with a little help from her boyfriend.
Jackie Wortham and Edmund Washington
East Spokane, WA — Dan Wortham, 39, spent a lot of time worrying about his daughter Jacqueline,16. He’d raised Jackie alone since her mother left when she was little. When Jackie would claim to be pregnant, which was often, or would run away, which was often, Dan would go and find her and bring her home. She never did have a verified pregnancy, and she fought Dan on everything from curfews to emancipation.
Dan Wortham said that Jackie could not be emancipated. She was a minor, and she was his daughter. On Good Friday night, Jackie emancipated herself. With a little help from her boyfriend Edmund Washington, 18, Jackie killed her father.
Jackie Wortham’s Myspace is a year old, but it gives a glimpse into the girl Jackie was even then. In recent months Jackie was out of the home as often as not. She’d begun dating Edmund Washington, and told people that she was pregnant with his baby and that her father didn’t want her to have the child. Whether she is pregnant now has not been disclosed.
Just last week, Jackie had run away from home again with Washington. On Thursday night, Dan Wortham, his parents, and Jackie sat down to try to talk out their problems and see what could be done to keep Jackie at home. Jackie’s grandparents didn’t see their son alive again. When they hadn’t been able to reach Dan over the Easter weekend, the elder Worthams called police. Dan Wortham was found dead on Easter afternoon, stabbed and beaten in his East Spokane home.
Following tips from friends and neighbors, police located Jackie Wortham and Edmund Washington in a house known to be frequented by runaways. After being arrested, both Wortham and Washington confessed. Wortham admitted to doing “some of the hitting” herself with a baseball bat. Both Jackie and Edmund are being held on first degree murder charges. Washington is in big-people jail, and Jackie’s in juvie. I think she oughta be tried as an adult, myself.
UPDATE – Well, well. Jackie Wortham is being tried as an adult. There may be a little justice in the world.
