Anthony Case

Houston, TX – Early Friday morning, panic struck in northwest Houston. James Potts, 20, lay dead, and James’ girlfriend Ashley struggled for her life. The motive? Nobody’s sure, but it may be the $900 in cash Case took with him when he left Potts’ apartment.

Dreamin’ Demon has the exclusive from one of our own sources. She is a friend who is close to the case, whose life and family have been upended by this weekend’s tragedy. We have been given exclusive information that has not been released to the press. The reason for our interview? Justice for James Potts, and justice for James’ girlfriend Ashley, who will bear the scars of her attack forever.

Anthony Case turned 20 on February 21. Just a week later, he became a murderer. On Thursday night, February 28, Anthony had spent the night with a friend. Earlier in the evening Anthony had stolen the friend’s cell phone and truck keys, hiding them, but the friend didn’t notice. The friend, his young wife and their small child had gone to bed. Anthony, a longtime friend who stayed at the home often, wasn’t asleep. Instead, he was plotting two murders and a frame job.

Sometime later, Anthony left the apartment and went to another apartment just two buildings away, the home of mutual friend James Potts and James’ girlfriend Ashley. How Case got into the home is unclear, but once he did, Case attacked Potts, stabbing him more than 32 times. Ashley began to scream, so Case grabbed her by the hair, jerked her head back and slit her throat. Our source says that “…when she still struggled, he stabbed her twice in the back and then went to cut her throat yet again, this time she slipped in his grip, and the knife went into her mouth, and he slit her from her mouth to her ear… at which point, she played dead.”

Ashley waited for Case to leave. Still in shock and bleeding heavily, she managed to get out of the second-floor apartment and go to another unit to get help. Police arrived at 2:30 on FridayFriday reviewsFriday reviews morning and Ashley was able to tell them that it was Case who had done the stabbing. Police located Case by tracing the friend’s stolen cell phone. Case was found walking down a road nearby. During interviews with police, Case found out that Ashley was alive and had named him. He then confessed to James Potts’ murder and the attempted murder of Ashley, who is undergoing treatment at a Houston hospital.

Anthony Case is being held in the Harris County jail on murder charges. Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of James Potts, to Ashley and her family, and to the family of our source. As we at Dreamin’ Demon know all too well, sometimes your best friends turn out to be your worst enemies.

So much pain and bloodshed for what … 900 bucks? Too sad. I hope Mr. Case is clued in to the fact, and soon, that a life is worth much more than a few hundred bucks.

Because she was wet with blood, I’ll bet.

Disgusting, disgusting story. I wonder if this guy has any history of violence or criminal activity. Horrible.

As far as I know, not really. This seems to have come a bit out of the blue.

Ok, bleary-eyed here from working on graduate papers all day, so I’ll admit that RUBY = DENSE right now.

How was Case’s stealing a truck and cell phone going to frame someone else for the crime? I don’t understand. I figured he just took ‘em so he could go on the lam.

    ’splain please….

Just a guess on my part, but maybe it was because he was counting on someone seeing his friend’s truck at the scene of the crime, and thereby being suspected of the assault. Anyone else have a hypothesis?

I would have to agree with you Angel. I can just picture someone hearing the screams from the apartment, seeing a person run out of said apartment and climbing into a pickup truck. Maybe they get lucky and see the license plate. Either way, not exactly the brightest idea I’ve heard of.

    Thanks for the conjecture.

I guess my question is really directed at Imp, as the author of the article, which seems to clearly state more than once that the intent was a frameup. CLearly she knows something which I am not successfully grok’ing from the article.

    Can you share, Imp?

If the guy had his own vehicle, then it would seem strange for him to take his friends car. But if he didn’t, then I could see him stealing the truck and phone for no other reason than to take off.

I am waiting to see how they found him. If he still had the truck and phone, and it was not left at the scene, that is one shitty frame-up. I am thinking, going on the fact that he was willing to kill two people for 900 dollars, that he was stealing the phone and truck.

We will see, though. I still find it hard to grasp that this guy killed two friends in such a manner…for 900 dollars. I mean, we have heard stranger so it is not out of the realm of possibilities, but still. Seems sort of extreme when he could have just stole the money and left.

Anthony does have a previous felony. He was being stopped once and ran from the police, and when he was caught he was in possession of cocaine.

How was Case’s stealing a truck and cell phone going to frame someone else for the crime? I don’t understand. I figured he just took ‘em so he could go on the lam.

I hadn’t thought of a frame intent really… But using a loud as hell truck with a very distinct custom paint job wasn’t the smartest move as a get away vehicle.. also Ashleys car has been missing since then too, and no one knows yet where it is… Anthony may have told the police, but none of the friends know.

