Taunton, MA - When Suleidy Lugo gets drunk, she doesn’t like to drink alone.  But when her five-month-old baby didn’t want to be her drinking buddy on Easter Sunday, Lugo got pissed.  That day, a drunken Lugo piled antifreeze and a game console on her baby boy, fed him a mixture of grain alcohol and water, grabbed him around the throat and struck his head against the side of his baby carrier, tried to give him an overdose of Children’s Tylenol, and finally kicked the witnesses out of her apartment in a rage.Â
Yes, witnesses. The police report on this is really interesting.
A neighbor called police on Easter Sunday night after she saw Lugo stack an anti-freeze container and video game console on top of the baby in his carrier. When the neighbor pulled the heavy objects off the baby, Lugo grabbed her baby son by his throat and deliberately hit his head against the side of the baby carrier.  Lugo flipped out and screamed at the witness when she reached down to help the baby.
The neighbor followed Lugo into her apartment so the neighbor could give the baby a bottle of formula. Meanwhile, Lugo poured herself a Kahlua and drank a beer. When the baby started to cry, Lugo said he needed his “medicine†and gave him a clear bottle of liquid, which turned out to be a mixture of grain alcohol and water. Lugo also gave the baby a half-teaspoon of children’s Tylenol – not infant Tylenol, children’s Tylenol, which isn’t for use on babies under two. Nothing like a little liver damage for dinner with Mommy!
The baby wisely spat out the Tylenol and vomited on the neighbor, at which point Lugo slapped her infant son across the face and grabbed him by the neck for Beat The Baby, Round Two. A raging Lugo ordered the neighbor and her husband, who had shown up by that time, to get out of her apartment, so the neighbor called police.
When police arrived, Lugo was unsteady and reeked of alcohol, and ice cubes were scattered across the living room floor. Police found the baby alone and crying on an upstairs mattress.  An upset Lugo fell on the bed, landing on the baby.
When the ambulance arrived, a still-drunk Lugo hit the baby’s head while trying to get him into his carrier. At that point the officers had had enough, and removed Lugo so they could care for her son. He was taken to the hospital for possible internal injuries and a chest cold.  Officers reported bruises on the baby’s back, buttocks and right knee, and red marks on his left cheek consistent with a handprint. The baby also had a red mark on his neck consistent with being grabbed.
The baby’s father, Sui-Keung Tai, says that his drunken ex is “not a violent person but has had a problem with alcohol use in the past”. Tai says he visits his son often and has never seen any signs of neglect or abuse.  Um, until now. Makes you wonder about that dad, doesn’t it?
Lugo blew a .22 at the police station, which is nearly three times the legal limit. She’s currently being held at the Bristol County House of Correction without bail pending a hearing today. Lugo is charged with domestic assault and battery on a child with injury resulting.
