Danielle Bowen Takes Baby Steps

February 1, 2008 by Morbid

Update: 4/16/09–Danielle Bowen pleaded guilty to homicide by child abuse on Wednesday. Though she could have spent life in prison, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison, suspended to 20 years and 5 years probation. Enjoy your stay, Danielle.

Danielle Bowen

Danielle Bowen

This one almost slipped by, but her hearing was today and I am curious as to what kind of sentence she will get.

ANDERSON, S.C. – Danielle Bowen, 18, is in jail for murdering her 6-month-old daughter, Hailey Marie Wilson. She allegedly choked the baby, hit the baby and then stepped on her. The infant went into cardiac arrest and help was not called for the girl until hours after the injuries were inflicted. She states that she accidentally stepped on the child while chasing after her 18-month-old son. Investigators did not find the injuries the girl suffered matched Bowen’s story.

She is now facing life in prison if convicted of her charge of homicide by child abuse. Of course, her family say she was not the type of person to do this, and that she must have been suffering from postpartum depression. She has a Myspace page, now set to private , and like most of the people we feature on this site, she seems happy enough about her pregnancy.

Be sure to watch the videos. It is chock full of everything you’d expect from Anderson, SC. Trailers, barking dogs, wooden street signs, toothless relatives and a neighbor who says something on camera, but I think he was still chewing on some beef jerky while doing it. If anybody has any negative, pre-conceived images of South Carolina…well…yeah, watch the video.

There really should be some kind of Parental Aptitude Test given to high school students. It should involve the student not sleeping for two days and a doll that won’t stop crying. If the student pitches the doll, shakes the dill, hits the doll, puts suffocating pressure on the doll, or steps on the doll, the student gets a free ride to a clinic for contraceptive implants or a little reversible surgery.

No kidding, Imp…2 kids and 18 years old? No doubt she was overwhelmed, but that’s no excuse. As we have all talked about numerous times, there are so many options out there without hurting the kids.

My local high school has such a program. I don’t know if monitors abusive violence, but they can tell if the baby was fed and such stuff. I think it sobers a lot of kid’s ideas about the fun of having a baby and getting government check$ for having proven fertile. I see these girls and boys with their “babies” in Wal-Mart, etc., and they do not look overjoyed with parenthood.

It’s a good program that probably saves many a babe from a horrific end. People always tell me, “Oh, it’s different when it’s your own.” They look sick and dismayed when I answer, “Not always. Lots of babies seem to get tossed out the window or beaten to death.”

Imp, I need to add that our high school does do the contraceptive implant or reversible surgery option — yet. I think it’s a splendid idea. It’s not as if the earth were in need of more people anyway.

I agree with you Imp. There should be mandatory parental classes when you’re in high school, if these people make it that far. There’s nothing we can do to prevent these tragedies though. Kids and young adults are never going to listen to the older adults who know what’s going on. When boys and girls hit puberty, the shit starts hitting the fan. Who will be the first one pregnant, not be able to handle it, then you know what happens next and becomes the next front page news for all of us to read about and get pissed off. It is what it is. It will happen until the end of time. The world is way too big to babysit everyone. I’m not saying all 16 year olds who get pregnant are going to harm their babies, but a few will. It’s a no-win situation that we have to endure. Now, the child sexual predators, murderers, kidnappers and rapists can all be sent to a remote island in the Pacific or Indian Oceans and left to fend for themselves.

I never get that. Is it truly what people believe? That this baby is flying around heaven with wings and her mother’s footprint on it’s chest? I know that comes off kind of sarcastic, and it is a little…but I am honestly asking. I can understand that for some, it may help to think that this kid is not suffering and playing with the Jesus Christ’s locks of hair as he holds her close…but come on, really?

Does no one think that the whole “Well, she is in a better place” or the “God will punish him\her” type of thinking is EXACTLY why we have so much apathy? I mean, if the kid is ok now, drinking warm milk on a cloud over Arizona, and the killer will get his punishment come Judgement Day…no wonder people do not get absolutely OUTRAGED that this woman curb stomped an infant.

