Hmm…in the comments section of the above-linked article, several posters have said that she was molested/raped in the past, and that they suspect that man (who apparently has recently been released from jail) returned to kill her for revealing the past assault. Whether that’s true or not, it does seem like she had been through a lot even prior to this. Which really sucks; teenage girls shouldn’t have to worry about anything bigger than whether or not Jimmy is going to ask her to the dance.

But, unfortunately, more and more often, teenage girls (all minor girls, actually) are having to worry, instead, about whether Chester is going to drag them into a dark room or alley. All child molesters should either be incarcerated for life, or executed. That’s the only sure way to prevent them from offending again. I hope they catch this girl’s killer, and when they do, I hope they let the girl’s parents have a go at him before the execution. I know that will never happen, but I can still hope, can’t I?

Reading in another forum they say she was stabbed to death and one post claimed that she was suppose to testify against a friend of her biological father the next day. Police haven’t confirmed anything though.

So they’ve definitely ruled out the stepdad and the bio-dad’s friend? Do they have ANY leads?

I believe the stepdad was ruled out based on his alibis – he accounted for when he left work and when he arrived home, and had eyewitnesses to verify. I don’t know about any other suspects at this time.

Meghan Landowski, a 16-year-old student at Woodrow Wilson High School, was found dead in her family’s home on Roberts Court West on April 10. Police and Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) brought a man in for questioning and released him, identifying him only as “a person of interest” to the case.

Police spokeswoman Jan Westerbeck said detectives are not releasing any information about the cause of death or any potential suspects. It was brought up in our forums, but also in some news report comments from people closer to the case (see comment #1). We also did get contacted with some of that information, but due to the lack of a suspect, I didn’t publish it until we had a little more to go on.

im sorry just because you know “no” him and have his number and play violin with him ,please dont think hes not capable of murder,our best friend from grade 2 (my husband and i both) bestman at our wedding,babysat our kids faithfully and was fantastic with them committed a brutal murder that would make your head spin and we also sat and said”no way in hell” after the shock wears off and your head stops spinning enough to think you begin remembering little bits and pieces of events,conversations etc and it will sink in that you really didnt know a side of him that he didnt want you to know and im sure as time goes on and trial starts etc you will begin to chip away at the bits and pieces and realize people who murder show what they want you to see and are very crafty except that they seem to forget now a days you cant get away with murder,,you will always get caught,,with forensics,D.N.A,all the little tools they have it may take awhile but they will catch you

I found it difficult to believe that there would be lasting and permanent damage to a someone whose web page was posted. You can take what I say with a grain of salt but all I am doing now is telling you the latest. The Sheriff said the “primary offender” not “the suspect.” That leads me to believe there was a witness or more than one offender. But again, that’s my deduction from it all.

That seems very odd to me. Meghan was murdered in April, right? If Barnes was indeed forced into doing something against his will, he seems to have led a pretty normal, if not happy, life over the last six months (based on his MySpace) and doesn’t appear to have been held hostage. He’s had a lot of time and opportunity to go to authorities.

Governor’s School is an elite school for Gifted and Talented Students from the Hampton Roads area. Governor’s school is the Juillards of P-Town! Not nearly as upscale but you get the idea.

Why didn’t he tell the authorities as soon as mystery person left with the gun? If he went to school, he obviously wasn’t being held hostage. Did mystery person threaten to do something worse if Barnes went to the police?

I can’t even imagine trying to live with myself after taking the life of another human being, gun to my head or not. Fight or flight, I’ve heard. Either way, I’d either be dead or in a looney bin…not going about life as if nothing had ever happened. So much so, that my closest friends had no idea that was something was wrong.

I knew Meghan and have been devastated by her death. I still can’t believe that it happened. On Friday morning when I got the call to watch the news but I got goosebumps. And when I heard the Chief say that it was a 17 year old boy I couldn’t believe it. I had it in my head that it was the jerk that molested her. I still can’t believe that a child could do something so horrible. I have looked at his myspace and the only thing that I found disturbing was the picture of a news cast in which Robert Barnes superimposed his own pic in the small monitor that had the caption rape suspect under it. Why would anyone do that? And to the young lady from Churchland-good try but it’s the correct Robert Barnes. I understand that you believe that your friend could do such a thing but he had things in his home that where taken out of her house.
Last night the news reported that someone placed letters to the residents of Roberts Ct. telling them that Robert was in the house and did enter through the window but only because Meghan called him and ask him to. And when he came through the window he saw Meggy bound up and a marked man was there stabbing her. The man also stabbed Robert but not bad and let him live. WHAT BS! If that happened why didn’t the kid tell the cops sooner than now and why did he take a souviener? the truth will come out and I will be at the trail when it happens.

