I was getting a bit depressed looking at the baby blood. Here…a picture of an SUV with a shoe on top of it after it plowed into some church members.
VENICE, Calif. - As a group of members of the Catholic Church of St. Mark where leaving Sunday services, an SUV plowed into them killing a 28-year-old woman and injuring a 2-year-old girl, seriously injuring her 35-year-old mother and a 45-year-old woman, and critically injuring a 38-year-old man, who was pinned underneath the vehicle.
The SUV was allegedly driven by another church member, a 91-year-old woman. Her passengers were two other females, one of them being her daughter who was in the back seat. It seems as if the daughter had an epileptic seizure in the back seat, and the mother had turned around in her seat to help, her foot accidentally hitting the accelerator.
While investigators are still investigating the crash, a witness said that right before the crash happened, a group of children had run from where the crowd was gathered to go to an ice cream cart that was nearby.
Of course, some people are already saying that the ice cream cart was Divine Intervention…and that He put the cart there to save the children. Of course, I would think Divine Intervention would have been for ALL the members to have gotten a craving for ice cream, or I don’t know, maybe stop the lady from having a seizure in the first place?

Jun 16, 2008 at 1:58 pm -Well I don’t know about divine intervention and why God saves some and not others. I know because my wife passed away in 2003. Why did He not save her? Maybe in taking her He saved me or our son because she was bi-polar and had schizophrenic association. Even had thoughts about homicidal according to doctors notes that I viewed later. I will never know. However, I do believe that God does intervene at times for reasons that we are not to know.

Personally? If there is a God, he ain’t paying no attention to what goes on down here. He is either sleeping, or left to go buy a pack of cigarettes a looooong time ago.

Jun 16, 2008 at 2:45 pm -Ok, I understand that the daughter had a seizure, and that might make any driver distracted and crash. But a 91 year old woman driving???? Does anyone else here think there is a teeny lil problem with that?

Jun 16, 2008 at 2:50 pm -Divine intervention would have been if the driver had been the other lady passenger unless she was also 91 or epileptic.

I don’t even leave the house on Sundays until after 2 to make sure they have all returned home from church.

I know from personal experience that He answers prayers, He did for me, an immideate one. And sometimes His answer is No. He has a plan and it will be shown in His time.

Jun 16, 2008 at 9:09 pm -Any God whose plan involves babies being tortured, stomped, raped, etc…. doesn’t sound like a God I would like to deal with.
What the F God would need with these babies to have them suffer so horribly, is beyond me.

Speaking of dark times, Peeperann, I hope you aren’t suffering too much with the flooding.

Jun 16, 2008 at 10:02 pm -I forgot to say, I think a 91 y/o driving is a bit scary. How could she still be driving? Surely she had to take some sort of driving test or something once she “got up there” in age. Right?

As for God, I’m not ready to completely give up on Her yet, but I think curing the girl of epilepsy would have been a good move to have made years ago. Maybe God’s ways are “mysterious” because there is no God and we are just straining our brains trying to rearrange the facts so we can continue to pretend with confidence.

Jun 16, 2008 at 11:05 pm -God does not control any of us including those who do these horrible things. To stop these heinous acts he would have to control people completely. He allows each person to have “free will” to make their own decisions. God doesn’t stop these things anymore than he causes these things. This act was the responsibility of only one person. God’s protection comes in the form of protecting someone’s soul and mind when something this horrific is happening to them. God can create a peace in a person’s soul that is beyond our comprehension even while they are being beat this savagely. God greatest concern is our heart and soul not our body.

Jun 17, 2008 at 2:17 am -No. My grandfather is 75 with alzheimer’s all of his doctors said he couldn’t drive but he still has a valid driver’s license. In fact they mailed him a renewal without any kind of test or even going to the DMV. We did take his car though.

Jun 17, 2008 at 9:25 am -But the elderly lady was driving and her daughter had an epileptic seizure in the back seat. The lady turned around in response and her foot slipped onto the gas pedal. The car plowed into a crowd of church-goers.
I see your argument as far as the baby killer goes — but what about this situation? God doesn’t care that a bunch of people who had just worshipped him were crushed by a car driven by another worshipper whose daughter had a seizure from a serious chronic condition? Did God just gather up all the souls after the carnage was over? Did He see any irony in this situation or was he just focused on the hearts and souls? Is he indifferent to the conditions that His obstacle course of life creates?
I’m curious to know how you understand this. Who knows, your answer may make me less skeptical. I’d love to have confidence that God exists and that He is good.