Eh, whatever. Just ranting. But I am curious.

Toddler is 18 months — dead baby was 6 months old.

Do these husbands leap into the hospital bed and screw wifey/gf the instant the first baby has left the clown car?

I don’t know if parenting classes in highschool would be that effective. I passed home ec and I can’t cook or sew for shit. I think young mothers, while prego should have to go through mandatory parenting classes. They should be made to watch child abuse videos that are very explicit. The consequences of abusing a child should be drilled into them. The options of where to take your child if you think you are going to harm them should be given on fridge magnets with addresses and phone numbers listed. Make sure they understand the parental basics and are fully aware if you hurt your child you will go to jail, you may be free of the child, but you no longer will be.

I think it makes people feel better to have faith and believe that when we die, we go to a better place. Especially children.

I think you may have hit a nail squarely on the head here. Believing makes it easier to deal. Isn’t that what religion is really about? The notion of god etc. came about in an entirely different world. A time when someone got sick because it was god’s will, at the time bacteria and infections were unknowns. I could rant on and on and on here, but I think you get my point. As much fun as I have playing one of Satan’s minions here, I don’t believe these places…Heaven & Hell…really exist outside our own minds.

That’s a sad stance, to me. Why anyone needs a Heaven or fear of Hell to take their life and live it to it’s full potential. To be nice to your neighbor, to not be a dick and just attempt leading a life that is beneficial to the human race…well I guess I just don’t get it.

I don’t need a carrot dangled in front of me to motivate me to move forward. I try to be a good person because it is the right thing to do, not because I think I will be rewarded for it…or punished for it if I am not.

But whatever helps you get through the day, I guess.

I agreee Morbid. I do the right thing cause its the right thing to do. Not out of fear of heaven or hell. I don’t believe in heaven or hell in the biblical sense. As humans we have an understanding of right and wrong. If we didn’t why would we try to hide the stuff we are ashamed of.

I hope there is a Heaven and Hell. If not, then what is the point?

Why does there have to be a point?

Is there a point for each slug or crawfish or tick on the planet? I’m not really buying it.

How about treating each other humanely and with tolerance because we can? Because we’re evolved enough to understand what suffering means and make a choice not to inflict it on others, instead of because big-daddy with the flowing white beard will smite us in an afterlife if we don’t behave. I don’t like being treated like a wayward child.

Great joke I saw not long ago….two aliens are talking, and one says that earthlings have developed some advanced, satellite-guided weapons systems. The other alien says, “Oh, so they’re becoming an intelligent species?” “Not really, says the first — they have the weapons pointed at themselves….” :-)

Seriously, we’re all in it together on one not-so-big planet: we either figure it out, or we don’t. But I don’t think anyone out in the cosmos (or heavens) is going to save us from ourselves — either here or in the hereafter.

I don’t think it’s so much a carrot, as it is comforting to know that someone (God) is watching over you, that someone cares, that maybe there is a purpose behind us being here instead of random chance. I’m not the most religious person, but I understand its purpose.

I hope there is a Heaven and Hell. If not, then what is the point?

The point is to try to be an addition to the world, and not a subtraction to its goodness.

I have slowly lost my faith and it makes me sad. It began with those people who think that Jesus finds them good parking spaces — really. Their egocentricity made me begin to wonder what it was reasonable to expect God to be involved in. The book, “When Bad Things Happen to Good People,” kept me going for a while longer in my faith. But I kept thinking there should be a companion volume, “When Good Things Happen to Bad People,” which needs a lot more explaining to me than the idea that God will swat them around a lot when they are dead.

I don’t understand how a stupid song such as, “Who Will Hold Her Hand When She Crosses the Street in Heaven?” could be a hit. Do people really believe that Heaven has dangerous traffic? or that any God would let the fictional five-year-old wander around alone in the streets? It’s all too precious for me.

