Richard Dobeski Wins Lifetime Pedophile Award
LaPorte, IN - In 1964, Richard Dobeski was a 16-year-old who already had a frightening track record. He’d been accused of molesting neighborhood kids. he’d tied one girl to a tree. His mother had broken down and had Richard institutionalized for nearly a year.
In 1964, Richard Dobeski murdered his next-door neighbors Shaun Elizabeth Johnston, 6, and her three-year-old brother Cary Robert Johnston. Cary was stabbed and beaten, Shaun was strangled. Dobeski’s mother found the just-cold bodies of the little kids in the crawl space of the family home a few hours after they’d gone missing. Both children were found with ligatures around their necks. During the investigation, police said that the young Dobeski was smiling, laughing, showing no signs of remorse. In 1964, Richard Dobeski was sentenced to two terms of life in prison.
Fast forward twenty years, to 1984. Richard Dobeski’s attorneys filed appeals, and his sentence was commuted to forty years. Forty years for killing two children. Even worse, Shaun and Cary’s parents were not notified until much later that Dobeski had received a sentence modification. In 2000, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled that Dobeski’s newer sentence must stand.
So in 2003, Richard Dobeski was set free with what he called “$75 and a pat on the back”. There had been no sex offender registry in 1964, and anyway, that was so long ago people really couldn’t remember for sure whether he’d raped the children or just killed them. In his 50s, Dobeski had spent his entire adult life learning how to look like everyone else.
Apparently, it worked. Dobeski went to college to study computers and journalism. By 2007, he’d set up his own phantom organization, Indiana C.U.R.E. - Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errants. It didn’t exist except in his head, but he posted as its “Executive Director” in this very telling post from Topix.net. On August 31, 2007 - 43 years to the day after the murders of Shaun and Cary Johnston - Richard Dobeski was again arrested, this time for molesting a seven-year-old boy. He was 59 years old.
The new molestation case came to trial this week. On Tuesday, April 15, the jury in LaPorte heard from the child victim, who said that Dobeski touched him and it felt “nasty”. He said that Dobeski pulled his pants down, threatened to spank him, molested him. The jury saw pictures of Dobeski, clad only in a robe, taken by the boy, who met Dobeski when he moved into their neighborhood in the spring of 2007. The jury, imported from another county, was out for two hours yesterday before convicting Richard Dobeski on the charge of child molestation.
On June 9, Dobeski’s next trial begins, on a child pornography charge stemming from the same investigation as the molestation. Investigators say that Dobeski offered $50 to three boys to let him take photos of them last year. During a search of his residence, authorities found a computer containing images of young boys in various stages of nudity. They also found several books on child psychology and how to relate to vulnerable children.
If convicted of the child pornography possession charge, Dobeski will only get three years for the Class D felony. He might get up to eight years on the molestation charge at his May 15 sentencing for yesterday’s conviction. Given Indiana’s sentencing laws, this means that Richard Dobeski could feasibly be back on the streets before he is 65, so he can troll for more victims and offend again. Clearly Dobeski is going to keep hurting children as long as Indiana allows him to do so. At what point do we just pin the Lifetime Pedophile Award on the guy and put him away for the rest of his life?

You could say he’s “rehabilitated” - he didn’t kill these kids. Maybe 40 years bled away his murderous impulses, but obviously not his pedo proclivities. He had his chances - and prison didn’t do a good enough job.
And the instruction manuals for identifying, targeting and abusing vulnerable children turned off all my remaining liberal sensibilities.

Yep, someone should definitely kill him. There’s absolutely no reason for this man to live–he does nothing to bring anything good to the world, and everything to harm it.
I just don’t understand why anyone would think a pedophile can be rehabilitated or “cured.” Your sexual preferences are what they are. You can’t make a gay person straight, you can’t make a straight person gay, and you can’t make a pedophile or rapist stop wanting sex with children or by force. You just can’t. And I don’t buy that they can learn to control it, either–the sexual drive is about the strongest, and most ingrained drive there is, and sex drive/fetish/lust for control over another human, whatever, doesn’t care if it hurts people. All you can do is take them out of the gene pool.

Or scientific study - and I didn’t say they had to die first. Just study their sick asses and maybe there can be a “why” determined or a gene singled out that causes this sick behavior. Maybe they could be of some use, if we could learn to identify them or certain traits that point to this type of behavior BEFORE there is a victim.
Why, oh why do the laws and courts allow these FREAKS to roam free? He has killed, molested, and has child porn and this isn’t enough of a RED FLAG that he’ll most likely do it again???
Why don’t we have tougher laws in the United States against SEX OFFENDERS? One count of ANYTHING SEXUAL and they should be PURGED from existence FOREVER!!

He couldn’t be rehabilitated in nearly 40 years, so why do they think the rest of the shit like him can be “fixed” in less time than that. Just rid the world of them!!! And, look what the dumb bastard was studying - yeah, he really wanted to change his life around. POS.
He got himself a good education in the pen, for future use. That’s what is such an ass burner - they have psychology books for the bastards to study in the pen. I realize it said “they were in his possession at the time of his release” - but my money says he was studying those types of books while he was a resident of the pen at the taxpayers expense.
You know if we send certain types to prison, isn’t there just some books they shouldn’t be allowed to read like - “How to Relate to Vulnerable Children” or “How to Make A Bomb” or any of those how to books. Damn damn and double damn, its one thing to educate them, its another to teach them how to commit crimes and get by with it.
Why did the court revise his sentence? Do we have idiots making these decisions? He should be in jail forever, should never have been out to frighten and harm more little children.
I found his post weird. While it would be good if inmates learned some useful job skill while in prison, I don’t see how that would have made him not want to screw children. And what would these skills be? Electrician? Plumber? In your house? No way!

2 things. 1, the correct spelling is Shaun not Shawn. 2nd - to Wrybread - in 1984 the defendant filed a Petition for Post Conviction Relief (alleging some civil rights violation). A lazy and/or misguided prosecutor, who apparently didn’t want to be bothered with going back to court even though the petition was without much merit, changed his sentences in exchange for the defendant withdrawing his petition. That is how this sick, dangerous defendant got out.
