Shawn Munck

Broome County, NY – Shawn Munck, 22, was supposed to be caring for his twelve- year-old brother Peter last week while their grandmother was hospitalized for open-heart surgery. But on Tuesday evening the brothers had an altercation, and Shawn Munck stomped on the sixth-grader’s midsection. Sometime later that night, Peter Munck died.

Shawn Munck didn’t call 911 or try to get help for his little brother. In fact, he left Peter’s body in a bedroom for three days. Peter’s school had been concerned about Peter’s absence from school because they knew that the boy’s custodial grandmother was in the hospital. After being unable to get an answer at the home, the school reached another family member who went to the home and found Peter dead.

Investigators say that Shawn and Peter Muncks had been raised by their grandmother at least since 2000, as both their parents are in prison. The grandmother is recovering from heart surgery and had not been told of her grandson’s death by SundaySunday reviewsSunday reviews morning.

Police sources say that Shawn Muncks panicked after stomping his brother and did not seek help because he was concerned about the consequences.

A friend of Shawn Munck’s, Joe Menard, 23, was in the house in a different room at the time of the incident. He said he heard the boys just “horsing around”, and said he left the home that night with no idea anything was wrong. But Shawn Munck went to stay with Menard “for a few days” after the incident, returning to the home on SaturdaySaturday reviewsSaturday reviews. Menard told press that Shawn Munck didn’t say that Peter was dead, but Menard didn’t say whether he’d asked where the child was or whether Shawn had volunteered other information.

Munck has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and is being held without bail at the Broome County jail.

Ok Shawn...so he had his this old injury from 5 years prior that was soooo sensitive that anything could re-open it, but yet you've admitted on other forums that you guys horse play around a lot and the injury never re-opened before? You also claimed in one post he got injured right before he died from falling on ice on his way home from school. I'm sorry but you are full of shit and I don't buy anything you say.

Just had to throw that out there.

-- A mixed verdict for a Town of Union man on trial for the death of his little brother. It took a jury just under four hours to find Shawn Munck not guilty of second degree manslaughter and assault, but they did find him guilty of criminally negligent homicide

Cant say i can go through a day w/o thinking of my brother peter.

But the reason i'm posting is i wanna set a few things straight.

    he had a prior injury that was caused at school that no one new about until after the autopsy info {he fell with his hand to his solar plexus, and was sent to the hospital for a sprained wrist, and his stomach was sensitve but didnt bother him. this was 5 years ago.}

he didnt have any broken ribs, or i would have done something. i only stayed at joe's place the night he was found. not 3 days.

he always hangs out inhis room so i though, and i dont think joe thought anything of it at the time.

his injury was so sensitive that falling would reopen it. so in light of all this i take responsibilty for anything i might of done to hurt him unintentionally. for i didnt know he had such a injury until after he died.

i'll regret this for the rest of my life.

I really don’t get leaving Peter’s body in the house to rot for days. That’s just one I can’t get around. I think Joe Menard had to have known something was up, since he didn’t seem to ask or care where Peter was during that time. And i have no idea who could have done this if not Shaun, unless you think Joe did it.

Growing up my brothers used to "practice" wrestling moves on each other among other forms of abuse. It could have been an accident, what turns it into manslaughter for me is leaving the kid without getting help regardless of who, why etc... He has royally fucked up and now his little brother is dead.
  • When I first was told about this I literally couldn’t believe it. I’m not saying that he couldn’t do it but given what I know of him and his relationship with his brother I can’t see him doing something like that to the extant needed to injure Peter. I’m sure Peter would have let him know if he was in pain and Shaun would have stopped. It would not surprise me if Shaun was covering someone else thinking it was all an accident and the authorities would treat it as such

I could buy that it was an accident. If they were horsing around and playing, and Shaun stomped his brother a lot harder than he meant to, that could result in the broken rib that lacerated Peter's liver, which I am pretty sure is how he bled to death internally later that night. Shaun may not have realized how hurt Peter was, but believe me, broken ribs HURT. He should have gotten Peter to a hospital, because Peter would have been crying and having a hard time breathing from the pain.

Suralon, if you're right and Shaun is protecting the real killer, I sure hope someone convinces him that this is the wrong course to take. From what you say, I can tell that you care about him and have thought about his chances in life. Thank you for sharing this here.
  • Suralon
I thought I would comment here as I know/knew most of the individuals concerned personally. I have known Shaun for probably 3 or 4 years now and this horror came as a surprise to me. I had found him to be a friendly if somewhat passive person. Shaun wanted to be liked and did what he could could "fit in"and be accepted. His myspace site was mostly copied or put there by friends of his.

Another example of this was the time he took the blame for a friend's bicycle being stolen. The real perp later confessed. To be liked he would do things like that. He would hangout with whoever would let him which lead to some unfortunate choices, one of which lead to the bicycle incident.

Shaun could never be said to a genius, I never saw him actually express any viciousness towards anyone much less his little brother whom I met a few times when I went over to the house on Hastings to leave Shaun off. Once to pick up a futon that I had bought off of Joe Menard that he had left there.

Shaun actually had job until recently and and had moved out of his grandmother"s. Sadly he lost it somehow and had to move back in. It has only been since then that he has been so depressed and unshaven.

When I first was told about this I literally couldn't believe it. I'm not saying that he couldn't do it but given what I know of him and his relationship with his brother I can't see him doing something like that to the extant needed to injure Peter. That poor kid. What a horrendously painful way to die.

I've got a paragraph out of whack there--the last two small paragraphs should be within the quote marks from the newspaper article.

