Norfolk, VA - Heaven Kristina Smith, 21, is a fat porker who starved her ten-month-old twin daughters. Miracle Grace Bryant died on Tuesday, April 8, and her twin Heaven L. Bryant is in critical condition. Smith’s babydaddy, Corey Alan Bryant, 21, returned from a three-week deployment on Tuesday, arriving at home just in time to call 911. Now both parents are facing neglect charges, and Smith is charged with second-degree murder.

Sources aren’t clear on how long the infant girls were left without food, but Miracle Grace died at DePaul Medical Center at about 9:30 on Tuesday morning. Whether she was dead when she got there is unclear at this time. Little Heaven Bryant was transferred to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital that same day, where she remains critical.

Both Smith and Bryant are Navy sailors. Bryant is assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Monterey, and had been out on a three-week deployment just before Miracle’s death. He arrived home on Tuesday morning, according to the Navy, and on seeing the children called 911 for help. Smith is assigned to Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base as a ship’s serviceman. Neither parent had requested help from the Navy’s Family Support Services, according to a Navy spokesman.

Miracle’s cause of death has been ruled a homicide by medical and nutritional neglect. Whether that starvation extended longer than the three weeks Corey Bryant was deployed will be very interesting to find out. To me, it kind of looks like a case could be made that Heaven Smith starved the babies while Corey Bryant was gone. Authorities, however, seem to see things differently, and they have charged both parents.

Heaven Kristina Smith is charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of felony child neglect. Corey Bryant has been charged with two counts of felony child neglect. After their arraignment on Wednesday, both parents are currently being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond.

UPDATE 5/21/08 - A grand jury handed down new, more severe charges in indictments yesterday against Heaven Kristina Smith and Corey Bryant in the death of one of their daughters.

The grand jury heard evidence that the family’s apartment was “piled up” with over 170 dirty diapers. That’s a lot of diapers. But far more disturbing was the medical evidence in the death of Miracle Grace Bryant, who died April 8 of starvation. Little Miracle, only ten months old, had no body fat at all when she was seen in the hospital the day of her death. None. Zero percent body fat. That goes far beyond inability to get help, or postpartum depression - that’s murder, and it takes a lot longer than a couple of weeks.

The grand jury agreed. Heaven Kristina Bryant is now being charged with first-degree intentional murder in baby Miracle’s death. Corey Bryant, Miracle’s father, is charged with felony homicide, which is a lesser charge that could include reckless homicide.

Their surviving child, Heaven Love Bryant, is in the care of Corey Bryant’s mother.

Heaven Kristina Smith and Corey Bryant remain in jail without bond.

My mother is a nurse at NMCP the hospital that the surviving baby was taken to. and I did not read through all the comments so I am not sure if some of this has been said but I would like to clear up alot of the confusion in this story. Most of the things that I am stating were told to me around the time of the baby’s admitance into the hospital so I am prety sure about the facts that I am giving but dont attack me if I miss state something!

First of all these twins were what, 10 mths old, and when Miricle was admitted she weighed less than 9 lbs! Thats less than my birth weight!!!! The baby’s skin appeared to be hanging off of it and was so paper thin that it was hard to look at my mother said.

When she was admitted the nurses in the NICU ward said that they could not even handle her because her nervous system couldn’t handle it. She became over stimulated almost immediately most likely due to the fact that she was never handled at home. Those twins likely laid in the crib for days at a time rarely being touched or attended to.

Along with the 170+ dirty diapers that were found in the house there was rotten baby food that had to be months old. The fridge had PLENTY of adult food in it but no edible baby food or formula was found in the house

About the father, if you can call him that, he was only on deployment for 6 weeks, seeing the weight that baby was at there is no way that a stomach problem caused them or that the father did not know about it. It takes alot longer than 2 months to cause this type for malnutrition!

I also remember hearing that the neighbors, when asked about the family, said they were a nice couple. Then when asked about their kids the neighbors stated that they did not know that they had any kids. That they went out often and the neighbors never saw any car seats or any babies with them and they never spoke of the babies to them. This leads me to believe that this couple just left the babies in their cribs to fend for them selves, knowing that they couldnt get up and do anything that would let any one know about them so they could get away with it.

And also the mother took the babies to a civilian hospital. My mother and I speculated that she was trying to hide this from the navy by thinking that she could have them treated and not be caught doing wrong.

Thats is why these parents are still being held in jail with no bond. It is not just a simple case of clid neglect. These are two VERY sick people and they should be locked in a room for as long as it takes for them to wither away and die, just like they left their daughters. This story is so horrible it brings me to tears everytime I think of it.

I had thought that the maternal grandmother had custody of the surviving child but I am glad to hear it is with the paternal gma, because the mom’s mom said that her daughter was not to blame for this and it was a condition that the babies had that caused it. This is just plain ignorance and I was very worried that someone who believed that would have custody of this poor little girl.

One last thing, a recent update on the case is that the mother was recently determined to be not competent to stand trial. I guess she has gone crazy from all of this. I do not believe that this is the cause of the treatment to the babies though because both the parents witnessed how they were taking care of their children and did nothing.

I just realized I mixed up the babies, when I said Miracle I meant Heaven.

Kroo85, thank you for the info. Those poor babies.
