Matthew Watkins

This Matthew Watkins is not the same Matthew Watkins who doesn’t like confrontation, below. This guy likes confrontation just fine.

New Bloomfield, MOMatthew Watkins, 28, was working at the New Life Evangelistic Center’s Mid-America Care Center when his lack of medication kicked in. Watkins, who is schizophrenic, was participating in on-the-job training at the homeless shelter when he began attacking residents – first with a knife, then with a chainsaw.

“One of our staff members apparently had a mental breakdown – I guess you could say he went ballistic,” said a shelter employee. “First he was running around poking people – he poked a guy in the neck with, I think, a pencil – then he came after people with a chainsaw.”

Larry Rice, the shelter director, told police that he was unaware that Watkins was schizophrenic. He had been checked for outstanding warrants before being placed in the job training program, but no medical history appears to have been taken, and Watkins was taking no medications to control his disease.

This isn’t the first time Rice has had problems due to screening the shelter residents he places into authority. Last year in a Springfield shelter being illegally used for overnight stays, a woman was raped by a resident. Right now the New Bloomfield shelter is housing two men who are on the Missouri Sex Offender Registry. Rice told authorities that an employee’s mental problems would not keep him from working at the shelter, but that “he’d get counseling.”

“Everything happened so fast, and the only thing we were trying to do was save our friends,” said Watkins’ supervisor James Chapman. “That was the only thing that was on my mind was trying to save my friends.”

“Within a matter of seconds he was up on me and he took the chainsaw and jabbed it into my mid-section with the grace of God. I guess with a bit of quick movement I went back,” said worker Harvey Getty.

Both Chapman and Getty received minor wounds. Workers Bruce Caulkins and Maurice Thomas, who was training to be a disc jockey at a local radio station, remain critical. Thomas’ throat was slit with a knife. Watkins was arrested at gunpoint and is being held in the Callaway County Jail on $600,000 bond.

He must have remembered his mom telling him when he was a little boy, “don’t run with scissors”. She should have also told him, “don’t run with a chainsaw”.

What a nightmare. You’re training for a job and suddenly you’re in a chainsaw massacre movie.

WTF? Sounds like Harvey’s off his meds too.

They kind of all are, I’m betting. The “on the job training” means “working for free at the homeless shelter where they live”. Larry Rice, the shelter director, is a real piece of work.

And i dunno why he needed a chainsaw when he could have just cut people with that awesome jaw.

Rev. Larry Rice also noted that the chain saw Watkins used to attack New Life employees Bruce Caulkins and Harvey Gaddy was at the back door rather than in the workroom as originally thought.

He said Watkins’ mother has contacted him since the incident and told him Watkins has problems with authority. He also noted that racial slurs directed at some of his victims and the carving of the initials KKK on a car hood indicated another motivating factor.

“This man was lashing out at authority figures, and at African Americans,” Rice said. “He’s just a very troubled person.”

Watkins’ supervisor, James Chapman, whom he attacked with a knife, said that Watkins said ‘Die n- – - -r,’ as he charged at him.

Thanks! Sadly, smart-ass one-liners are about all I have to offer the Demon, with an occasional bit of self-righteous indignation and a bit of vileness here and there… but my supply of smart-ass seems to be limitless. :)

Sad? No need for that. Smart-ass comments, vileness and self-righteous indignation are what we thrive on. We are comfortable atop our high horses and have no problems providing everyone with the stones to throw from all of our glass houses. :)

It’s public shaming. And if there was anything you wanna quote me on, it is this. Ain’t nothing wrong with a good, old-fashioned shaming.

No offense to anyone, but why do all these crazy homicides/rapes seem to happen in middle-america places like Iowa, Colorado, Pennsylvania? Maybe I’m just imaging it, and I’m too lazy to go back to research it. Just talking off the top of my head, as usual

Try living in Mid-America for awhile and see if it don’t piss you off.

This man is also wearing the Fred Flinstone costume for his mugshot. Maybe it’s a bulletproof vest, or something they make perps wear when they fear they have a razor up their sleeve or something.

Or maybe it is a Fred Flinstone vest.

As a nurse, I do deal with mentally unstable patients. There are quite a few nurses on this site also that deal with these type of patients. We know that this is an illness and can’t be controlled at all times, usually when the patient stops taking medication because they can’t buy it to take or just think that the medicine is causing more problems for them. Sometimes if it weren’t for the people on here that make a comment that is funny, we would go crazy ourselves just reading all the bad things that happen.

I can understand why it bothers you. I have a cousin who is schizophrenic and manic depressant. I have gone to visit him only to find him in his bedroom with tin foil wrapped around his head so that the government can’t read his mind and setting there having a conversation with four voices he hears. Oh, I understand completely what your family goes through.