When I was a kid and we were stationed in DC (late 70s), there was a missing boy case that was in all the papers for days. It turned out that the brothers were home alone, and either through roughhousing or a fight, the youngest brother had been killed by the others by being hit over the head with a statue. (I think they said they'd been playing, but being hit with a statue isn't the same as accidentally falling and hitting your head on the table.) After several days the brothers finally confessed, and they found the kid buried in the back yard, I think. (Although...if your kid is missing, don't you notice signs of fresh digging in the backyard? So maybe I'm not remembering that correctly.)

Anyway, that was the first time I ever realized that children could just disappear, and that case has always stayed with me. But at least in that case, all of the brothers were school-age and probably didn't realize the consequences, not an adult assaulting a child.

    Sorry to double-post...

    http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008802170354

    excerpts:

"Teachers at M-E Middle School described Peter as a quiet, inquisitive, perpetually happy boy.

Matthew Gallagher, a sixth-grade social studies teacher, didn't have Peter in class, but could always count on a greeting from him in the hallway.

"It's just a shame," said Gallagher. "He was awesome ... he was always smiling."

Mary Materese taught Peter's advanced math class. She said he was the rare type of sixth-grader who enjoyed math and thought about it, even away from the classroom."

    and

"Shawn Munck, the Veselys said, was markedly anti-social. He always wore a hood, they said, which half covered his face. He would step outside the Hastings Avenue house to smoke cigarettes and never looked up to acknowledge the neighbors. He didn't have a job, police said.

On his MySpace page, Shawn Munck wrote in 2005, under the heading "who I'd like to meet: The members of HIM (a Finnish metal band) and meet up with my dad once again."

His father, Erik Munck, has been in state prison since 1999, serving a 10- to 12-year sentence for attempted burglary, criminal possession of a weapon and attempted assault."

On the forum right below the article, there is this interesting post:

"I was Shaun's foster mother many years ago and am familiar with the family. I am sure that this was not intentional but the children should never have been given to the grandmother. They found her unfit years ago and I doubt anything changed. She was not a good parent or a responsile grandparent.
My heart goes out to Shaun and his sister Cara." Another says, "This 22 year old man is seriously disturbed and has been known to constantly abuse his little brother and sister since they were small children. His intent was most likely to hurt his brother badly."

Something about this case reminds me of the case in Iowa where the son killed his parents and sisters (another Shawn). While the family circumstances were vastly different, it seems like in both of them, you have one loser sibling who maybe can't stand the fact that the other children in the family have some drive and might make something of themselves.

Shawn Munck also wrote about himself: "broken, scarred and hopeless ... that pretty much summarizes me."

The two boys have an older sister who no longer lives at the Hastings Avenue address; she attends college in Buffalo.
  • Would the house not stink after 3 days? Didn’t Menard smell a decaying body? There’s no way he couldn’t have known, unless their house normally smells like all hell broke loose.

Shawn Munck went to stay at Menard's apartment, so they weren't in the house with the body. Shawn just left his little brother there to rot.

"Neighbors say Munck is not a Stranger to Trouble"

    excerpt:
"...FOX 40 spoke to neighbors in the area this weekend who say Shawn Munck has been in and out of prison before. Sheriffs would not confirm if Munck has prior convictions but they are investigating his past."

I wonder if the neighbors are confusing this guy with his parents? 22 seems kind of young to be "in and out of prison"--juvie, maybe. Or in and out once. But it sounds like the neighbors mean multiple times. Or maybe they actually mean in and out of jail? I guess it wouldn't surprise me, though...he's clearly a loser. Can you go "in and out of prison" a bunch of times between 18 and 22? I don't know a lot about the actual prison system. (Clearly.)

    elf like : yes !

menard had to know something, whats with 2nd degree murder ?
first thought from the news page, was that the family had enough to worry about and this probably did stop the womans heart.

she had custody since 2000 almost 8 yrs both parents are in prison for what OMG that is a long time...

did the boy need a reason to see his father, wonder if they will be housed together... at least he is aware of the rules ahead of time.

menard needs a lie detector test - hope he stops by here !

Man, this dude is freakish looking. He looks elf like. Fuck, his lawyer is surely preparing a wonderful insanity plea for this asshat. I do not understand how one human can be so cruel to another. Holy shit.

Psionic stuff, including the ebook, "How to Be a Psionics Vampire."

And a quote from the site's page: "Never forget that right and wrong are false ideas, born of the fetid imaginings of those whose only desire is to have all men conform to their ways. The desire to act is the only justification the action ever needs."

I wonder if that last line guided Shawn's stomping behavior?
  • so he was into RPGs and had trouble delineating fantasy vs. reality - that will help his defense, if anything.

I just think that Menard had to know something was up. And how the hell does someone leave their dead little brother to rot for three days??

if you put his picture next to Travis Mullis' pic, it's bizarre how alike they look. That stomping thing might be in the DNA.

Hey, look... shithead has two friends! And practices psionics.

Love the MySpace headline "I'm a loser, what else do you want me to say?"
Being a loser is only part of this POS problem. I'm guessing this wasn't the first time he was violent with his little brother.
I feel so bad for Grandma. I think you're probably right, Colomom. This could just kill her.

So Menard knew Grandma was in the hospital, but didn't inquire about the little boy when big brother spent a few DAYS at his house. What can be said about that? Are these people so stupid they don't put together, "Big brother here -- who feed little brother?" Or are they so drug-damaged that they can't think this through?