Oh, by your logic, a store that sales Christmas items with Santa on their logo must believe in Santa? :)

And this isn’t fighting. This is discussing. I asked the question, remember? But while I do respect the right for people to believe in whatever they want, I do not necessarily respect the belief. No big deal. I was just curious as to how other people felt. If you consider this fighting, then don’t ever go in the forums on a religious topic…you would consider that mass murder. :)

And I gave two smiley faces in that post to ensure people, I am not arguing, I was, and still am, curious.

i’m spiritual but i don’t specifically believe in heaven and hell in the classical sense. i don’t believe the baby became an angel or that christ died for “our sins”. i respect other folks feelings on that subject but i have come to believe differently.

“god” isnt merciful or loving from anything i’ve ever seen. jesus is dead, there is no saving he can do. he doesnt care – he can’t care. he can only help you as much as you want to help yourself. the hope angle is real and it helps many to believe in god/christ/heaven etc.. i wouldnt take that from the people that are comforted by it. i , personally, do not follow that line of belief.

those that die/pass behind the veil-whatever one may call it, die because their physical/biological form could no longer sustain life. i do not believe a higher power calls the person “home’. i do believe the spiritual energy each person carries within themselves, binds and ties together with the earth and the animals in it.

tis a hard subject for many/most. i would not hope to discourage/disparage anyone elses personal beliefs. but the subject was rung up..

when humans came together to form societies, it was decided and agreed that killing other people was wrong (except for the footnote; wars etc) society agreed that all people within the society would follow the laws set down. punishments were set in place for those not adhering to the laws. human society believes they should be above the killing of others=except we see daily that it is very much in human nature to take life. even in the form of taking a life for the taking of a life. so-you see the contraindications of society and humans is wrought with unequated answers. therein lies the rub-doesnt it.

we strive to be something we are biologically engineered not to be or vise versa.

tis all a lab experiment gone a awry-

please do not take umbrage with my point of view-it is only my opinion-

I wrote a real kick-butt post, and it got eaten. Not by the site, but by my fingers hitting the wrong keys. God or Satan at work? You decide.

At any rate, I was urging people to read “When Bad Things Happen to Good People.” The author is a rabbi and his son died of a terrible illness. People came to him and said it was because of his sin or part of a huge plan. He began to analyze all the comments and decided that there is a God, but he is not omnipotent. There are things in the world beyond his control. This caused quite an uproar and it still makes a very interesting set of thoughts to consider.

Religion is a touchy subject! Faith helps people get through the tough times. I have noticed alot of mentally ill people become religious fanatics (just an observation). I personally need proof of heaven and hell or purgatory or whatever. Morals are what we are really talking about not commandments, A person with an ounce of humanity and sanity knows the difference between right and wrong. It doesn’t matter what religion you follow or if your religion promises heaven, hell, reincarnation or whatever, we all know that murder, rape, etc are wrong. I support people in whatever they choose to believe, if it keeps you going that’s great. I do have a hard time swallowing “god has a purpose” when small children are victims of cruel abuse, fatal diseases, and die young. I would love to hear the factual explanation for this!!

I have some strong opinions about religion especially roman catholic. I choose not to argue my reasons as I find some followers of this religion are brain washed that their religion is the only way (I said some). If you choose any other path you are wrong and you are a sinner! I have my beliefs I do not cram them down peoples throats or go door to door with pamphlets. I believe in choosing what feels right for you as an individual.

We all have our own opinions and beliefs.

Thankfully! If we could all learn to respect each others opinions it would be all good;)

Great, now we’re all fighting. We all have our own opinions and beliefs.

I wouldn’t call it fighting. I think we’re perfectly capable of having our own opinions and beliefs even if they’re different. I believe that there certainly are good and evil people on our planet. It’s interesting that when good things happen, many people are quick to jump to the conclusion that it’s part of some higher power’s plan, and many others will agree with them. But, when a person does something that is truly “evil”, is caught and brought to trial, not a jury in the world would aquit based on a “the devil made me do it” defense. We all make conscious choices in our actions and our actions are what we should be judged by, not our beliefs.