Sorry for your loss, PtownGirl. It is quite shocking when young people are accused of crimes this heinous, especially when the young man in question seems to have been a rather upstanding citizen. Still, I don’t buy that he was forced to do it, nor do I buy that he simply stumbled upon it. Hopefully, as details are made available, we’ll be updated. Absolutly! I have become obsessed with the case. Watching and reading everything as well as talking to the Dectectives and other officers who were there. I just feel like I need answers as a mother, lifelong resident, and mourner. IT WILL ALL COME OUT but I just don’t know when. Also I wanted to correct something I said the the “masked man” cut Robert but actually according to the letter he made Robert cut himself and that is why Robert’s fingerprints are on the knife. It makes me sick! It actually is starting to add up for me because about 10 days after Meghan was killed the detectives were all over the neighborhhood. The were focusing on a ditch that is about 4 blocks away from her house and were going through the storm drain. Well the street is a direct path towards his house and I know that something was recovered but at the time that was all the detectives could say. I spectulate that it was the knife.

I dont know if I am the only one that noticed this or if I am a little myspace stalkerish… but I was looking at his myspace and even though he looks like such a great high school student/musician I figured there had to be something there if he was really a 17 year old that had murdered a girl just 6 months ago… ya know something unusual especially back in april. Well I looked at his comments to see if anything wierd was said around the time that Meghan was murdered and his first comment was made on his page on April 20th, just 10 days after the murder. He has been pretty active on there since with comments at least (almost 400 in 6 months) so most likely that page was made RIGHT after the murder. If he murdered her, or (even worse for his mental state) was forced to watch a friend of his die and then keep it a secret why would he turn around and start this page and act like everything is great and normal… I found that really odd.

Also the picture that someone mentioned before with the news picture where he pasted his picture on it… now thats just strange especially since the page was most likely made after he commited/witnessed this horrible act.

Alright, so I didn’t read every comment posted because there are a lot, but I read quite a bit of them and there are some things I want to clear up. If they were cleared up in later posts, sorry, but I felt that I had to say something.

Churchland is a magnet school, yes, but not everyone in the school is in the magnet program. Only certain students who auditioned to be in the magnet program and a few others were able to be in it. For the music portion (which Robert Barnes was in), the students had to stay after school for another class. For the dance and visual arts, there were classes held during school.

There are people in the magnet program who weren’t very smart and didn’t do too well in English, but don’t think that people in the magnet program aren’t smart. I take offense to what was said about the students in the magnet program. I was in the magnet program when I went to Churchland. If you think you’re smart enough to make fun of magnet students for not being smart, I’d suggest you take the tests that we took. I bet you wouldn’t pass. There are very bright people in magnet.

I know Robert Barnes. I don’t believe he did it. Let’s try to remember that he has not been found guilty. Not yet, at least. So at this moment, he’s innocent.

I knew I didn’t do what they were accusing me of. Turns out there was another girl by the same first name as mine and they though I was her. I didn’t let them get to me because I knew what the truth was. I was 13 when this happened. Now, he’s 17, seems to be a very well raised young black man has everything going for him and seems to know what right from wrong is. He was interviewed by the police and was charged for burglary and murder. There must have been something he said when he was in the interrogatory room that led them to charge him with burglary and murder. There is no way around that. Although, they state they do not have a confession, they have enough to charge him with the above. Although there may be a motive established, they may not have released it because this case is in the juvenile court system and not the criminal. More hush hush is put on the case because of that. Unless if he is charged as an adult with this crime, we may never find out the motive. With that being said, there is nothing wrong with believing he is innocent, just that I really don’t think he is. And I will still point and laugh when he is found guilty by our lovely court system

I went to Churchland. I am ashamed of the kids going into that school, not so much the teachers that are teaching in the high school. (I know thats harsh but keep reading) I graduated… 6 years ago… and I still go back and talk to a few of them. So they are very involved and try ot teach the packs of wild animals that get pushed into their classes, but the damage is already done. A kid in my class was acctually adopted by a teacher because his family abandoned him when he was only 16. Its rediculous what the kids in this area are being exposed to and have to go through. My daughter will never go to churchland and for that matter any school around this area. Sorry to say it but the kids are just surrounded by so much at such a young age that I feel like she could get so much more and go so much further then I did if she was somewhere better… though I dont know if its like this everywhere, I just cant see putting her through the hell of these school systems. Hearing the things that are going on now, they are 20 times worse then when I was there.

