UPDATE 10/17/08 - Jesse James Campbell has been convicted of murdering his mother and will spend life in prison. Jesse beat Cindy Jo Campbell with a five pound weight, slit her throat with a steak knife, and read the Bible to her as she bled to death. At his trial, Jesse Campbell tried to pin the murder on his girlfriend, but his journal entries discussed how he’d like to kill his mom with a dull steak knife. He won’t be getting out soon.
Houtzdale, PA — Early Thursday morning, Jesse James Campbell, 20, beat his mother in the face with a five pound weight, choked her, slashed her wrists, cut her throat, then read the Bible to her as she choked on her own blood and died. Cindy Jo Coleman, 49, was found dead in the apartment she shared with her son just hours later. Her parents went to the home to check on Coleman after state police got a tip that Campbell was planning to kill her.
Jesse Campbell was mad because his mother had told him she wanted her computer back. Campbell had removed it from their apartment, and Coleman said that if he didn’t bring her computer back by 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, she was calling the police and reporting the computer stolen. Young Jesse already had a rather extensive criminal record and did not find the idea of going back to prison appealing. So instead of returning the computer, he decided instead to kill his mother. Good thinkin’, slick!
After Coleman called her son on Wednesday to give him the deadline on the stolen computer, Campbell “sat down beside me and told me he was going to kill her,” his girlfriend told police. “Jesse went out to get cigarettes. He was gone over 25 minutes, and I freaked out.” Yeah, since he took latex gloves with him and said he was going to make it look like a burglary.
When Campbell returned, he stripped off his bloody clothes and told his girlfriend that things had “gotten messy”. He recounted the crime to her, then went to take a shower and asked her to ditch his clothes, which she did.
Campbell is being held without bond in the Clearfield County Jail on criminal homicide and aggravated assault charges, although more may be forthcoming. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Mar 15, 2008 at 7:48 am -Interestingly enough, police say they’ve ruled out drugs and alcohol as being involved in this crime. So i dunno, but i’m gonna go with boy gone bad - his criminal record indicated that he’d gone through everything the juvenile system had to offer before he was 17.

Perhaps if we stretch it, we could even throw in ‘having no other Gods before me’ (the god of technology), and ‘make no graven images’ (the computer). Maybe even “Thou shalt not steal”, since he was in possession of something that wasn’t his, and he refused to give back.

I kinda wonder if the girlfriend was charged for being an accessory, as she got rid of the clothes. I bet she got a deal with the prosecution for testifying or something. Damn.
