Billy Dan Carroll, a well-known Austin court reporter and longtime civic volunteer, pleaded guilty Thursday to sexually assaulting six children and will receive a sentence that attorneys said will ensure that he spends the rest of his life in prison.
Carroll, 54, rattled off a succession of "guilty, your honor" responses to state District Judge Julie Kocurek during a hearing that brought family members of some victims to tears.
He will be formally sentenced next week and, under an agreement with prosecutors, is expected to receive life sentences on five charges of sexual assault of a child and an additional 40-year sentence on a sixth charge.
The agreement also includes a two-year sentence on a charge of improperly videotaping a 13-year-old girl with a hidden video camera in his home.
"I think it's a fair resolution to the case," Travis County Assistant District Attorney Allison Wetzel said outside the courtroom.
A lawsuit brought by one family against Carroll is pending.
That suit accuses Carroll of fraudulently transferring his assets by giving them to his ex-wife in their divorce, among other claims. It also said that any monetary damages, including attorney fees, would be donated to Austin aid organizations whose goals are assisting sexual assault and rape victims.

The mother, her eyes red from crying, walked to the front of the courtroom, held up a slip of paper and looked at the man who had just been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for molesting her daughters.
She began to read.
"When I first met you, you told me they were safe with you," she said at the sentencing hearing Thursday. "You groomed us, and you gained our trust. But you made a major mistake. You took our kindness for a weakness. ... I had no idea the monster you really are."
Across the courtroom, Billy Dan Carroll, 54, who moments earlier had apologized, sat with his feet shackled, his hands folded in front of his face. He looked straight ahead.
State District Judge Julie Kocurek had just ordered the former Austin business owner and child advocate to serve five life terms plus 40 years in prison for sexually assaulting six children — crimes that Carroll called "the ultimate betrayal" during his five-minute statement to the court.
The 40-year sentence would begin after Carroll completes the life terms, which lawyers say makes it almost impossible for him to ever leave prison.
Carroll pleaded guilty last week as part of an agreement with prosecutors, saying that he wanted to spare his family and his victims the pain of a trial.

The mother of the three girls went first.
She talked about the initial self-doubt in her parenting skills when the case first broke, about how she wondered if she had missed important clues, about whether she could have better protected her daughters.
"I am strong enough to face you today because my daughters wanted me to tell you how much they hate you," she said.
In his statement, Carroll told the parents of his victims not to blame themselves.
"There is no way that they could imagine that I would hurt them," he said. "I was the neighbor next door, and that is what made me so dangerous."
Police have said that they seized a videotape from Carroll's home in which he was seen having sex with children and that one of the girls was as young as 2. Carroll also was accused of drugging a child with a narcotic-laced slushy drink.
Carroll began his statement by saying that he was sorry for what he had done and that he had lived a "blessed and charmed life" that included good parents, a "beautiful wife who was my best friend" and "two absolutely wonderful daughters."
None of them appeared to be in court.

I'm not really sure what to say about this. It's very upsetting to know that this person, who was supposed to be helping families and children was really hurting them because he's a sick, twisted, disgusting excuse of a human being. Absolutely repulsive. I feel so sorry for his wife and daughter.

I heard about this POS on our local news, I live in Travis county. What a sick F*****! .

You know, i think we should have mandatory castration in cases like this. He was a volunteer to help children that have been abused to help them get through the difficulties of testifying at trial and instead he abuses them more. It's just sick, sick, sick. Guys like this make it so much harder for honest volunteers trying to make a difference to actually be able to do anything.

It seems obvious that pedophiles are going to be where children are -- but does that mean that only people who don't like children are safe to accept as family friends and volunteers? I've wondered many times throughout my life when I've been lied to and fucking deceived (not like this but you get my point) by someone who claims to "love and care" about you, what in the fuck goes through their minds? A conscious of any kind must not be there? How could this man, whom was married and had a child of his own, conduct himself like this and live with himself? He would have to either condone it somehow in the recesses of his warped fucking mind or block it the fuck out.
