Mar 5, 2008 at 2:44 pm -Yep. Anyone who calls Mr. Kreutz a vigilante either a) does not have a solid comprehension of the word, or b) is one of those folks who have to slap others with red-herring labels to make up for their own woeful personal inadequacies.

Mar 5, 2008 at 2:54 pm -He is/was the kind of man you pray to come and help you. The world should have more of them. Foolhearty - I don’t think so. A good man trying to help - absolutely!! A hero for trying if nothing else.

Mar 5, 2008 at 2:58 pm -Roger Kreutz was an honorable man. The snotty, overprivileged teenagers who stole that tip jarand ran over Kreutz will never understand what honor is (or manhood either, for that matter.) Do police know who was driving, the boy or the girl?

Mar 5, 2008 at 3:12 pm -Good question, since the two may have formed a plan, such as it was - she got her drink first and went out to the parking lot - I would venture, she had the car running and waiting for his thieving ass to come out. My money’s on her being the driver. I could be wrong, though.

Mar 5, 2008 at 4:13 pm -Just watched the video from the store - How stupid can you be? Oh, dear Lord, both of them on camera, for stealing a change jar. Not to mention the real crime that took place.
Ya know, if I have to go to jail for stealing - its gonna be “worth it”, just in case I do get away. Five dollars and change, didn’t even buy their gas back to the house. I’ll be able to leave the country, forever - just saying.
Was this some sort of stupid prank that went horribly wrong - surely this wasn’t a real plan to acquire money? A change jar - please. What person runs a man down for $5 and change? Were they that scared of getting caught? - which they already were - camera, Kelso. WTH?

I read these words and choked up. then tears started streaming down my face. They really affected me. It’s *so* true and for a long time, I have had the following quote in my various siglines-
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
I hope that there are good men who will deliver justice for Robert Kruetz.

Mar 5, 2008 at 7:47 pm -What pisses me off is all these so-called “security cameras” always show crappy, blurry images of these a-holes! Isn’t there better security cameras available than this? It’s like criminals know it will take time to identify them-if ever- so they don’t care. Wasn’t the guy in Florida who kidnapped/killed Carlie only caught because of his tatoos on his arm?
As for Mr. Kruetz- God bless him and his family. I don’t think he realized these POS’ would actually KILL for change in a tip jar. He was just trying to help/stall these morons. He died with more honor in his pinky than anyone who just sits and watches a crime happen has in their whole body!

Mar 5, 2008 at 8:57 pm -Yes, thank God for people such as the man who ran out to try to save the employees’ tip money. He cared about their loss and was willing to try to right a wrong. I hope I can be as brave and good should such an opportunity come to me.

Mar 5, 2008 at 9:00 pm -Let’s guess what they were doing. A young couple, fairly new to driving, so that was still exciting and grown up to them. They wanted — what? Some spending cash? Were they acting out some cool, gangsta, “I’m better than anybody” fantasy? Why this store — had a friend worked there and they were getting revenge for her/him for being fired? This all makes less than no sense.
The only thing we can assume for sure is that they had sex afterwards.
27
nurseronda
Mar 5, 2008 at 9:05 pm -Let’s hope so, because when these two get caught, they aren’t going to have sex with a person of the opposite sex in quite some time.

Mar 5, 2008 at 9:30 pm -I am so sad for this man & his family
His spur of the moment decision really shows what kind of man he was. And I wish more like him existed.
The poor guy was just standing in line for his iced latte & being the good man he obviously was cost him his life.
I hope they find those pieces of shit!
I have given this type of situation a lot of thought lately. I have been watching Primetime’s What Would You Do series. And I disappointed to admit I probably wouldn’t jump in & put myself in harms way but I guess you never know.

