SAN DIEGO – Pictured above is Christina Noel Howell, age 21. I know! She looks a bit rough for 21. She’s also a pretty tall drink of water (5’9â€) but a bit on the light side, coming in at under 120 pounds. I’d say she’s not spending her time gorging on Mexican food and bon bons, and considering the dark smudges under her eyes, I’m guessing you won’t find her days filled with healthful eating choices and a careful workout regimen either.
I’m not hating, ya’ll, cuz those don’t sound like my days either. Maybe she keeps busy in other ways—you know, there’s always so much to do. Run a load in the dishwasher, toss some clothes in the washing machine, give the toilet a good scrubbing, track down the Easy-Off to get the gunk out of the bottom of the oven from that casserole last week. I know, nothing sexy, but you have to take care of these things when you’re a mom. You gotta be careful, though—you know how kids are, they’ll put just about any damn thing in their mouths. Body parts, toys, clothing, the dog’s tail, a dead bug, an earthworm, a clod of dirt. You don’t want them getting their hands on the Lysol Power Toilet Bowl Cleaner or, heavens forbid, the Drano.
However, it looked like Christina’s 22-month-old did something just like that. On May 25, the child was rushed by ambulance to Rady Children’s Hospital with chemical burns to the face and the mouth. Doctors determined that the child had ingested a caustic chemical and treated and released the child to go home. Whew, thank goodness, right?
Truth is, ingestion of a caustic chemical, be it bleach, washing powder, dishwashing detergent, etc., by a kid isn’t that uncommon. And fortunately, said ingestion rarely results in the child’s death or even the need for hospitalization. Still, as Dr. Eric Kardon instructs caregivers, “Although most childhood ingestions are accidental, be sure to consider child abuse in these instances.â€
Let’s be clear—I don’t have a beef with the doctors and nurses at Rady Children’s Hospital. There’s nothing in the currently available information suggesting the hospital staff should’ve suspected something besides an accidental ingestion. That is, until three days after the child was released.
What happened was that the child was airlifted back to the hospital, this time with severe chemical burns to the mouth and esophagus. Can you see how it might have happened? In the first incident, the chemical enters the child’s mouth, who immediately spits it out, hence burns to mouth and face. In the second, the child doesn’t—or can’t—spit it out and swallows it.
Obviously, I’m not the only one who had a hard time believing a child less than two years old would take a swig (or mouthful) of some caustic chemical then do it again three days later (setting aside the notion that someone should be keeping such chemicals out of reach of children). Investigators interviewed Christina and several witnesses, and on Thursday, Christina was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of felony child abuse, and one count of poisoning.
Since the authorities aren’t releasing much information right now, there’s a great big pile of unanswered questions. First and foremost, of course, is how is the baby doing? Still in the hospital or released, and if so, into whose care? Second, why, Christina? Was the baby preventing you from doing what you really wanted to do, like, sleep it off, or attract a new penis? Did the voices in your head tell you to do it, or did the drugs make you confuse your child with the toilet?
Internet scouring doesn’t turn up much on this Mom of the Year. San Diego County court records show she was the plaintiff in a domestic violence case at age 16, and on June 11, DV charges were filed against her. Not clear on that case’s relation to this one, if any. She’s due in court Monday, and maybe we’ll find out more then.

What a bitch! Sounds to me like she had to camouflage the taste the second time around in order to get him to drink it. Poor kid probably wasn’t falling for the “drink straight from the bottle Mommy hands you” trick twice. Or maybe she thought the apple juice would “mask” the Drano so nobody would know?
I’d be surprised if this was actually Munchausen by Proxy. I think it’s more likely a case of Get Back at Dad by Proxy.

