Chaudhry Rashad Upholds Family Honor

JONESBORO, Ga. - 54-year-old Chaudhry Rashad was upset that his 25-year-old daughter, Sandela Kanwal, wanted a divorce from her husband. This led to a heated argument at the family’s home that ended with Chaudhry Rashad strangling his daughter to death. He has admitted to the killing stating that he felt it was a matter of honor and that her plans for divorce would have disgraced the family.
Police were called to the house by Rashad’s wife sometime before 2 a.m. SundaySunday reviews
. Kanwal was found in her bed, dead from strangulation. An iron with a cord was found nearby and police allege Rashad used this cord to strangle her. Police say the victim had been in an arranged marriage to a man who lives in ChicagoChicago reviews
and had not seen her husband in months. She and her father had not spoken in two months because of Kanwal’s desire to divorce her husband.
Rashad owns a pizza parlor and the family have lived in the neighborhood for a few years. Neighbors state the family is quiet, but noticeable as the women wear traditional Muslim clothing and the father is known to pray in the morning and evenings outside in the yard. Rashid was described by neighbors as a good neighbor and did not recall in prior incidents.
Rashad is being held in the Clayton County jail.