Mar 5, 2008 at 11:52 pm -This happened on Monday about 3 pm… I should have been at work, which is literally a stones throw from this starbucks. I stop there regularly. I was out visiting schools when this happened and was shocked when I read about it later on one of our local news websites. How sad that an innocent man, who was trying to help the workers keep what was theirs, was mowed down as they were trying to get away. The girl didn’t even pay for the coffee which was a bit over $4.00 and the tip jar contained a little over $5.00. So Roger was MURDERED for right around ONE FUCKING DOLLAR! He died surrounded by his family and friends… Where this happened is only a short distance from where the idiot gunman killed all those people in Kirkwood City Council meeting. Sad and Pathetic. Pisses me off.

Mar 6, 2008 at 8:14 am -Yes it is Imp. And that’s saying a lot in this day and age where, usually, if you can have a three sentence eulogy that so completely sums up your character, you are more likely to be a perp on DD than a victim. God bless Mr. Kreutz, and all who are like him. I think if there were more people like him there would be fewer sites like DD, and fewer asshats thinking they could get away with crap like this.

Two damn young kids have now just ruined their fucking lives, (and the life of Mr. Kreutz and his loved ones). Those two are somewhere crying like a couple fucking babies…..”I just ran over him, gosh, I weren’t trying to kill ‘em, honest, I’m not a bad person”….*add loud hysterical crying in here*
What a fucking waste.

I think, I speak for most everyone - according to their posts - we think he was a hero and wish there were more like him. Only a good man tries to do the right thing, for no other reason, than it is the right thing. God bless and keep you and the family and, I’m sure his many other friends.
Prayes to all…..

Mar 6, 2008 at 10:49 am -Great write-up, Morbid. Very inspiring last paragraphs.
I have two reactions to this story: I think this man’s sacrifice was noble to the highest degree. For one, he is a legend now. And I don’t mean that this was good because he gets 15 minutes of fame, his name is now recorded in history for being a great person. Sounds corny, but millions of people die every day without a whimper or cause. I’ll think about this guy, on and off, for the rest of my life. Just like the lady who sued McDonalds for their hot coffee will always be a mythical creature of pettiness and ignorance, this man will be an iconic example of sacrificing yourself for noble principles.
The other reason this man’s sacrifice is noble, in my opinion, is that he demonstrates how any crime, no matter how petty, can quickly ramp up to the worst results. The “fight or flight” instinct is powerful, no matter what scenario triggers it. And the more we tolerate these little crimes, the more we learn to shrug our shoulders at the general madness of the world.
Too often, the consequences of our lazy morality are not brought into focus. We speed in our cars, we run stopsigns and stoplights, we talk on the phone and fiddle with the radio, we stock our homes with dangerous weapons, we smoke around our kids, we ignore our seatbelts, we have a few drinks before we drive home. And the real result of these actions adds up to hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths. But we don’t see them all at once. They aren’t bleeding in the Starbuck’s parking lot. They are just “numbers” and “statistics”.

Mar 6, 2008 at 11:24 am -I agree with that Swivel - I didn’t realize just how much I am putting myself in the realm of the possibility of being an unintentional murderer. Yet, unintentional or not, I would be a murderer.
With the exception of smoking around my kid or any others for that matter - I don’t do that.
One question, though, are you referring to guns when you say “we dangerous stock our homes with dangerous weapons”? If so, I would have to disagree. Granted there are stupid people who shouldn’t have guns. There are others that have guns and leave them readily available to children or would be intruders - both of those I whole heartedly disagree with.
BUT, I believe everyone responsible person should have a gun in their home. Escpecially, single women with children or even without. I have carried a pistol since I was 17 - don’t even start with you weren’t old enough, and it wasn’t legal, that’s irrelevant now, as I am in my 30’s - and I had a damn good reason to start carrying at 17. No, I did not purchase the gun, at that age. It was given to me by someone who loved me and did not want to see anymore bad things occur in my life. They provided me the means to make sure it never happened again.
The point is - it is my/your right - and if you do have children - it is your responsibility to be able to protect yourself, your home, and most inportantly your children. I cannot and will not view me owning a gun and having several in my home, as moral laziness.
If there is an intruder and I save my family, I have been a responsible person, who did not break any laws and most importantly, me and my family will not be read about for being murdered on here nor will we be statistics.