I have always believed that it is all pre-determined and your karmic destiny is already all mapped out. Even for babies. It is horrible to imagine a child in pain or in fear and seeing humans who can inflict that on a child makes it difficult to see the good in the world. I have come to realize that my ability to change these things is very limited. I feel that I would say something or call somebody if I witnessed man’s inhumanity to man but, ultimately, I can only accept responsibility for my own walk in this world.

I know that even if you are snuffed out like a candle flame at the end of your life and there is no heaven or hell, it is still better in many ways than what many experience here on earth. Me? I am determined to have the best experience that I can while I am here and I know that in order to achieve that I need to put out there what I want to get back. Anything else would be cheating.

My mama taught me that ladies never discuss religion or politics in a public forum. But i guess many of you know that as ladylike behavior goes, this imp is, um.. not always so ladylike :)

My name isn’t Imp Queen because I believe in tiny demons who bite you in your sleep. My name is Imp Queen because a long long time ago in a castle in Russia, someone called a baby girl a “shvibzik” (”imp” in Russian) and a few years later Anastasia Romanov got her jeweled corset shot off. And also because i’m cute like that.

I consider myself a spiritual person, and a Christian by faith if not always by observation. In that, Morbid and WWSD and I differ somewhat. Beyond that? Who knows. I don’t *know* there’s a heaven, but I choose to believe that there is. It doesn’t make me feel better when a child is killed, and it doesn’t make me glad they’re in a better place, if such place does exist. Instead, it makes me angry. It makes me want to shine a light on the things we humans do in the darkness so that no child is ever hurt or unwanted or raped or killed.

But evil does exist. We see it all the time. If a demon was dreamin’, Morbid said to me recently, its good dreams would be our nightmares – hence the logo. Evil is evil, no matter what name it goes by. Our job is to stand up for what we know is right, regardless of belief system. If you hurt a child and we can find your picture, you will be here, and people will come and laugh at you. That is what DD’s front page is about.

The forums are for movies, fun, drunken revelry and sex, though. So, y’know, something for everyone. :)

I agree. I have done a little soul searching myself. People as individuals must make that search and decide for themselves.
Too bad many just follow blindly.
I am gonna be corny- quoting the Beatles here: “all you need is love”
Guess what? You don’t have to BE a buddhist to live like buddhist.

I say this broad deserves hell:)

It is hard to fathom that someone can treat a precious child in such a horrific way. I get pissed too. You sound like a wonderful mom. I share your disgust, kill these sickos asap!

Thank you. My son is 11 now, and I also have a 6 yr old. I’ve always done the best I can. I’m certainly not a perfect mother (who is?), but my boys are my life. No matter how mad or stressed I get sometimes, I could never hurt them.

Good! You are now like me, and exactly why the site is designed the way it is. Wake up, get mad, do something about it…ANYTHING. But don’t read these stories, drink your coffee shake your head with disgust and go on to the next. Post about it, be disgusted, be vocal! Talk to your reps, write letters for stiffer penalties, volunteer to help victims, whatever.

Exactly. I actually used to author a blog that was part of the earlier ‘true crime blogroll’. Sadly, I had to stop writing it, as it was getting to be too hard on my heart. But, I’ve never stopped trying to help in any way I can. I’ve been a part of several things, one of which was helping to get additional sex offender laws passed in the suburb I used to live in.
You’re so right, Morbid. Sitting and doing nothing isn’t going to make these things go away. People need to find their voice- and use it!

I have to go cast a spell to become invisible now so I can cram wrenches up the baby rapers asses, I’ll be back with details!

Be sure and use Craftsman wrenches… Sears will replace them free-of-charge, for any reason, no questions asked.

