Dora Nance and Florence Holmes
Cincinnati, OH - At about 12:00 a.m. on Monday, there was “a ruckus” coming from apartment 312 at the Founders Home Apartments in Cincinnati. Florence Holmes, 93, was beaten bloody, her head cut and bones broken. By 12:30 a.m., police were breaking down Ms. Holmes’ door to get in to her, because the small, elderly woman was too frail to get to the door. Florence Holmes had been robbed of five dollars and beaten. The weapon? A vacuum cleaner.
Five dollars. That’s all that was taken from Ms. Holmes’ pocketbook. Holmes was able to tell police who had beaten her: a neighbor, 57 year old Dora Nance. Probably, had Nance just asked for the $5.00, Holmes would have given it to her. After all, Nance is young enough to be Holmes’ child.
When police caught up with Dora Nance, she confessed. Yes, she really had used a vacuum cleaner to beat a little old lady out of five dollars. As friend and neighbor Bernard Lawson said, “If (Ms. Holmes) had some kids, they probably would have tore that woman up. Probably bond her out of jail and beat the living crap out of her.”
As it was, Florence Holmes’ neighbors and friends just want her to be all right and to come home.
Said Minnie Lawson, another friend, “It just got all over me when I heard because I never thought anybody would do that. (Ms. Holmes) never bothered nobody, just stayed to herself.”
Florence Holmes is recovering in the hospital from her cuts and broken bones. And Dora Nance is charged with aggravated armed robbery and felonious assault. She is currently held without bond in the Cincinnati Jail pending a court hearing on Tuesday.

I’d like to send the poor beaten lady a get well card. She looks like such a proper church lady with her little hat and suit.

Think of all the pain and suffering that woman has gone thru for a measly $5. That $5 may have had to last her til the end of the month- if she was on Social Security AND living at (what sounded like) a public-housing apartment complex.
I’m sure her meds after medicade/ medicare are going to be much more than $5…

Ms. Holmes reminds me of this lady I met on vacation here recently. I was leaving a restaurant and this beautiful older black woman all decked to the hilt was coming in. I noticed her right off because of her hat. (I love hats) Of course, I had to walk up to her and tell her how beautiful she was. She grabbed me up and we hugged each other and she spoke softly to me these words….”Thank you sister for making my day.” We spoke for a few moments and left each other in tears.
I’ve a lot of respect for older folks. Geriatrics was my “thing” in nursing.
I think I too will send Ms. Holmes something.

Now this is just pure speculation, as I cannot speak for the Hippie - I have noticed that Hippie refers to almost anyone as a brother or sister - (unless, she’s bashing their deserving asses.) I think she embraces all of humanity as brothers and sisters - it has nothing to with race, only her fellow humans.
You’ll have to get an official Hippie response for clarity, but that’s just my take. And if “my take” happens to be right, we could all take a lesson.
I didn’t know that “brothers and sisters” specifically implied black. I guess that’s because in church, we are taught that everyone is our brothers and sisters. (ie. Preacher greeting everyone before service, “Welcome brother, go right in and have a seat.” I’ve heard that all my life.) I just don’t get a color association, myself.

You Pooh are exactly right. I absolutely believe we are all connected and indeed, I do refer to fellow humans as my brothers and sisters. Doesn’t matter what the fuck color someone is. We are all human beings and one big human family.

That was a lovely answer and I do agree.
In my experience though, it’s only been black people whom I’ve known — and of course not all of them - who call everyone of their race “brother” and “sister” and only members of their race. I’ve often wondered about it because it would seem to serve to make a sense of solidarity. But when I look at my race in general, there are many people whom I would never claim as a brother or sister — baby rapists for example.
Guess I still don’t have an answer to my question, so I’ll keep wondering. I can keep up wondering on a question for years until I get an answer!