Anthony, after leaving the scene, went to his cousins house in Houston and told them he had been jumped and that he stabbed some one during the fight… (to explain the blood all over him). The next morning, he took the stollen truck to a local mall, and parked it and left walking. He was traced through the cell phone, and moments later, he was on face down on the ground being read his rights…

Edited by imp to reflect corrections in my information:

Might not have been a frame job at all, so I’ve edited the article. My original information looked like a frame job to me, but that’s changed, so.. meh. Maybe, maybe not. I suppose Case’s defense will argue stupidity, and the prosecution is unlikely to pursue other charges based on the murder he’ll be tried for, so it comes out in the wash — unless you’re the friend whose truck and cell phone got stolen, in which case I’d be seriously angry at that kind of betrayal.

On the other hand, if there was cocaine or methamphetamine involved, who knows what the kid was thinking.

  14. WryBread

That’s why it looks like a frame to me. A poor one, to be sure, but there ya go. His defense will argue no frameup and stupidity, and the prosecution is unlikely to pursue it based on the other charges he’ll be tried for, so it comes out in the wash — unless you’re the friend, in which case I’d be seriously angry at that kind of betrayal.

Yeah, I’d be seriously angry enough to be outside the jail when he’s served his time — which will be about four years in today’s sentencing climate — and beat the shit out of him.

This guy has to have the i.q. of a waste basket. What a lousy frame-up plan.

What’s scary to me is that had Ashley died, the police might well have been busting into our source’s son’s apartment, asking a lot of scary questions – especially since Ashley’s vehicle, which was later discovered missing, would not have immediately been reported stolen. Case was found on foot, so there are some unanswered questions there – but leaving the knife in his friend’s truck, which was only moved a short distance, is pretty low.

It might not have been the best frame, but it could have bought Case hours, if not a day or two. Fortunately, Ashley was alive when Case left and was still conscious and able to give police information despite her knife wounds, which sound pretty heinous. Her condition is reported as stable this morning.

Case and Potts weren’t really friends. They partied together a hand full of time, through a mutual friend. They knew each other, but weren’t like, friends.

Potts was 20. He was still a little young and invincible. He kept most of his money in the bank, however he was a little flashy with his Tupac, money clip that everyone knew he always kept 900.00 in and had on him at all times. Something he had been warned about.

Case has stollen before. As I’ve said, he used to live with my son last year. That ended when Anthony stole a few hundred dollars from him, and split.

They hadn’t spoken since then, until early this year. I’m not sure if it was the end of January, or February. Anthony called him and said how sorry he was for how shit had went down and that he wanted to pay him back what he took and try to get their friendship back. So, it’s not unthinkable that he would steal money from an friend of a friend..

I think there is more to it to. As I said on the forum, he was said to have come into the apartment and told some one that had just got off work, that he was pissed off and he was going to kill Potts. The person mistakenly just thought he was talking shit and blew him off. So, I think there had been some type of altercation before hand that set him off. However that said… he was at the apartment for about an hour before he went back and killed Potts. So, it wasn’t an explosive spur of the moment thing… he had time to cool off and think about it, but instead of cooling off he decided to follow up on his threat.

As for just taking the money, Potts had no kids in his apartment, so he didn’t have to be careful with what was laying around. Everyone knew he had a double bladed dagger on his coffee table, and kept a hatchet between his couch cushions.

Also, I went back and checked the forum, and I guess it could have been confusing, because I say He and his alot.. and it could have been misunderstood which he I meant.. so let me say here, Anthony left Potts apartment, and put the knife in his own truck. It wasn’t left in my sons truck. He left in my sons truck, and went to his cousins and spent the night. The following morning, he drove my sons truck to the mall.. and was walking from the mall when he was arrested which was somewhere around 9AM or later.

We still have no idea where Ashleys car is, or how it fits in. But it was there during the late night, and gone the next morning.

That being the case, it may not have been a frameup at all, but just a stupid murder. I was confused when you said your son’s truck had been taken in as evidence, and the murder weapon thing wasn’t clear, but I have it straight now, I think. I’ll edit the article.

From what I see on the records there is only one charge against Anthony, of murder. I dont get why he dont have an attempted murder charge also for Ashley.

Anyways, this little prick is a cold hearted brutal killer. He left the scene and just went to his cousins to hang out and went to sleep as if nothing had happened. It’s just so scary for me to think he could have just as easily went back to my sons and killed them all in their sleep too. I hope he never gets out!

I’m guessing they took the truck in because there is alot of DNA evidence in the truck. Anthony had to have alot of blood on him when he left and I’m sure alot of that was left in the truck. I think they just always want to cover all the bases, and have all ends tied up for a solid case.