A Warner Springs woman accused of twice trying to poison her 23-month-old son with caustic chemicals — possibly to get her fiance’s attention — pleaded not guilty Monday to child abuse and poisoning charges.
Christina Noel Howell, 21, was ordered held on $300,000 bail by Vista Superior Court Judge Marshall Hockett.
Hockett ordered a readiness conference for July 3 and a preliminary hearing for July 8.
Howell faces more than 11 years in state prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Keith Watanabe.
Howell lived in Warner Springs with her fiance, the victim, and her 8- month child, Watanabe said.
Watanabe told Hockett that on May 25, the victim, identified at Christian D., was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Children’s Hospital, for a report of accidental ingestion of Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover.
The child suffered caustic chemical burns to his throat and stomach and first-degree burns to his face, Watanabe said.
Howell told hospital officials that Christian drank the whole 32-ounce bottle of Tilex cleaner and explained that the child must have unscrewed the cap because she found him drinking the entire bottle, the prosecutor said.
Christian was released from the hospital the next day, but on May 28, he was again flown to Children’s Hospital for severe vomiting, altered consciousness and seizures.
According to doctors, the child suffered severe chemical burns to his throat, esophagus and stomach.
Endoscopy revealed large areas of ulceration and necrosis (sloughing off of the tissue).
Authorities said Christian was unable to eat and had to be given nutrition intravenously for two weeks in the hospital.
The injury is considered very serious, will require multiple surgeries and will cause permanent damage, according to doctors.
Authorities said the defendant was not present for much of Christian’s hospitalization.
Within three days of Christian’s medical stay, Howell left her fiance for another man and called off their engagement, authorities said.
The defendant told her fiance that he could have the children and she was going to start a new life, according to authorities.
On June 10, detectives found an empty bottle of Liquid-Plumr, an empty bottle of toilet bowl cleaner and a bottle of Clorox bleach under the sink. They also found Christian’s clothing with red vomit stains on them, Watanabe said.
At that time, Howell said she poured Liquid-Plumr into Christian’s sipper cup for the purpose of using a toothbrush to clean the toilet with it, Watanabe said.
The defendant stated that she must have forgotten to wash the cup out and then poured apple juice into it and gave it to Christian.
Howell told her fiance on the phone that “if they search the place, I am done,” according to the prosecutor.
Watanabe said that on June 16, detectives received a call from a social worker saying that Howell was moving to Wyoming within the week and was not going to attend future custodial hearings for her children, who had been placed in foster care.
Three days later, the defendant — who had changed her hair from red to straight black — was arrested, the prosecutor said.
Howell told detectives that on May 28, Christian was having a seizure and his mouth was foaming.
The child fell down, got back up and started throwing up uncontrollably, so the defendant called for paramedics, Watanabe said.
Howell admitted to filling Christian’s sipper cup half-full of Liquid- Plumr, then filling the cup up with apple juice and giving it to him to drink, the prosecutor said.
Christian took one drink and threw the cup and got thirsty again, so 10 minutes later he picked it up and took a “big-boy drink” of it and that’s when he started throwing up, the defendant said, according to Watanabe.
Howell said she watched Christian take the first drink and was paying attention to everything else and “forgot about the Drano in the cup,” according to the prosecutor.
He said the defendant also stated that she knew the Liquid-Plumr was in the cup the second time the child drank from it.
Howell later stated that maybe she would get more attention from her fiance if Christian was ill, Watanabe said.
According to hospital records, the defendant’s 8-month-old child, Cyle, has made 13 visits to San Diego County hospitals, many for vomiting and diarrhea which was never observed by hospital staff.

She has a blog on her MySpace profile in which she writes, “cyle is doing really well finally. he is going to be 4 months old this monthand growing fast. we think he has finally gotten over the spells that he was having when he was continuosly in the hospital every other freaking day.” I had wondered if Cyle actually had been sick (and thus she got her “taste” for the attention then) or if she started with him.
She has a whole series of pictures in a folder named “christians hospital pics.” One is a photo of the “EMERGENCY” sign with the caption “where we almost lost our baby boy.”

Uhm…. I don’t know about you guys, but if my baby was in the hospital and I ‘almost lost him’, taking a picture of the damn Emergency Room sign would be the LAST thing on my priority list. Didn’t ANYone find the posting of this photo on myspace a bit odd? This should have been one of the first noticeable signs that she needed the attention she got from her children being sick. Good grief.

And he has definitly taken charge of his life, he wanted a family and unfortunately all she wanted was the world to revolve around her rat face wench ass.

Just kidding. I’d feel the same. Thanks for the info. If you talk to your friend again, let ‘em know that regardless of what he thinks about us, we were, and always will be, on his side. We are just a pessimistic group and after reading all of these stories, sometimes people can be a bit cynical is all. No harm was meant towards him or the kids…we just wanted to make sure this woman got to spend a bit of time in our personal stockade.

liltaz, I hope your son recovers fully, and that the three of you have all good things in your future. Too many men don’t give a flip about providing for their children, and think that being a father just means being a sperm donor. You have my respect for stepping up to the plate, being a dad, and trying to give your boys some stability.
How well do chemical burns heal? I really, REALLY hope no visible trace of this is left for him to have to explain to peers growing up. Having to lie about parental abuse is enough to make a person sick to their stomach, but telling the truth can prove too much to bear.

Chemical burns are serious and extremely painful. The problem with chemical burns is, the skin is porous - like a sponge. If not treated - or washed off immediately, the chemical seeps farther into the layers of skin. By the time it penetrates the 3rd layer you hit nerve endings and cause permanent damage. (requiring extensive skin grafting.) The burns to the poor baby’s esophagus is a nightmare. They probably had to run a feeding tube to be able to repair the esophagus and allow healing time. How horrible that this woman could do such a horrendous thing to her baby. I wish dad the best and hope he keeps us updated on his little one’s progress.
Looking through their MS pages just makes me so sad.
Their boys are beautiful. How could she look at her beautiful son who loved her & trusted her & try to poison him?
