Henderson, KY – Apparently someone forgot to let Amanda J. Brooks Lay and her husband Terry Lay know that April is Child Abuse Awareness month, so they should take a break from beating their kids. All five of them. On April 1, the Lays’ son Kalab, 3, died of injuries inflicted on him by his parents. Kalab’s twin sister was also found “covered in bruises” and had burn marks on her eyelids. The toddler told detectives she got the burns from her mother after her Amanda Lay poured liquid soap in her eyes for wetting the bed. And oh, yeah: the other children in the home also showed signs of abuse.
Well, I don’t know how anyone is surprised by this, what with Amanda’s charming maternal smile. That has got to be the coldest bitch mugshot I have seen in a long time. Clearly she has the symptoms of meth face, and both parents have criminal histories that include child neglect and drug charges. Surprise!
Paramedics were dispatched to the family’s trailer on Monday where they found the 3-year-old Kalab unresponsive and gravely injured. In the home with Kalab were his twin sister, who was also “savagely” beaten, according to doctors, and three other children – a boy, 12; a girl, 2; and an infant boy. All but the eldest child showed signs of having been physically abused.
Little Kalab was pronounced legally dead at 2 p.m. Tuesday. After organ donation, he was taken off life support Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Kalab’s four siblings were placed in foster homes. Authorities say that both Amanda and Terry have admitted to causing some of the injuries seen on the children, but “their stories start changing” about who caused Kalab’s death.
Of course, people who are close to Terry Lay say he couldn’t have done this, that he was an upstanding guy who loved his kids. Says friend Bruce Henry, “He loves his children, every single one of them. He doesn’t need to be treated that way or portrayed that way. I hope by talking he won’t be.”
Terry Lay’s twin brother, Jay, says the same thing. “I’m sure that he didn’t even know that was going on. My brother wouldn’t let that go on. He’s a good person. Like I said he doesn’t hit his kids, he’s not that type of person.” Right. Because the BURNS ON THE EYELIDS of his daughter, and bruises and beatings to all the kids except the oldest would go totally unnoticed. Um, nope. not buying it. Not when Terry Lay is now admitting to police that oh yeah, he did whop the kids around sometimes. Yes, even the baby.
Amanda Brooks Lay and Terry Lay are being held at the Vanderburgh County Jail. Amanda is charged with neglect and battery and her bond is set at $100,000. Terry Lay is charged with child neglect and is held on $50,000 bond. However, “significant” new charges are expected shortly now that Kalab has died, so hopefully we will see a raise in those figures soon.