I’m pretty sure when he gets the truck back from impound, he’s going to sell it. he says he just dont think he’ll be able to drive it now. Which really sucks because it meant so much to him being from his Nana.

Did I meantion how much I hate this Little prick Anthony, and I hope he never gets out!

I was just told that pic was actually from his previous arrest, and he was strung out on meth.

I wish I had a picture of Potts. But I can tell you he was a really good looking kid. They actually teased him all the time because he looked so much like Justin Timberlake. They’d tell him, “man, you’re being sexy back in style” and just laugh. He really was a beautiful young man. This is such a heart breaking tragedy.

I just cant wait to hear what his sentence is. I can tell you this, I’m really afraid for my sons safety when (if) he is released. I’m not even really sure of his safety now, since I know Anthony has a sister that last I knew she was living with a man that had just been released from prison.

    Lessons from this..

If you carry large amounts of cash all the time, dont flash it around. Someone will kill you for it.

be very careful who you choose as your friends. At one point Anthony was named my granddaughters Godfather!

I’m just sick over this. I dont even recall the last time I felt this much hate and rage about someone.

The pic i’m using is the only one Harris County has released, and yeah, he does look a bit spun.

Thing is, if he was using meth before, he’s using it now, and he was probably using it when he went in there to kill James and nearly killed Ashley. Methamphetamine is one of the most addictive substances on the planet, and possibly the single most violence-triggering. Meth makes angel dust look like a gateway drug. A little pot and some Xandy-bars are not gonna help you go in and kill someone – a little meth will.

There was Potts’ apartment, another one, and my sons. They are all together almost all the time the 5 of them. When I was there, they were all crying and hurting so bad, and so angry.

As a mommy, we kiss boo boos and make them all better. It’s just really hard to see kids all hurting so bad, and nothing you can say or do is going to take away the pain they are going through.

As well as the pain of all the other friends of Potts, and Ashley. And the fact that I had known Anthony, and last year, he spent almost every holiday at my home, with my family. Now I’m just sick over it. He is the first cold blooded murderer I’ve known personally, and well.. yeah I’m just sick.

Here is the partial text of an email I received from a person who asked not to be identified:

“….My son and daughter were close friends of James, (he preferred to be called Chris or Potts) and Ashley. They have been to my apartment many, many times and have always called me mom. This is such a stupid tragedy and it makes absolutely no sense. There are many inconsistencies in what is being said, but that is generally the case with any story. Potts did not always have $900.00 in a money clip. There were many times they were without money and washed clothes at my house to have clean clothes. All of the kids who knew Chris are hurting and it is such a tragedy that they have to go through this. Many of Chris’ friends also went through a death of one of their other friends a few months back when he was killed instantly in a car wreck in Katy. These kids were just started getting their life straightened out from that shock to only get hit with another blow. If you can post some of this for me it would be appreciated …. Also let the kids know that any of them who were at my house for Bubba’s wake are welcomed back at anytime, I love them all as if they were my own kids…”

I’m curious as to how this guy who was known thief got access to all these young people’s lives. Why was he even tolerated? Was this a college crowd who hung out? Or had they all been in high school together? Isn’t stealing and using meth a sort of warning flag to people any more? Just curious because I don’t really understand the situation.

jealousy? anger? retribution? – what? meth will fuck you up but there has to be some deep down disorder for this kind of incredible brutality. Stabbing is such an intimate crime, in that you have to get real close, risk a struggle, get blood on you – actually feel what you are doing. And 32 times? pure rage. The history is interesting – prior serious drug abuse and theft. I’m sure there’s lot’s more to come out. My condolences to family and friends of Chris, and a prayer of absent healing for Ashley.

I’d love to hear some comment on this. Why was this guy running around in these people’s lives? I’m not judging, just can’t figure why anyone would let him hang around given the meth conviction and the stealing — tolerance going too far? I think those are real warning flags.

From everything I’ve read on here, all of the young adults who hung out together seemed to have a larger than normal dose of concern and empathy – probably due in large part to having had parents who actually gave a damn, and raised them to be productive members of society. Therefore, it would not surprise me at all if they thought they might be able to help this guy straighten out his life. They may have thought that if he saw and spent time with enough good people, that it might influence him to try to improve his own life. Too bad it didn’t work out that way……some broken things just can’t be fixed.

I’m so sorry for your loss. In no way have any of us said anything bad about your brother. He is a victim here, as is Ashley as far as my information goes. If my information is wrong, please let us know so we can get it right.

Again, I’m so sorry your brother died. It’s horrible, and nothing we could say would make it better, but know that many of us are thinking of you and hoping you’ll be okay.

Casey, my prayers go out to you, and I think all of us here wish for justice for you and your family. I’m so sorry you are having to go through this horrible ordeal.
