UPDATE 10/08/08 - Sharon Twocrows and Chasity Kubie were each sentenced to seven years in prison for their roles in the abuse of Twocrows’ four-year-old grandson. The seven-year sentences were the maximum allowed under Missouri law for a single count of felony child abuse. Twocrows and Kubie pled guilty in June. Paul Kubie will face a jury trial on December 18. He is being tried on four charges of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of child abuse, all Class C felony charges punishable by up to seven years in prison per count.
It’s not justice, but it’s something.

Joplin, MO - Sharon Twocrows, 50, is a nurse and a grandmother. Her son Paul Kubie, 27, is a Navy recruiter. Paul’s wife Chasity Kubie, 26, is a stay-at-home mother and aunt. They all live together with the Kubie’s two daughters and two nephews. And now, they’re all in the Newton County jail together, facing multiple felony charges for child abuse and endangerment.
A well-timed hot line call sent Newton County sheriff’s deputies and DFS workers to the south Joplin home at 8:10 a.m. Monday. Authorities found a 4-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl and a 4-month-old girl inside the home with no running water and three toilets full of unflushed feces. There were trash piles in every room. The kitchen counters and sink were full dirty dishes and rotting food. All the children were taken into protective custody, along with the 4-year-old’s 5-year-old brother, who was found at school.
Most of the abuse charges center on the 4-year-old boy. He and his brother were the Kubie’s nephews and Twocrows’ grandsons. One parent is incarcerated; the other is dead. When the 4-year-old was removed from his home and taken to a hospital on Monday, he weighed 22 pounds, 8 ounces.
When hospital nurses started feeding the child, he ate all of it and asked for more until his nurses worried he might make himself sick. Not only was the child starving, several bruises were of concern - including some that looked like restraint marks. The little boy told how “sometimes” he got to eat “with everyone else.” But when he was in trouble, he had to stand on his bed while the everyone else ate. When the hungry child got up in the middle of the night to find food, his grandmother and aunt started tying him “good and tight” to his bed at night with grandma’s white nursing-shoe shoestrings.
Sometimes he got “spanked” with a belt or paddle by his grandma and uncle. And sometimes that left marks as well. All the allegations were confirmed by the adults or the older boy in the home. In addition, the older boy reported being beaten, and the 2-year-old girl, the Kubie’s daughter, had a bruise on her lower back in the shape of a running shoe. Nice parenting, that.
Twocrows was charged with four counts of felony child endangerment and two counts of felony child abuse. The Kubies both face four counts of felony endangerment and a count of child abuse. Chasity Kubie faces an additional count of child abuse The Kubies and Twocrows were being held Wednesday in the Newton County Jail on $250,000 bond each.
On a personal note, I really hope that Sheriff Copeland and the Newton County boys rip this family up in the courtroom. Newton County’s dealt with quite enough in the last year between church shootings and Rowan Ford’s murder.
UPDATE 5/29/08 - Paul Kubie will be arraigned on Monday, June 9, in Newton County Circuit Court. Chasity Kubie waived a pretrial hearing in March and was bound over for trial. She has a pretrial conference on June 16. Interestingly, her name is being spelled “Chastity” in some news outlets, but the court documents at Missouri’s Casenet have her as “Chasity”, so I’m gonna go with that.
Sharon Twocrows also waived her preliminary hearing in March, and was bound over for trial. Her pretrial conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 2. All three defendants will go before Judge Tim Perigo in Newton County. C’mon, Newton County - throw down one for justice on this case. (Note: Her case has been continued until June 16.)
UPDATE 6/19/08 - After two continuances in pre-trial, Sharon Twocrows pled guilty yesterday to two counts of felony child abuse and four counts of felony child endangerment. She will be sentenced on July 17, 2008. Paul and Chasity Kubie have been bound over for trial in Newton County.

Feb 8, 2008 at 10:31 am -Damn! I couldn’t figure out where I thought I knew her from.
Besides the fact that they obviously abused these children physically, how fucking lazy do you have to be to live in a place like that. I bet that house reeked!! No running water? How did Ms. Twocrows get all that black dye in her hair?

Kids are abused and killed daily. Just because someone wrote a story well enough that it got picked up by the MSM doesn’t make our state worse than others.

Feb 8, 2008 at 1:04 pm -I didn’t get this one from the MSM, even - I got it from the Joplin Globe. Although we did get a tip about this story after I’d had it mostly written from a smart reader, too
Newton County has had its share of rough cases this year. It’s the meth, mostly. Missouri has two faces: the community where I live has one of the highest rated school systems in the United States and almost no crime. Missouri has had many communities rated as the best places to raise kids. It’s the methamphetamine and redneck-fueled underbelly that’s scary. And often, the two aren’t separated by much except money and a few miles.
It’s no different than any other state, really.