As far as religion goes… I generally keep my views to myself, as I pretty much despise all organized religions as dangerous, bullshit, collectivist, anti-individualist institutions created solely for the purpose of powermongering and the control of the masses. I have nothing personal against the misguided sheep that follow them, docilely bowing their heads to spiritual and mental enslavement… nothing personal, that is, until their ridiculous beliefs and hocus-pocus intrude on my life and interfere with my freedom, which (sad to say) seems to happen a lot in the southeastern US. Then I can get quite rude and insulting.

    Whoops! :)

Get outta my private life big brother. I don’t need the government to legislate my life. I can fuck up just fine all by myself.

I believe the only hell we have to worry about is what we’re living right here, right now on Earth. Don’t believe me? Look at any one of these articles posted on here. Rape, torture, beating, mutilating, murder….sounds like hell to me.

Remember in the movie “The Mummy” and that one dude who was trying to steal and run, came in contact with the mummy… So he started praying in the language of one religion, then another, and another, and another, till he got the right one for the situation…. ;)

If mommy ‘asks and is forgiven’ of her sins before she dies, do you think she will be given pretty little wings so she can fly around in Heaven with the baby she brutally murdered? Ooooh, maybe she will die by someone stomping the fuck out of her too so they can talk about what it felt like! How sweeeeeeeeeeeet………………………………………………….

Today, this guy was going on and on about Native American religion and how much he gets out of the 4-hour sweat lodge prayer. Then he says, “Women aren’t allowed in the sweat lodge at all.” And I said, “That’s why I don’t have a religion. There is one of them that doesn’t treat women like trash.”

    And that ended our conversation.

There are two that treat women pretty well: the Shakers and the Neo-pagans. But no chance to practice either where I live (emoticon smiley face here – still haven’t figured that out yet and am embarrassed to ask after making such a big deal about not being able to log in to the forums).

I have to respond to this one…. What tribe was this guy from other than the ‘WANNABE’ tribe? It seems more and more non natives are creating their own form of ‘native religion’…. I am native, live on rez (reservation) and I take part in sweat ceremonies anytime I choose… It is a part of our life… Women and men both must learn to run a sweat, not everyone can go in and do this… Some tribes, men and women go in seperate, some together… It simply depends on the culture… Native people are one yet are many… No tribe has exactly the same traditions and cultures thus one can not lump ‘native’ together as if one thing applies to all…

Different strokes to different tribes but I’m racking my brain to remember a tribe who excludes women… ? Not only do women take part, women hold a very high place in our culture…. There are not just medicine men, there are medicine women…

The guy who said this to you Wrybread, obviously forgot that the earth is referred to as ‘mother earth’…. Women are honored because they become mothers and without mothers there would be no life…. I am proud to be a woman in my culture! He needs to get a life and stop playing indian… If he is indian, that warrior done lost his mind! Aaaaeeeiii!!!! lololol

I have to respond to this one…. What tribe was this guy from other than the ‘WANNABE’ tribe?

Well, he did say to me that his grandmother was Navajo and that made him one-half Indian (we all say Indian around here, including the Indians). The math seemed a little off to me! That’s not all that seemed off to me, if you get my drift …. When he made the women-excluded remark after going on and on about this wonderful religious path he was discovering, it made me furious. Rather like bragging how great the Masons are and then announcing women can’t join.!

Perhaps he was of the “Iron Man John” sweat lodge deal — you know, where men go off in the woods together, beat drums, and reclaim their inner whatever. Can’t remember the name of the man who started that. He’s a poet.

Thanks for clarifying the subject. What tribe are you, if you don’t mind?

I dont give a fuck if she had post partum depression.
I had 2 kids at 18. I had an abusive partner. And the baby had ADD.
    I was’nt exactly happy.
But you don’t beat up your kids, kill your kids, treat your kids like a piece of garbage, if you love your kids. Not unless you’re mentally VERY unwell.
If she did’nt want her she should’ve handed her over.