Jun 17, 2008 at 11:19 am -Wrybread,
While I can’t completely understand God’s plan I can only tell you my opinion and thoughts. These people were worshipping Him so they love him and Heaven in a far greater place than earth so it’s assumed that these people are going to Heaven where there is nothing but peace and happiness. Going to Heaven where these heart breaking things don’t happen is the greatest gift He can give those who love Him to show His love and kindness to them.
I’m sure some people will argue that if what I said is true why doesn’t God take all of those who love Him on to Heaven. My only answer to that is there are still people out there that may be influenced by those that love him and they may be able to bring another to know God.
It’s possible that this accident will prevent another that would have been worse. It may be that this lady really doesn’t need to be driving or this could have been her daughter’s first seizure in a long time or ever and this might prevent her from driving now. I don’t know the plan God has in store for any of these people so I’m just giving you an answer that is mine.
For all of those who aren’t sure about God’s existence I encourge you to earnestly seek him through prayer and reading the Bible because that is the only way I have been able to feel his existence.

Jun 17, 2008 at 12:01 pm -Well if you are asking me for my opinion on which one, I would tell you read the Holy Bible and look into the religion of Christianity. This is the God that I have searched and can feel his presence in my life.
My response that you quoted was to Wrybread’s statement
“As for God, I’m not ready to completely give up on Her yet”
Not here for a religious war. Just sending my encouragement for those unsure about God.

Jun 17, 2008 at 1:06 pm -Thanks. I can appreciate that. I was being sarcastic. I am not here to rant about religion myself. I myself have NO misgivings about God. I do not believe. Period. End of story. I have studied many different religions, history, and was brought up Southern Bible Belt Baptist. Ugh! Fire and damnation. This post mentioned God and thus my remarks.

Older drivers, because of their failing faculties, should be subject to more frequent driving tests. However, a person is not automatically unable to drive simply because they are X years old.

Jun 17, 2008 at 3:07 pm -True, my great grandfather was late 80’s when I was born - 88 I think, I’ll have to check. I can remember going to town with him in a 1953 Dodge when I was 6 or 7, so he was 94 or 95. He drove just fine. Slow but fine. I also witnessed him catch a rooster in daylight, instead of on the roost. That was pretty amazing. Hell, I’d have a hard time doing that myself. He lived to be 106. He stopped driving around 98 or 99.

Jun 17, 2008 at 3:35 pm -Yes, indeedy. My father is 89 years old and drives. In just the last year or two, he has given up driving long distances (NJ to Boston was a regular route), and has given up most night driving because he can tell his night vision has deteriorated. But that’s very recent, and he was wise enough to notice that he felt tired on long drives and strained to see well at night. Daytime, he’ll still drive anywhere, anytime. And he’s still a pretty damned good driver, too.
My mother, too, though she’s a spring chicken at 81.

Jun 18, 2008 at 1:58 am -If the elderly person can still drive without putting themselves or others in harm’s way I have no problem with it. If they can’t drive well because of failing health then they shouldn’t be on the road. I don’t think it is picking on old people to face the facts that most of them have too many health problems to be able to operate a vehicle.

Jun 18, 2008 at 4:55 pm -That makes about as much sense as saying everyone under 25 should not be allowed to drive because the part of the brain that does reason and judgment has not developed fully… which may be true but doesn’t effect their ability to drive… usually.
*insert teen driving horror story here*

Jun 18, 2008 at 5:35 pm -Incidentally, Dakota, did you know that teens and people over the age of 65 have the roughly the same rate of accidents per mile? The difference is, old people drive fewer miles, which is why their insurance is cheaper.
But yeah, it’s all generalization.

Jun 20, 2008 at 10:58 pm -I think that it is a fact in most cases that the elderly aren’t as capable as they used to be when it comes to driving. I didn’t say all of them I said most of them. I would know since I have been a caretaker for many years. I also said if they were able. Alot of times there are health problems they are not even aware of that can make a huge difference of whether they are fit to be behind the wheel. Like hardening of the arteries, heart disease, or aneurysms. Does anyone remember the man that plowed into the fruit stand and killed all of those people. I am not trying to be cruel. I love the elderly and have seen people try to take advantage of them. I just don’t think that it is always safe to put them behind the wheel to keep from offending anyone. I have spent alot of time with my grandparents and their church friends and can say that most of them are in too bad of shape to be driving. I have seen them all over the roads of our town and there have been many close calls.

Oct 29, 2008 at 3:17 pm -My Dad woulkd have been 88 on 1/23/08, but we lost him in his sleep on 1/14/08.. He had macular so he gave up driving 5 years ago, we sold his pride and joy ( a purple bug), but he still had a valid drivers license. They kept sending him one in the mail. I think that elderly drivers should be able to establish how physically able they are to drive on their own, not through rules.. My 18 y.o. granddaughter just got her license and she was a nervouse wreck driving.. She had now gained some confidence, but still can’t find my house with out calling for directions.. Go figure!!!!