Feb 8, 2008 at 1:35 pm -TwoCrows’ name needs to be changed to OneAsshole. What a look on her face. Sonny doesn’t look bright enough to breed. And Chastity — why would anyone name their child after sexual abstinence?
Sick how some families smooth over their differences by abusing one child. Everyone can agree that naughty child has to stand on the bed and watch the GOOD family bond by eating together. God knows what these children have been taught is normal behavior.
And she’s a nurse! God grant me death before I come under her care!

Feb 8, 2008 at 1:54 pm -Yes, folks, this guy is a Navy recruiter. And Chasity’s parents couldn’t spell well enough to name her after abstinence or even after Sonny and Cher’s kid. She’s named after misspelled abstinence.
Right now that’s really funny to me.

Some people should be pelted to death with their own sh*t before they should be allowed to have kids.
Seems like here that would be a fitting punishment

Feb 8, 2008 at 2:23 pm -I can’t figure out Chasity. Is she making a face or does she have the asymmetrical face thing going on?
20
WryBread
Feb 8, 2008 at 7:26 pm -I like that idea. But they’ll have to pelt themselves. I won’t touch it! Having to pelt yourself to death with your own shit has got to be a memorable punishment. Should be carried out in public, too.
I had noticed that Mom and Son have a droopy left side of their mouths, and Chas has a droopy right side. But now that you mention it, Chas’ raised right eyebrow mirrors Mom’s hooked left eyebrow. Is this a search for biological balance among the asymmetrical — or is Chas just a people pleaser?

Feb 8, 2008 at 8:48 pm -Number one, being a Nurse myself, this one bothered me so I checked and this woman is not listed on the Mo. Board of Nursing as ever having a license. Number two, no woman who calls herself a grandmother would ever act like this if she was a caring nurse. I just don’t understand some people, how can they treat their children with this much hate? I don’t want to hear that the devil made them do it. They all need broom handles run up their bottoms and broken off….never mind…..I am a nurse and shouldn’t think this way!

Feb 8, 2008 at 11:14 pm -she might work for Oxford and a lot of people consider them “nurses” even tho they arent. But they wear scrubs so most make that mistake. My shack-up -inlaw works for Oxford and people are always asking what kind of nurse she is. But these are pretty piss poor people to do that to kids. Hell my kids were at 22 pounds before they were two.

Feb 8, 2008 at 11:24 pm -I checked that too, and you’re right. Sharon Twocrows actually works for a nursing home in Webb City, MO. They are not happy about being called to ask for her job title
The family moved to Missouri not long ago, but I’m not sure from where - so the facility may be letting her practice pending reciprocal licensure, or else she’s working as a CMT or CNA and just told the police she worked as a nurse. Or police saw the scrubs and assumed. My brother had worked at that facility at one time, and says they are very lax in their hiring practices, so she may be practicing without a MO license.
But she is working in either a nursing or other patient care capacity, so whatever her actual title, she’s even more abhorrent a human being. If she does this to her grandchildren, what the hell is she doing to her patients?

wtf is wrong with people? seriously… are these people clinically insane? a 4 year old child is defenseless! and there is NO 4 year old on the face of this earth that deserves to be abused! HOLY SHIT!
oh good christ. can we PLEASE go back to “an eye for an eye”? I mean, back when we had real laws and real punishment, nobody ever heard of this bullshit happening. who in the living hell would tie a child down to keep him from eating? ok i am seriously sitting here, in tears and pissed off. it wouldn’t do for me to get anywhere near those pieces of shit.
i’d like to “spank” them with a maglite. across the face. until i decided they got the point.

And I would love to send a thank you gift to whomever called them. and plaster their name all over the damned place as a hero in the matter. good lord, can you imagine the mental abuse and torture those kids will continue to endure from the post-traumatic-stress-disorder they are bound to suffer from? this kind of shit will fuck their heads up for life!

A Newton County judge rejects the plea agreement of a grandmother who admitted to endangering her grandchildren. Now, Sharon Twocrows will go to trial.
Last month Twocrows pled guilty to multiple counts of child endangerment and abuse. But now she has withdrawn her guilty plea and her fate will be in the hands of a jury.
The trial for Sharon Twocrows is set for September.
Fatherof3.. Can you tell us how the kids are doing now? Are they with you?

Oct 8, 2008 at 10:00 am -Spanking them…spanking is not okay. Striking other human beings is not okay. Do it to an adult, you go to jail. And yet people think they own their defenseless children and hitting them is just fine. So ignorant.
Fatherof3, who is caring for these children now? Are they okay?

Nov 3, 2008 at 2:05 pm -Funny thing about all of this is, the Kubies never lost custody of their children. They moved to Joplin and Paul, Chasity and the girls still live together as a family. Now, however, Chasity is in jail so that leaves just the girls and Paul. What is this system comming to? They let those babies go back to those monsters. This is what needs to stop!!
