First, I would bet buckets there are drugs and/or alcohol involved here. I am having a hard time imagining what 2 months of systematic torture must feel like to a 4 year old. She was 4 already and nothing had been done. The were probably painful. That’s sad.

I have to reply to this one
I know Mark and his family, and I have to say why think that his mother is partially responsible for what HE did. Marks life as a child was not that great, BUT when his mother found out what was going on with the kids and the father, she had him arrested and she left him. So tell me that is a bad mother. She is a wonderful mother, it is just too bad Mark got his attitude from his father, which by the way his father killed himself.

Mark Alton Friend should spend the rest of his life in prison without parole for beating to death his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Fourth Judicial District Judge Robert L. Lowery imposed the mandatory sentence on Friend, 27, who stood impassive in an orange jail jumpsuit with his hands cuffed behind his back.

On Aug. 26, a jury convicted Friend of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in the January 2008 death of Madyson Bogard. The child’s mother, Chrystie Marie Hardy, is awaiting trial.

Lowery also imposed maximum sentences of 48 years for child abuse resulting in death and 32 years for child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. Those will run concurrent to Friend’s life sentence.

Before the sentence, Deputy District Attorney Brien Cecil read a letter from Bogard’s paternal grandmother Laura Lines.

Lines remembered her granddaughter as a beautiful child who loved “ravioli, pancakes and string cheese,” was fond of pink and purple and who sang in the shower.

Lines recalled arriving at the hospital just after her son had given doctors permission to remove his daughter from life support.

“I sang Twinkle Twinkle to her for the last time. I ran my fingers through her hair. I held her little hands in mine and begged her to come back to us,” she wrote.

Lines asked Lowery to impose the maximum sentence on Friend.

“I have never hated before, but the hate in my heart for this man will be there forever,” she wrote.

January 12,2010 (almost two years later) Chrystie Marie Hardy pleaded guilty to the charge of child abuse resulting in death, she will face a prison sentence of between 30 to 40 years when Judge Lowrey sentences her April 22. The normal sentencing range for child abuse resulting in death is 16 to 48 years in prison. I'll be watching and praying Hardy receives the MAX.