So yea I am sure I will get some of the young people that just graduated, or are attending churchland currently, mad about the comments that I have made but once you get out of that hell and go on to something better, that you will meet people from other areas of the state/country and when you hear about how they grew up I hope you feel as if you’ve been cheated and that you do something about it to make your life better. Or atleast move away once you have kids so that they will not be subjected to all this.

Ok. But every single site it have been on regarding this case states that he was in the room and his hand was cut. Every supporter states that this is the way it happened. To me, he is not innocent because he could’ve called after the fact. To me, he could’ve have saved her life but he didn’t. He ran like a coward. From all the other crap that I’ve read related to the case, the cops are really racists in this town and supposedly planted the evidence in his room. The other crap that’s being said is that the reason the family moved to Mississippi is because they had something to do with it. People think it’s suspicious that the family moved that far. I for one do not. I would not want to stay in a town that knows what happened to my daughter. I wouldn’t want someone feeling sympathy for me every time i turn the corner or go into a store. And then there are people who get put away thanks to definitive evidence. I feel like this will be one of those. I interned for a public defense attorney. I know all about the injustice associated with the justice system. But, when people are wrongly convicted, it’s usually a matter of inaccurate witness testamony or circumstantial evidence. It sounds like, in this case, they’ve got some physical evidence. Physical evidence RARELY leads to wrongful convictions.

Now, the problem with your statement is that, we don’t typically joke about those who have encountered misfortune. Meghan encountered misfortune – see any jokes about her in this thread? Robert appears to have dealt that misfortune. That’s why we get to take shots. Now, if for some reason we’re wrong, we’ll take back everything that we said. But something tells me we won’t be. We’re almost never wrong.

Even if Robert is found guilty, that doesn’t always mean that he is. There are innocent people who get put away all the time.

True, but you should wait until all the evidence is presented, and then pick a side. There are many crimes committed by seemingly ‘normal’ people, who’s friends and family never saw it coming. It’s hard to imagine someone you thought was ‘nice’, doing something horrible. But many ‘nice’ husbands, wives, coworkers, and friends, are on the news everyday for doing terrible things.

People close to them don’t want to believe it, because they think it somehow makes themselves look bad. They think they should have known the person was unbalanced, or sick. But many criminals are very good at fooling people, look at Scott Peterson! I know you don’t want to believe your friend is guilty, I don’t blame you. But at the same time, please brace yourself for the possibility that he is.

From all the other crap that I’ve read related to the case, the cops are really racists in this town and supposedly planted the evidence in his room. The other crap that’s being said is that the reason the family moved to Mississippi is because they had something to do with it. People think it’s suspicious that the family moved that far.

I have lived in Portsmouth for almost 30 years. How could a town that has had a black mayor in power for most of that time be ran by racist cops. The only time that I’ve ever heard that is when a “Race Card” is being played. If the police were going plant evidence on anyone it would’ve been the bastard Navy Lt. that molested her.
As far as Chris and Angie Shortt go, they moved to Mississippi because Angie could not bear the thought of living in the home where their beautiful daughter was attacked, bound, and let to lay in her blood. Anyone who has children would understand that.
It’s true that Robert Barnes is innocent until proven guilty. I understand that his friends and family don’t want to believe it. I’m still in shock that a child could’ve done it. The evidence will tell and I can’t wait to see it presented. I will be in that court room, so that the killer can see my tears along with all of the others who love Meghan. I for one will continue to pray for justice and accuracy. I only want the RIGHT man punished!

There was a article in the virginia pilot today that told alot more about the crime. He will be charged as an adult, of course. They told about when they interviewed him before charging him and told that at her house there were bloody foot steps all over the place, to the kitchen sink and back and the prints were nike air shoe. Doesnt that sound like a young guy that cant figure out what to do, not like some old guy who elaborately called him over and set him up and had it all planned out.
