who is already fairly bad off in a nursing home. We are hoping my aunt Betty will make the hearing. If she does I’ll be sure to tell you exactly how things go and not how Savannah or the media presents them.

JUST A LITTLE SOMETHING I WROTE FOR MY UNCLE’S MEMORIAL SERVICE… THERE ARE SO MANY MEMORIES I HAVE OF MY UNCLE DAVID. HE WOULD ALWAYS PICK ON ME. MY MAW MAW WOULD SAY ” IT’S BECAUSE HE LOVES YOU.” I DIDN’T REALIZE THIS UNTIL I GREW UP. MY UNCLE WAS A GOOD MAN, A GIVER.HE BELIEVED IN HIS FAMILY. HE LOVED THEM VERY MUCH. ESPECIALLY HIS MOTHER. HE LOVED HIS KIDS. HE WAS VERY PROUD OF DAWN & BRUCE. HIS FACE LIT UP WHEN HE SPOKE OF THEM. THE LAST TIME I WAS WITH HIM WAS AT MY HOME. AFTER WEEKS OF BEGGING HIM TO COME OVER SO HE COULD TEACH ME HOW TO MAKE MAW MAWS STUFFED ROAST & GRAVY. I TOLD HIM I DIDN’T THINK I COULD MAKE IT TASTE AS GOOD AS HERS. HE SAID ” SURE YOU CAN, KRISTI, YOUR A DAVIS.” I WAS BROUGHT UP TO HAVE A STRONG FAITH IN THE LORD. I KNOW DEEP DOWN IN MY HEART WE WILL SEE EACHOTHER AGAIN & NONE OF THIS PAIN OF LOSING YOU WILL MATTER. I WILL ALWAYS HAVE THAT JUNE 27TH. WE WERE IN MY CAR. IT WAS RAINING, & YOU WERE PLAYING THE AIR GUITAR TO NEIL YOUNG’S ” HEART OF GOLD”. I WILL MISS YOU & YOUR ” HEART OF GOLD” LOVE YOUR NIECE, KRISTI THIS WAS READ BY THE PREACHER. I WAS TO UPSET TO READ IT MYSELF. IF YOU ARE THINKING ” WHY IS SHE ON HERE SAYING ALL THIS?” ” IT’S BEEN 6 MONTHS ALREADY”. WE, THE FAMILY, WILL NEVER GET OVER THIS. WE LOST A GOOD MAN IN A VERY SENSELESS & TRAGIC WAY. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT. TWO WONDERFUL KIDS LOST THERE DAD. A DAD THEY VERY RARELY GOT TO SEE. HE WAS SAVING MONEY TO GO SEE THEM. SOMETHING THAT NEVER GOT TO HAPPEN. I’M GETTING MARRIED IN JULY. I WAS WRITNG MY GUEST LIST LAST NIGHT. ALMOST WROTE HIS NAME DOWN. I FORGOT HE WON’T BE HERE TO ATTEND.
This is in the same town that my ex wife’s uncle killed two women in and was put to death for his crimes. Interesting little town. All parties involved my be blood relatives. Incest is best in that town.
YOuR AN ASSHOLE, HARLEY_TECH…. David Davis was my uncle. We lost a very kind man. We loved him very much & for you to say this is very cruel. Do you have a heart? I doubt it. I am not kin to either of these assholes. Thank God! He was just doing what he thought his friend would do for him & for that he was murdered in cold blood. God rest his soul.
Glad to see the schools are teaching reasoning skills so effectively in Winnie, Texas. I’m glad she’s not a mother. It seems for once God may have intervened to protect a baby.

Kristi, what exactly are you busy ranting about day after day? Your uncle was brutatlly killed and you return to yell at people over the precious reputation of your town? Well. murder doesn’t earn a town any positive reputation points. Let it go.
I have a right to defend my town. It’s not the town’s fault that my uncle was murdered. These two people are not even from here. Would you like it if someone said that about your town? Are you saying I haven’t defended my uncle?
Well, Castille, I agree with Ms.Davis. Sounds like you are saying she hasn’t stood up for uncle. It doesn’t seem to me she is ranting. She is merely taking up for her community. She wrote a very sweet & sincere letter to her uncle for his memorial. I would have done the same if someone were putting down my town. Kuddos to you, Kristi!