Mar 6, 2008 at 1:10 pm -The only reason you and I need a gun in our home is because we live in a country chock-FULL of guns. That’s why we have a MUCH higher homicide rate per capita than any other developed country. Despite the fact that our overall crime rate is the same. It is the same argument that countries use to develop and maintain a nuclear arsenal.
If you go look at the comparisons between states and countries with varying degrees of gun-ownership you will understand the sad fact: We are killing each other and ourselves in a pointless race with the bad-guys that gets us nothing but heartache.
Of course, it would be pointless for YOU, as a lone household, to de-arm, because nobody else would. Which is why we need changes to our laws to gradually diminish the number of guns on the market. Attack guns the way we are attacking cigarettes. I think people have a primal attachment to their arms, and they appeal to a document that ignored slavery and women’s rights as an objective moral authority.
An intelligent person will own a gun today, and do everything in their power to ensure that guns will go away in the future. What dumb people do is one of two things: 1. Say we don’t need guns in our current gun-culture. or 2. Work towards ensuring that our current gun culture only gets worse.
I have no respect or time for the idiots from either of those camps. The reality is something in-between, and requires but a few moments of honest reflection.

Mar 6, 2008 at 1:50 pm -How do you dispute the fact, when a town made all of its homeowners keep guns, the crime rates dropped dramatically? I will have to go through each and every thread on here as to find the name of that town and get my statistics. I and some other posters had covered this in another thread on here.
How do you dispute the fact when, other countries have disarmed their citizens, their crime rates increased by an unbelievable amount? - again in the same thread - but I’m thinking someone said something like 200% crime rate increase. And, again, I will have to find my facts to support this argument.
And if we remove guns from our society, people like myself, which are law abiding citizens, for the most part (not counting speeding or tuning the radio in my car), the criminals will still have guns, as they do not acquire their guns as I do - buying a permit and purchasing them legally. I certainly do not want the criminals or the police to be the only ones who have guns - as the police are many times, far worse than a lot of criminals.
And I have explained vaguely many times, that sometimes things happen to women because a man is simply stronger than her - but if she has a gun she can stop her attacker. Are you suggesting that a perfect world would be one with no guns, so that woman can be defenseless against a stronger man to be raped, abused or murdered with his bare hands?
A lot of rapists, do not use any type of weapon, just there sheer overpowering strength. Why would you want to leave your mom or sister or daughter defenseless against that type of attack? GUNS DO HAVE A PLACE IN OUR SOCIETY!
When guns no longer are needed, all raping, abuse, and murder will have been completely eradicated - the crimes must be stopped before citizens are expected to leave themselves vulnerable to such violent attacks.
I don’t ever see those types of crimes being eradicated - so in turn, I don’t feel anyone should ever be expected to be defenseless against violent crime.

Mar 6, 2008 at 2:03 pm -Kreutz, 54, died Wednesday at a hospital, two days after he was struck.
“I don’t claim to understand it,” police Chief Mike Paillou said at a news conference. He said detectives are following up on leads but asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspects. He did not know what provoked them - “fear, confusion, being young?”
It’s believed there was about $5 in the tip jar.
Family members weren’t surprised Kreutz went after the thieves.
“He was just caring, loving, witty and extremely loyal,” said his youngest brother, Chris Kreutz, 42. “That’s how my brother is. I would have done the same thing.”

Mar 6, 2008 at 7:16 pm -The name of that town (and state) is Kennesaw, Georgia. And the reason they give for the decrease in crime, is that if a criminal knows for a fact that a person has a gun, he is less likely to try his luck in that home. He would rather go to a house in another city where the chances of the homeowner being unarmed are greater, and therefore diminish the risk to himself. Common sense. Even criminals have it to a certain degree it seems…..
